BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the phenotypic pattern of oral squamous epithelium is important in the histopathologic evaluation of lesions including cancer. The cells lining the posterior surface of a corneal button obtained from a patient with Chandler's syndrome were examined by transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and by keratin staining. The ultrastructural appearance with intracytoplasmic 8 nm filaments, desmosomes, microvillous projections, and positive keratin staining suggests that these may be epithelial cells. Clinical specular microscopy of this cornea prior to transplantation revealed characteristic changes that were seen to be related to the density of microvillous projections on the cell membrane.

Using immunocytochemistry and a panel of monoclonal antibodies directed against various keratin polypeptides we examined specimens of normal periodontal ligament, periapical granulomas and inflammatory dental cysts. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic investigations were carried out on solubilized proteins from psoriatic and normal stratum corneum obtained by adhesive tape stripping. The proteins in the scales adhering to the tape were solubilized by incubating the tape in 1% sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) solution. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), one of the major stress-induced proinflammatory cytokines, is upregulated in the heart after tissue injury, and its sustained expression can contribute to the development of heart failure. BACKGROUND: Alterations of the hepatocytic intermediate filament (IF) cytoskeleton, i.e., derangement and diminution of the keratin network and appearance of cytoplasmic aggregates of keratin-containing material, termed Mallory bodies, are characteristic features of human alcoholic hepatitis. Mallory bodies can be experimentally produced in mouse liver by chronic griseofulvin (GF) administration. The immunophenotypes of 74 malignant lymphomas (9 Hodgkin's disease, 19 low-grade B-cell, 20 high-grade B-cell, 8 T-cell, and 18 large cell anaplastic lymphomas [LCAL]) have been characterized with antibodies against leucocyte differentiation antigens, keratin, and vimentin.
