CME Sonography 99: Kidney Echo Changes Abstract. Normal kidneys have a smooth contour, kidney length 9-12 cm, volume 90-180 ml/1.73 m2 body surface, parenchyma width 13-18 mm and an echogenicity of the cortex which is hypoechoic compared to the liver and spleen, as well as medullary pyramids, which are again hypoechoic compared to the cortex. Digital ultrasound images enable the echogenicity to be measured between 0 (black) and 255 (white). A normal quotient between the echogenicity of the liver and the renal cortex is 1.0-1.4. A normal quotient between the spleen and the renal cortex is >1.0.

Ca2+-binding protein regucalcin is expressed in the kidney cortex of rats, as assayed by Northern blot analysis. The existence of kidney nuclear factor which binds to the 5'-flanking region of the rat regucalcin gene was investigated. Rat Kidney is reported to contain the rK7-kallikrein gene expressed at a high mRNA level. However, there is no direct evidence that the rK7 enzyme is present in kidney or urine. We have analyzed rat kidney and urine for rK7-like enzyme activity, using distinctive properties of purified rK7 enzyme (hydrolysis of specific substrate, inhibition by SBTI). The left kidneys from twenty males, aged 30 to 59, were examined. On an average, the cortex, medulla, and the remainder (renal pelvis and adjacent fatty tissue) constituted 65, 27, and 8 percent of the whole kidney weight, respectively. The mean cadmium concentrations were 18.4, 6.9, and 3.2 micrograms Cd/g wet wt, respectively. The mean whole kidney cadmium concentration was 14.4 micrograms Cd/g wet wt. The kidney cortex concentration of cadmium can be approximated by multiplying the whole kidney concentration by a factor of 1.25, which is somewhat lower than the factor of 1.5 previously used

INTRODUCTION: Reduced kidney size has been proposed as a criterion for clinical diagnosis of Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN). Kidney macrophages are comprised of both monocyte-derived and tissue resident populations; however, the heterogeneity of kidney macrophages and factors that regulate their heterogeneity are poorly understood. Herein, we performed single cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq), fate mapping, and parabiosis to define the cellular heterogeneity of kidney macrophages in healthy mice. Our data indicate that healthy mouse kidneys contain four major subsets of monocytes and two major subsets of kidney resident macrophages (KRM) including a population with enriched Ccr2 expression, suggesting monocyte origin.
