Combined neurogenic pulmonary oedema and atypical Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in a patient with ischaemic stroke: a unique case report.

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic pulmonary oedema (NPO) and Takotsubo cardiomyopathy are rare complications of ischaemic stroke. They are considered to be due to an excess catecholamine release after sympathetic nervous stimulation following stroke onset. Among the different types of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, apical ballooning is recognized as the typical form, but three atypical patterns have been described (midventricular, basal, and focal) which are more commonly observed in patients with neurological disorders. CASE SUMMARY: A 78-year-old woman was treated with intravenous alteplase and underwent m

Positional cloning of the Chediak-Higashi syndrome gene: genetic mapping of the beige locus on mouse chromosome 13.

BACKGROUND: Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) is a systemic disorder of human and mouse (beige, bg) that is characterized by aberrant intracellular protein kinesis and lysosomal trafficking. Affected individuals exhibit a severe primary immune deficiency that principally affects the function of granulocytes and cytolytic lymphocytes and partial oculocutaneous albinism, platelet dysfunction, and neurodegeneration. Chediak-Higashi syndrome is inherited as an autosomal recessive Mendelian trait in human and mouse and maps on proximal mouse Chromosome 13. METHODS: To clone positionally the defective

Cardiac contractility modulation by electric currents applied during the refractory period in patients with heart failure secondary to ischemic or idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy.

We assessed the feasibility of cardiac contractility modulation (CCM) by electric currents applied during the refractory period in patients with heart failure (HF). Extracellular electric currents modulating action potential and calcium transients have been shown to potentiate myocardial contractility in vitro and in animal models of chronic HF. CCM signals were biphasic square-wave pulses with adjustable amplitude, duration, and time delay from sensing of local electric activity. Signals were applied to the left ventricle through an epicardial vein (in 12 patients) or to the right ventricular

Porcine partial liver transplantation without veno-venous bypass: an effective model for small-for-size liver graft injury.

OBJECTIVE: Partial liver transplantation is currently gaining wider acceptance, which alleviates donor organ shortage, but also reveals the problem of small-for-size (SFS) syndrome. The precise mechanism behind it remains unknown. Large animal models for SFS syndrome are being developed using veno-venous bypass (VVB), however, splenectomies have often become necessary making the models useless for clinical situations. This study establishes a clinically well-simulated and effective model of SFS graft injury without VVB. METHODS: In this study, 30% and 100% of liver grafts were orthotopically

The effect of lateral banking on the kinematics and kinetics of the lower extremity during lateral cutting movements.

There are many aspects of cutting movements that can limit performance, however, the implementation of lateral banking may reduce some of these limitations. Banking could provide a protective mechanism, placing the foot and ankle in orientations that keep them out of dangerous positions. This study sought to determine the effect of two banking angles on the kinematics and kinetics of the lower extremity during two athletic maneuvers. Kinematic and kinetic data were collected on 10 recreational athletes performing v-cuts and side shuffle movements on different banked surfaces (0°, 10°, 20°). Ea

The Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia for Temporomandibular Disorders (TSK-TMD).

For musculoskeletal disorders like low back pain and fibromyalgia, evidence is growing for fear of movement to play an important role in the development of chronic pain. In temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients, however, this construct has not received any attention yet. Therefore, in this paper, (1) a generally used instrument to measure fear of movement, the Dutch version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK), was adapted for its use in TMD patients (and translated for equivalence to English), (2) the psychometric properties of the Dutch version of the TSK-TMD were assessed, and (3)

Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Norwegian version of the Tampa scale for kinesiophobia.

STUDY DESIGN: Translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation of a self-report questionnaire. OBJECTIVE: To perform a translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Tampa scale for kinesiophobia (TSK) and to investigate its test-retest reliability, construct validity, and responsiveness among Norwegian-speaking patients with sciatica due to disc herniation. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The TSK is a self-report questionnaire developed to assess kinesiophobia, or fear of movement and/or (re)injury. To date, the psychometric properties of the TSK have not been demonstrated in patients w

Electrokinesiologic measurement of trunk sagittal mobility and lumbar erector spinae muscle activity.

Additional studies to determine intratester reliability of electrokinesiologic (EK) measures related to trunk movement and low back muscle activity are needed. EMG activity and EK records of repetitive movements at both natural and maximal speeds were computer sampled and quantified among 22 nonimpaired subjects. Significant differences were observed between group means at different speeds and trials for both kinematic and EMG measures. Predictably, maximal speed testing resulted in higher levels of EMG activity when compared to natural speed testing. Intratester reliability of measures was hi

Morphological and functional diversity of the mandible in suckermouth armored catfishes (Siluriformes: Loricariidae).

