Beryllium was detected in the granulomas of all thirty-three cases of CBD examined and was absent in thirty cases of sarcoidosis. It was also found in association with coal dust in one of twelve normal lungs. Beryllium could also be detected in Schaumann bodies and hyalinized scars. Beryllium, though sometimes present in Kveim negative biopsies of CBD patients, was not found in any originating Kveim antigen. Rare earths (La, Ce, Pr and Nd) were unexpectedly found in two of the thirty sarcoid patients but not in any other samples. We have identified the crystalline component of Schaumann bodies

OBJECTIVES: Although sarcoidosis is classically defined to be a disease of young adults, it might also be seen at older ages. There are very few clinical studies which focus on the features of patients diagnosed at older ages. In this study, we tried to determine the frequency of patients diagnosed at or above 50 years of age and to compare the clinical and demographic features of these subjects with other sarcoidosis patients.
METHODS: We evaluated the general clinical features of sarcoidosis patients more than 50 years of age who were diagnosed at our center within a 36-year period. We also

67Gallium scan has been used for years in sarcoidosis as a marker of activity, a determiner of the extent and distribution of the disease, a diagnostic support, and an aid in therapeutic management. Because of its limited sensitivity and specificity for sarcoidosis, however, it is currently used mainly to assist in diagnosis in difficult cases, particularly in those with isolated extrathoracic sarcoidosis. The finding of the typical lambda or panda patterns supports the diagnosis and reinforces the indication to perform an appropriate biopsy or Kveim-Siltzbach test. In addition, the detection

RATIONALE: The etiology of sarcoidosis is unknown, but microbial agents are suspected as triggers.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to identify bacterial, fungal, or viral lineages in specimens from patients with sarcoidosis enriched relative to control subjects using metagenomic DNA sequencing. Because DNA from environmental contamination contributes disproportionately to samples with low authentic microbial content, we developed improved methods for filtering environmental contamination.
METHODS: We analyzed specimens from subjects with sarcoidosis (n = 93), control subjects without sarcoidosis (n =

Planned laparotomy and splenectomy has been a safe investigation for sixty patients with clinical Stage I, II or III Hodgkin's disease. Twenty-four of the 60 patients (40%) changed stage and 18 patients had their treatment altered as a consequence of the procedure. Forty-three per cent of patients without a palpably enlarged spleen had unsuspected disease when the organ was examined pathologically, although a false positive spleen was uncommon. Eight of 55 patients (14.5%) had intra-abdominal disease which was not detected by lymphangiography. Intra-abdominal disease occurred with all histolog

Colony-forming cells (CFC) and colony-forming ability in peripheral blood and bone marrow were studied in 22 patients with different stages of sarcoidosis, with or without the addition of different Kveim preparations. The study showed no statistical differences between the colony growth in healthy persons compared to patients with sarcoidosis in stages I and II. The counts in these groups were, however, lower than in patients with sarcoidosis in stage III (P < 0.01). The lowest counts of CFC were found in the highly active cases suffering from fever, joint pains and erythema nodosum, and these

A 28-year old male was admitted to Musashino Red Cross Hospital on June 21, 1975, because of symptoms of increased intracranial pressure and cerebellar dysfunction. Thirteen months prior to admission he had a mild fever, tremor of right arm, headache, nausea and unsteady gait, but made a gradual recovery in about 40 days. A month prior to admission he had unsteady gate again wit dizziness, photophobia and lacrimation. Gait disturbance aggravated and he was admitted to another hospital, where he developed recent memory disturbance and cloudiness of consciousness. Spinal tap revealed initial pre

The presentation, cardiac anatomy and utility of programmed ventricular stimulation in seven patients with sustained ventricular tachycardia associated with sarcoidosis are described. The mean patient age was 38 +/- 8 years. Pulmonary involvement was apparent in three patients and no systemic manifestations of sarcoidosis were present in one patient. All patients had electrocardiographic abnormalities at rest and six had a left ventricular ejection fraction less than 45%. All seven patients had left ventricular wall motion abnormalities and five had mitral valve dysfunction. Sustained ventricu

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory systemic disease with a prevalence of 20 to 50 of 100,000 inhabitants in West-Germany. Caused by an abnormal immune response to a hypothetic inhalative antigen, a granulomatous inflammation in mediastinal lymph nodes occurs, which frequently extends to the lung and sometimes to other tissues. The nervous system is clinically involved in 5% of the cases. The most frequent neurologic symptom is solitary or combined cranial nerve involvement. Cerebral manifestations are nodular or diffuse granulomatous infiltration of the brain and lymphocytic inflammation of the ba

