Cytokeratin expression is being frequently used for the differential diagnosis of carcinomas originating from different sites. Among the various cytokeratins, the combination of cytokeratins (CKs) 7 and 20 is considered to be the most useful for this purpose. Cervical inlet patch (CIP) is defined by the presence of gastric mucosa within the first few centimeters of the esophagus. Several endoscopic series have demonstrated a frequent association of CIP with Barrett's esophagus (BE) suggesting a pathogenetic link. Gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma arising in mature cystic teratomas of the ovary is extremely rare. We report a case of well-differentiated intestinal adenocarcinoma arising in a mature cystic teratoma of the ovary in a 77-year-old woman, presenting as acute abdomen with ovarian torsion. An immunohistochemical study revealed expression of CK20 and CK7, and the tumor was also positive for MUC2. The patient had no evidence of disease after 12 months of follow-up.

A 21-year-old man presented with hypertrophic nail dystrophy and subungual debris of all 20 nails, hyperkeratotic plaques on the heels of both feet, and oral leukokeratosis. BACKGROUND: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), an aggressive malignancy that has been increasing in incidence, rarely presents with an epidermotropic pattern.
OBJECTIVE: We conducted an immunohistochemical evaluation of 6 previously unpublished cases of epidermotropic MCC, focusing particularly on the staining characteristics of epithelial membrane antigen and cytokeratin-20 in the hope of providing insight into the mechanism of epidermotropism in MCC.

OBJECTIVE: The strong familial basis of vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) is well recognised, however little progress has been made in identifying the causative genes. In this study we have investigated whether human vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) is associated with the aberrant expression of urothelial differentiation-associated antigens in view of the VUR phenotype of the Uroplakin IIIa (UPIIIa) "knockout" mouse.
METHODS: Samples of urothelium were collected from 13 children with primary VUR, four children with secondary VUR and from seven children with non-refluxing disorders of the urinary tract.
