Our goal was to determine whether the vestibular response to vertical, z-axis body rotation in the dark is influenced by the magnitude of gravitoinertial force. We measured the nystagmus and the duration of illusory self-motion elicited in blindfolded subjects by cessation of such rotation during the free-fall, high, and terrestrial force phases of parabolic flight maneuvers. Both measures were significantly lower in zero G than in 1 G, and lower to a smaller extent in 1.8 G. The decreased intensity of nystagmus was due specifically to a decrease in the time constant of slow phase velocity dec

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of tactile and kinesthetic stimulation on behavioral and clinical development in preterm neonates while still in the hospital.
METHODS: Thirty-two clinically stable preterm infants weighing <2.500 grams, with no significant perinatal asphyxia, were allocated to two groups: a control group (CG) in which no intervention was made (n=16) and a study group (SG) in which the newborn infants received tactile and kinesthetic stimulation (n=16). Data on the infants' clinical progress were collected from medical charts and behavioral evaluations by means of a series of

The force seated humans exert on a translationally fixed pedal (foot force) may be directed at any angle because the fixed distance between the seat and the pedal axis kinematically constrains the lower limb. The authors' objective in the present work was to characterize such force. Participants (N = 7) generated force with their lower limb by pushing against the pedal in the most comfortable manner. Pushing efforts were repeated randomly 3 times at each of 97 sagittal-plane pedal axis positions and 10 additional times in 9 of those positions (2,895 total pushes). In 87% of the pushes, the mea

The extent to which the cerebral hemispheres and their ipsilateral projection systems compensate for congenital absence of the corpus callosum was studied in an intelligent young adult with radiologically verified total agenesis. She was found to have bilateral speech and the ability to readily integrate visual, tactile, and verbal information simultaneously presented to both hemispheres. However, spatial performance, as demonstrated in blind tactile form board learning, was subnormal compared to normal controls. The results further suggest this impairment, especially severe in the nondominant

We investigated the enhancement of the perceived force strength in force feedback devices by combining the pulling illusion with kinesthetic illusions. The pulling illusion (i.e., a sensation of being pulled or pushed) is induced by asymmetric vibrations applied to the fingertips, enabling the implementation of small, lightweight, and ungrounded force feedback devices. However, the perceived force intensity is limited. We focused on the kinesthetic illusion, a phenomenon in which the movement of a limb in the direction of muscle extension is illusively perceived by presenting vibrations to ten

Successful interaction with the environment requires the dissociation of self-induced from externally induced sensory stimulation. Temporal proximity of action and effect is hereby often used as an indicator of whether an observed event should be interpreted as a result of own actions or not. We tested how the delay between an action (press of a touch bar) and an effect (onset of simulated self-motion) influences the processing of visually simulated self-motion in the ventral intraparietal area (VIP) of macaque monkeys. We found that a delay between the action and the start of the self-motion

The aim was to determine if patients with writer' cramp (WC) have abnormalities in kinesthetic motor imagery of hand movements. We timed the execution and simulation of a 'finger tap task' and a 'writing task' in 9 patients with simple WC and 9 matched healthy controls. In the 'finger tap task, patients tended to be slower than controls to execute without vision (p=0.190) and to simulate the movements (p=0.094). In the 'writing task', patients were slower than controls to execute writing with vision (p=0.0001) and without vision of the movements (p=0.0001) and to mentally simulate it (p=0.04).

