Emergency implementation of knowledge management system to support a bioterrorism response.

In a public health emergency, it becomes necessary for public health agencies to provide timely, accurate and useful information to the community. During the anthrax attacks, the Public Health Practice Program Office in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention implemented a knowledge management (KM) system to respond to an increased number of inquiries from public health officials, first responders, and health care professionals as well as the general public. While it is possible to successfully implement a knowledge management system quickly in a crisis situation, additional challenges

Challenges in Pediatric Fluid Management: Insights into Nursing Practices and Knowledge.

BACKGROUND: Fluid overload-a critical risk in pediatric/neonatal care-is often driven by excessive fluid during medication dilution, increasing complications like acute kidney injury(AKI), prolonged ventilation, and mortality. METHODS: A 2024 cross-sectional study across 14 pediatric units (PICUs, NICUs, surgical/general wards) evaluated fluid administration practices and nurses' knowledge. Observations included 150 patients and 200 nurses administering 8 medications. Data on fluid volumes, infusion durations, compatibility, and storage compliance were collected via checklist and questionnair

Pericardial effusion in oncological patients: current knowledge and principles of management.

BACKGROUND: This article provides an up-to-date overview of pericardial effusion in oncological practice and a guidance on its management. Furthermore, it addresses the question of when malignancy should be suspected in case of newly diagnosed pericardial effusion. MAIN BODY: Cancer-related pericardial effusion is commonly the result of localization of lung and breast cancer, melanoma, or lymphoma to the pericardium via direct invasion, lymphatic dissemination, or hematogenous spread. Several cancer therapies may also cause pericardial effusion, most often during or shortly after administrati

Nurses' knowledge to identify, prevent and manage hypertensive disorder of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are major contributors to maternal mortality in South Africa. Preventative strategies in low- and middle-income countries emphasise frequent antenatal visits, symptom identification, patient education and the prophylactic use of calcium and low-dose aspirin to prevent HDP for nurses because they are the frontline workers at antenatal clinics countrywide. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study where a self-administered questionnaire was conducted among nurses (midwives and professional nurses) employed at hospitals and clinics in Durban, South

Healthcare professionals' knowledge and practices in managing ototoxicity in children with cancer.

BACKGROUND: Platinum-based chemotherapy poses a risk of ototoxic hearing loss, the effects of which can be devastating in paediatrics with cancer. Childhood hearing loss significantly impacts speech and language acquisition, and educational, psychosocial and emotional development, consequently negatively impacting quality of life. Adequate knowledge and effective management by healthcare professionals in the team managing paediatrics with cancer are, therefore, pivotal to mitigating the severity and impact on quality of life. OBJECTIVES: To describe the knowledge and practices of healthcare p

INTRODUCTION: Knee injuries largely vary including cartilaginous, ligamentous, bony, and tendinous injuries. Greatest of the reported knee injuries associated with in a non-contact method includes mainly the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Additionally, medial and lateral menisci act as shock absorbers with an additional role in stabilizing the joint which can be or partially or totally torn. The current study aimed to assess athletes' knowledge and attitude concerning the meniscus, meniscal injury, and management. Knowledge and Management of Halitosis in France and Lebanon: A Questionnaire-Based Study.

Halitosis is a growing issue and its management is highly challenging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and treatment strategies used by French (FD) and Lebanese (LD) dentists. A self-administered structured questionnaire was sent to FD and LD comprising questions about professional characteristics, management, and treatment of halitosis, patients' referral, and halitosis-related knowledge. A multivariate analysis was conducted to determine differences between FD and LD and to identify parameters that could influence dentists' management of halitosis. The questionnaire was f

Evaluation and management of atypical femoral fractures: an update of current knowledge.

Atypical femoral fractures are often attributed to the use of anti-resorptive medications such as bisphosphonates (BP). Whilst they have proven effects on fragility fracture prevention, clinical and laboratory evidence is evolving linking BP-related suppression of bone remodelling to the development of atypical stress-related sub-trochanteric fractures (Shane et al. in JBMR 29:1-23, 2014; Odvina et al. in JCEM 90:1294-301, 2005; Durchschlag et al. in JBMR 21(10):1581-1590, 2006; Donnelly et al. in JBMR 27:672-678, 2012; Mashiba et al. in Bone 28(5):524-531, 2001; Dell et al. in JBMR 27(12):254

[Participation in self-help groups: impact on self-management and knowledge].

BACKGROUND: Self-help groups (SHGs) are an inherent part of patient involvement and play an important role in the healthcare system. Until now, however, there has been a lack of systematic investigations and quantitative data about the individual impact of self-help for patients and relatives. OBJECTIVES: This study presents the results of a comparison between members of SHGs and non-members. Thereby, the effects of self-help shall be described in terms of empowerment and self-management. Dysphagia Management in Iran: Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Healthcare Providers.

Despite the remarkable burden of dysphagia, appropriate multidisciplinary management is lacking in Iran and patients are often deprived of effective treatments. Obtaining a full understanding of knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of healthcare providers is necessary to determine the gaps in improvement of the quality of care for dysphagic patients. A questionnaire was designed covering demographic information and the parameters of KAP. Face and content validity were determined. Test-retest reliability confirmed that the questionnaire scores are stable over time (r = 0.77, p value < 0.01).

Bridging the Knowledge Gap: Transforming COPD Management Through Lessons from Asthma.

INTRODUCTION: Advances in asthma immunopathology and the integration of biologic therapies have reshaped clinical practice, and in turn have impacted diagnosis, phenotyping, monitoring, and care organization. Given the persistent burden of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), transferring these strategies may facilitate the implementation of precision medicine in COPD. The BRIDGE project, an educational initiative involving seven pulmonologists, aimed to identify key learnings from asthma that could support the incorporation of immunological insights and biologics into the management

Severe autoimmune hemolytic anemia; epidemiology, clinical management, outcomes and knowledge gaps.

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is an acquired hemolytic disorder, mediated by auto-antibodies, and has a variable clinical course ranging from fully compensated low grade hemolysis to severe life-threatening cases. The rarity, heterogeneity and incomplete understanding of severe AIHA complicate the recognition and management of severe cases. In this review, we describe how severe AIHA can be defined and what is currently known of the severity and outcome of AIHA. There are no validated predictors for severe clinical course, but certain risk factors for poor outcomes (hospitalisation, trans
