Diversity of endophytic bacteria with antimicrobial potential isolated from marine macroalgae from Yacila and Cangrejos beaches, Piura-Peru.

Endophytic bacteria found in marine macroalgae have been studied for their potential antimicrobial activity, consequently, they could serve as a valuable source of bioactive compounds to control pathogenic bacteria, yeasts, and fungi. Algae endophytic bacteria were isolated from Caulerpa sp., Ulva sp., Ahnfeltiopsis sp., and Chondracantus chamissoi from Yacila and Cangrejo Beaches (Piura, Peru). Antimicrobial assays against pathogenic bacteria were evaluated using cross-culture, over-plate, and volatile organic compound tests. Afterward, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum b

Prevalence and clonality of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases in Asia.

Asia is almost certainly a part of the world in which extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) have emerged de novo, with some early antimicrobial resistance studies showing high levels of the ESBL phenotype, particularly among Klebsiella, and most notably in China, Korea, Japan and India. There is a lack of genotyping studies but work from the late 1990s suggests that SHV-5 and SHV-12 were most common then, with only very rare reports of TEM-related ESBL genes. As in other parts of the world, quite marked differences have since been seen in the pattern of ESBL genes, particularly in relation

Comprehensive analyses of carbapenem-resistant and ESBL-producing bacteria in fresh vegetables and their resistome in the United States.

Carbapenem-resistant and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria, once largely confined to healthcare settings, are increasingly detected in community environments. Food and the environment may act as important reservoirs for clinically relevant antibiotic-resistant bacteria. A large-scale surveillance study was conducted from 2022 to 2023 to assess antibiotic resistance in retail fresh vegetables across three U.S. regions: the Midsouth, Midwest, and West Coast. A total of 1218 samples representing five vegetable categories (carrots, lettuce, spinach, sprouts/microgreens, an

Virulence and biodegradation potential of dynamic microbial communities associated with decaying Cladophora in Great Lakes.

Cladophora mats that accumulate and decompose along shorelines of the Great Lakes create potential threats to the health of humans and wildlife. The decaying algae create a low oxygen and redox potential environment favoring growth and persistence of anaerobic microbial populations, including Clostridium botulinum, the causal agent of botulism in humans, birds, and other wildlife. In addition to the diverse population of microbes, a dynamic chemical environment is generated, which involves production of numerous organic and inorganic substances, many of which are believed to be toxic to the sa

Genetic and structural insights into the dissemination potential of the extremely broad-spectrum class A beta-lactamase KPC-2 identified in an Escherichia coli strain and an Enterobacter cloacae strain isolated from the same patient in France.

Two clinical strains of Escherichia coli (2138) and Enterobacter cloacae (7506) isolated from the same patient in France and showing resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins and low susceptibility to imipenem were investigated. Both strains harbored the plasmid-contained bla(TEM-1) and bla(KPC-2) genes. bla(KLUC-2), encoding a mutant of the chromosomal beta-lactamase of Kluyvera cryocrescens, was also identified at a plasmid location in E. cloacae 7506, suggesting the ISEcp1-assisted escape of bla(KLUC) from the chromosome. Determination of the KPC-2 structure at 1.6 A revealed that the

Species distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility of gram-negative aerobic bacteria in hospitalized cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Nosocomial infections pose significant threats to hospitalized patients, especially the immunocompromised ones, such as cancer patients. METHODS: This study examined the microbial spectrum of gram-negative bacteria in various infection sites in patients with leukemia and solid tumors. The antimicrobial resistance patterns of the isolated bacteria were studied. RESULTS: The most frequently isolated gram-negative bacteria were Klebsiella pneumonia (31.2%) followed by Escherichia coli (22.2%). We report the isolation and identification of a number of less-frequent gram negative bact

Stepwise phage resistance and collateral phage susceptibility in Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) is a difficult-to-treat pathogen. Phages recovered by a "stepwise" approach may constitute a cocktail able to prolong retardation of bacterial regrowth. We stepwise recovered three lytic phages (namely P04, P40, and P49) from different families against ST11KL64 CRKP and created a cocktail that restrained CRKP growth for 15 h. Phage P04 recognized bacterial capsular polysaccharide (CPS). P04/P40-resistant mutants lost the large fragments containing CPS gene due to homologous recombination between two insertion sequences. Through gene cloning and

Genetic Analysis of mcr-1-Carrying Plasmids From Gram-Negative Bacteria in a Dutch Tertiary Care Hospital: Evidence for Intrapatient and Interspecies Transmission Events.

The role of plasmids in the complex pandemic of antimicrobial resistance is increasingly being recognized. In this respect, multiple mobile colistin resistance (mcr) gene-carrying plasmids have been described. However, the characteristics and epidemiology of these plasmids within local healthcare settings are largely unknown. We retrospectively characterized the genetic composition and epidemiology of plasmids from mcr-1-positive bacterial isolates identified from patients from a large academic hospital in the Netherlands. Clinical Gram-negative bacteria with an MIC > 2 μg/mL for colistin, obt

Characterization of a Novel blaKLUC Variant With Reduced β-Lactam Resistance From an IncA/C Group Plasmid in a Clinical Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolate.

Similar to other CTX-M family enzymes, KLUC is a recently identified and emerging determinant of cefotaxime resistance that has been recovered from at least three Enterobacteriaceae species, including Kluyvera cryocrescens, Escherichia coli, and Enterobacter cloacae. Whether this extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) has been disseminated among commonly isolated Enterobacteriaceae is worthy of further investigation. In this study, we screened 739 nosocomial Enterobacteriaceae isolates (240 Klebsiella pneumoniae and 499 E. coli strains) and found that one K. pneumoniae and four E. coli isolates

Assessment of the Prevalence of Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae in Ready-to-Eat Salads, Fresh-Cut Fruit, and Sprouts from the Swiss Market.

Ready-to-eat (RTE) prepacked salads and fruit have been successfully marketed for the last decade in Switzerland and are increasingly important as a component of everyday diets. To determine whether extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae are present in RTE salads, fresh-cut fruit, and sprouts on the Swiss market, samples of 238 mixed and unmixed RTE produce from a large production plant and 23 sprout samples from two sprout farms were analyzed. Further, four samples from the production plant's recycled wash water, which is used for crop irrigation, were analyzed. Twe

The composition and abundance of bacterial communities residing in the gut of Glossina palpalis palpalis captured in two sites of southern Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: A number of reports have demonstrated the role of insect bacterial flora on their host's physiology and metabolism. The tsetse host and vector of trypanosomes responsible for human sleeping sickness (human African trypanosomiasis, HAT) and nagana in animals (African animal trypanosomiasis, AAT) carry bacteria that influence its diet and immune processes. However, the mechanisms involved in these processes remain poorly documented. This underscores the need for increased research into the bacterial flora composition and structure of tsetse flies. The aim of this study was to identif

Whole-genome sequencing characterization of silver-resistant bacteria from the outfall of wastewater treatment plants and effluent-receiving rivers.

UNLABELLED: The excessive use of silver compounds has led to the environmental dissemination of silver resistance genes. However, little is known about the epidemiology of silver-resistant bacteria in the environment. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) link the clinical settings with the natural environment and serve as a major pathway for silver entering the natural environment. However, their role in the dissemination of silver resistance genes remains unclear. This study investigated the characteristics of silver-resistant bacteria in the vicinity of four WWTPs to assess their environmenta