Parkinson's disease (PD) and focal dystonia (FD) are both predominantly characterized by motor symptoms. Also, recent research has shown that sensory processing is impaired in both movement disorders. FD is characterized by involuntary movements and abnormal limb postures; thus, abnormal kinesthesia could be involved in the pathogenesis. We examined passive index finger movements in patients with FD (n = 12) and PD (n = 11) and in age-matched healthy controls (n = 13). Compared to healthy controls, patients with PD and FD were significantly impaired in the correct detection of the movement dir

We studied the ability of patients with cerebellar degeneration to perceive differences in kinaesthetic stimuli and compared it with that of normal subjects. All participants were tested for duration, amplitude and velocity sensation. In separate experiments, the responses of muscle spindle afferents and slowly adapting cutaneous mechanoreceptors to the kinaesthetic stimuli were recorded. The performance of patients with cerebellar degeneration was significantly worse than that of normal subjects on the tasks testing for duration and velocity perception. Although both spindle afferents and slo

This study examines the change in the perceived distance of an object in three-dimensional space when the object and/or the observer's head is moved along the line of sight (sagittal motion) as a function of the perceived absolute (egocentric) distance of the object and the perceived motion of the head. To analyze the processes involved, two situations, labeled A and B, were used in four experiments. In Situation A, the observer was stationary and the perceived motion of the object was measured as the object was moved toward and away from the observer. In Situation B, the same visual informati

Mechanical unloading during head movements in weightlessness may be an etiological factor in space-motion sickness. We simulated altered head loading on Earth without affecting vestibular stimulation by having subjects wear a weighted helmet. Eight subjects were exposed to constant velocity rotation about a vertical axis with direction reversals every 60 sec. for eight reversals with the head loaded and eight with the head unloaded. The severity of motion sickness elicited was significantly higher when the head was loaded. This suggests that altered sensory-motor control of the head is also an

It has previously been shown that when a moving and a stationary display are superimposed, illusory self-rotation (circular vection) is induced only when the moving display appears as the background. Three experiments are reported on the extent to which illusory forward self-motion (forward vection) induced by a looming display is inhibited by a superimposed stationary display as a function of the size and location of the stationary display and of the depth between the stationary and looming displays. Results showed that forward vection was controlled by the display that was perceived as the b

Susceptibility to motion sickness during exposure to constant levels of Coriolis, cross-coupling stimulation is lower in zero G and higher in 1.8 G than in a 1-G force environment (10, 13). The goal of the present experiment was to determine whether gravitoinertial force magnitude also influences oculomotor and perceptual responses to Coriolis, cross-coupling stimulation. We had blind-folded subjects who were rotating at constant velocity make standardized head movements during the free-fall and high force phases of parabolic flight, and we measured both the characteristics of their horizontal

Our laboratory at the Johnson Space Center has employed the H-reflex recorded from the soleus muscle as a method of monosynaptic reflex testing in conjunction with vertical linear acceleration to assess modification of utriculo-saccular function induced through prolonged exposure to microgravity. It was hypothesized that exposure to free fall would reduce the necessity for postural reflexes in the major leg muscles, and that postural modification would reflect a change, not in the peripheral vestibular organs, but more centrally. This postural adjustment would reflect a sensory motor rearrange

Visually induced kinesthetic illusion (V-KI) - the sensation of movement without actual limb motion - has been shown to enhance brain activity related to voluntary movement and to modulate descending volleys at the spinal level. In this study, we sought to determine whether these effects extend to peripheral muscles and whether the magnitude of this response depends on the strength of virtual body embodiment. Twenty-six healthy participants observed videos of their own hand performing wrist movements under conditions that manipulated spatial alignment and included a single tactile-priming sess

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Patients' perception of limb position during regional anaesthesia is frequently incorrect. The incidence and nature of this phenomenon has not yet been completely described. The aim of this prospective study was to assess phantom sensation in patients undergoing a brachial plexus block.
METHODS: Axillary block was performed in 81 patients with the aid of a peripheral nerve stimulator. Immediately after the block, patients were allocated randomly to two groups (Group 1, n = 40; Group 2, n = 41) to have the blocked limb placed either on their thorax or in abduction. Fi

The wallpaper illusion, first described over a century ago, can occur when a person with normal binocular vision views a pattern that is periodic in the horizontal meridian of the visual field. Escalator trends present such a pattern. Evidence is presented favoring the view that disorientation experienced by escalator riders is caused by this illusion. Possibly some of the estimated 60,000 escalator falls occurring in the United States each year are linked to it.