In 98 cases of pulmonary diseases (active and inactive sarcoidosis, idiopathic interstitial lung fibrosis [Hamman-Rich], collagenous diseases, Goodpasture syndrome, alveolar lipoid proteinosis, malignant lymphogranulomatosis and bronchial carcinoma) and in 18 tuberculin and varidase positive, Kveim negative control cases the migration inhibition factor (MIF) was investigated. Migration inhibition of macrophages was induced by the antigens tuberculin, varidase and Kveim's antigen and measured in Mackaness-chambers 24 hours later. Significant migration inhibition by the antigens tuberculin and v

The historical background to the disorder is unfolded. It was originally regarded as a dermatological curiosity, and later sarcoidosis was recognized as a disorder diffusely involving most tissues of the body. Clinical syndromes described include those presenting to the dermatologist, ophthalmologist, chest physician and radiologist, gastroenterologist and neurologist. Tissues commonly involved are lungs, lymph nodes, eyes, skin and bone in that order of frequency. Granulomatous uveitis in the presence of skin lesions should always arouse the suspicion of sarcoidosis; ocular and bone involveme

BACKGROUND: The clinical value of computed tomographic (CT) scanning of the chest in the initial assessment of sarcoidosis was investigated.
METHODS: One hundred consecutive patients referred to the sarcoidosis outpatient services of the Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York from 1990 to 1992 with a presumptive diagnosis of sarcoidosis were studied. The diagnosis was subsequently confirmed in all by a positive tissue biopsy sample or the Kveim-Siltzbach test. Clinical and laboratory data of each patient were reviewed. Chest radiographs were classified according to the classical stages of sarco

Observation of neurosarcoidosis in a thirty-year-old black female characterised predominantly by bilateral facial nerve paralysis gave rise to a review of literature since 1978 and also to a comparison with an early study in 1963. As described 1963 the clinical picture is characterized by increased protein content of the CSF (33.8%), facial nerve paresis (25.5%), pleocytosis (23%), diabetes insipidus (21%), hemiparesis (17.2%), organic psychosis (16.9%), papilloedema (15.5%), ataxia (13%), convulsive seizures (12.5%), optic atrophy (12.5%), loss of hearing (12.2%), nystagmus (8.6%) and numerou

Sarcoidosis, a multisystem disease of unknown cause characterized by the formation of noncaseating granulomas, may involve any organ of the body, but the commonest sites of predilection are the lungs, lymph nodes, skin, and eyes. Sarcoidosis can be associated with polyclonal hyperglobulinemia, hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, circulating immune complexes, cutaneous anergy, and in vitro depressed cell-mediated immunity. Recent studies of the cellular composition and cellular interactions of sarcoid-involved tissue have resulted in some insight into the pathophysiology of the disease. In early sta

Pathologic criteria in tuberculoid adenitis enable differentiation between follicular adenitis with or without caseous necrosis and that involving suppurative necrosis. The absence of specific etiology is emphasized. Seventy cases of tuberculoid adenitis are analyzed. Of the 62 cases of adenitis labelled tuberculous, bacterial confirmation was obtained in only 22 (35%), suggesting probable diagnosis by excess for the remaining 40 cases. Related bacteriologic problems concern isolation of B.K. of the 3 cases classified as sarcoidosis, it was important to obtain data from broncho-alveolar lavage

Sarcoidosis is an uncommon cause of childhood uveitis. However, the ophthalmologist familiar with the clinical features of childhood sarcoidosis can play a key role in the diagnosis and treatment of this disorder. Two subsets of pediatric sarcoidosis are identified. The 8-15 year age group has almost universal lung involvement, with the eye, skin, liver, and spleen involved in 30-40% of cases. Children 5 years of age and under are characterized by the triad of uveitis, arthropathy, and skin rash. The epidemiology, clinical features, diagnostic evaluation, and ocular management of pediatric sar

Signs and symptoms of neurosarcoidosis are variable and depend on location and size of granulomas. Clinical studies suggest a rate of 5% and autopsy results a rate of more than 25% of central nervous system (CNS) involvement in sarcoidosis. Statistical analysis of 57,789 patients admitted to the Department of Medicine in Lucerne over an 11-year period revealed 51 patients (0.9/1000) with the diagnosis of sarcoidosis. Six of these (12%) had sarcoidosis affecting the CNS. Neurosarcoidosis presented as: leptomeningeal granulomas, cranial nerve palsy, hypothalamic-pituitary syndrome, diabetes insi

Sarcoidosis is a chronic granulomatous disease that can virtually affect any organ. Its etiology is unknown, although it has been proposed that environmental or biological agents can act as triggers, ultimately leading to chronic inflammation in genetically predisposed individuals. The main component of sarcoid inflammation is represented by an exaggerated T- lymphocytic cellular response to a putative antigen that could not be efficiently cleared in the patient. However, several clinical and immunological observations, such as the association of sarcoidosis to autoimmune diseases or the prese