We examined the mandibles of 377 individuals representing 25 species, 12 genera, 5 tribes, and 2 subfamilies of the Loricariidae, a species-rich radiation of detritivorous-herbivorous neotropical freshwater fishes distinguished by having a ventral oral disk and jaws specialized for surface attachment and benthic feeding. Loricariid mandibles are transversely oriented and bilaterally independent, each rotating predominantly around its long axis, although rotational axes likely vary with mandibular geometry. On each mandible, we measured three traditional and three novel morphological parameters

Detection of schistosome cercariae in water: A systematic review of traps and attractants.

Environmental surveillance of schistosome cercariae concentrations in water bodies constitutes an important complementary indicator to human schistosomiasis infection data. Schistosoma cercariae traps can be one means of environmental surveillance. To advance these cercariae trap technologies, it is first necessary to synthesise the existing evidence on schistosome cercariae attractants and traps. Six databases were last searched in April 2025. Studies were screened to include primary research on schistosome cercariae traps and attractants with quantitative outcomes, excluding studies assessin

A functional-anatomical approach to the spine-pelvis mechanism: interaction between the biceps femoris muscle and the sacrotuberous ligament.

Summary. Sacroiliac joint dysfunction is often overlooked as a possible cause of low back pain. This is due to the use of reductionistic anatomical models. From a kinematic point of view, topographic anatomical models are generally inadequate since they categorize pelvis, lower vertebral column and legs as distinct entities. This functional-anatomical study focuses on the question whether anatomical connections between the biceps femoris muscle and the sacrotuberous ligament are kinematically useful. Forces applied to the tendon of the biceps femoris muscle, simulating biceps femoris muscle fo

Hybrid FES-robot cooperative control of ambulatory gait rehabilitation exoskeleton.

Robotic and functional electrical stimulation (FES) approaches are used for rehabilitation of walking impairment of spinal cord injured individuals. Although devices are commercially available, there are still issues that remain to be solved. Control of hybrid exoskeletons aims at blending robotic exoskeletons and electrical stimulation to overcome the drawbacks of each approach while preserving their advantages. Hybrid actuation and control have a considerable potential for walking rehabilitation but there is a need of novel control strategies of hybrid systems that adequately manage the bala

Outcome factors of idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy in children - a long-term follow-up review.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy in children has a high rate of mortality. Cardiac transplantation is the treatment of choice in those who fail to respond to therapeutics. Several studies have been carried out to determine unfavourable prognoses, and to provide an early indication for cardiac transplantation. Nevertheless, no consensus has been reached on the matter. OBJECTIVE: To propose predictors of death in children with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. METHODS: We reviewed data extending over 22 years from 142 consecutive children with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, o

Acute intrathecal administration of quipazine elicits air-stepping behavior.

Serotonin plays a pivotal role in the initiation and modulation of locomotor behavior in the intact animal, as well as following spinal cord injury. Quipazine, a serotonin 2 receptor agonist, has been used successfully to initiate and restore motor behavior in rodents. Although evidence suggests that the effects of quipazine are spinally mediated, it is unclear whether intrathecal (IT) quipazine administration alone is enough to activate locomotor-like activity or whether additional stimulation is needed. Thus, the current study examined the effects of IT administration of quipazine in postnat

Review of first trial responses in balance control: influence of vestibular loss and Parkinson's disease.

The reaction to an unexpected balance disturbance is unpracticed, often startling and frequently associated with falls. This everyday situation can be reproduced in an experimental setting by exposing standing humans to sudden, unexpected and controlled movements of a support surface. In this review, we focus on the responses to the very first balance perturbation, the so-called first trial reactions (FTRs). Detailed analysis of FTRs may have important implications, both for clinical practice (providing new insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying accidental falls in real lif

Behavioral changes associated with grafts of embryonic ventral mesencephalon tissue into the striatum and/or substantia nigra in a rat model of Parkinson's Disease.

Unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine lesion of the ascending nigrostriatal pathway in rats is a commonly used model of Parkinson's Disease. Transplantation of embryonic ventral mesencephalon (VM) into the striatum of such rats reduces drug-induced turning and ameliorates some simple behavioral deficits. While considerably less research has been conducted on the topic, VM grafts into the lesioned substantia nigra (SN) may induce recovery on more complex and/or spontaneous tasks. The present series of experiments was conducted to explicitly compare the behavioral efficacy of intrastriatal and intranigra

Orbicular synkinesis after facial paralysis: treatment with botulinum toxin.

Involuntary lid closure not rarely accompanies aberrant regeneration of nerve fibers after different types of facial paralysis. 23 patients with such synkinesis were treated with botulinum toxin injections into the orbicularis oculi muscle. After periocular injections all patients showed much improvement: a period of, on the average, 13 symptom-free weeks was followed by a period of minimal symptoms. There were only minor complications. Whenever repeated treatment is necessary, botulinum toxin proves to be an effective therapy for involuntary lid closure after defective healing following facia
