Numerous studies have been conducted regarding vertebral restoration, development of kyphotic deformity, and pain control following balloon kyphoplasty. However, there is no consensus regarding the ideal time to perform kyphoplasty. Herein, we aimed to compare the results of treatment of different vertebral levels following early or late kyphoplasty.Between 2017 and 2022, 283 patients with single-level osteoporotic vertebral fractures were retrospectively reviewed. Patients in whom visual analog scale (VAS) values were recorded, and osteoporosis tests performed were included in the study. Trau

The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the efficiency of early versus delayed treatment of vertebral fractures by balloon kyphoplasty with regard to fracture age. A total of 106 patients (37 male and 69 female) with 128 vertebral body fractures, an average age of 67.5 years (21 to 92) and a body mass index of 26.4 (16 to 40.4) were recorded. All fractures were evaluated radiologically and clinically. Pain intensity (visual analogue scale 0-10), analgesics consumption (WHO steps 1 to 3) and the relevant surgery data (operating time, cement consumption, complications) were recorded. 3

The use of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) was first described in 1987; however, since its conception its use has broadened. PVP involves the transpedicular injection of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) into the vertebral body for treatment of osteoporotic compression fractures. This paper reviews the history of PVP and percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP), the epidemiology of osteoporotic fractures, key articles regarding its usage, and novel areas of application.

Kyphoplasty is an established procedure for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. Developments in instrumentation and techniques have facilitated its use also for other localizations. In the hands of experienced practitioners smaller working cannulas and balloons have made successful treatment of high thoracic and cervical fractures and metastases possible. Balloon kyphoplasty performed for sacral insufficiency fractures in older patients plagued by chronic pain leads to marked pain reduction as well as faster weight-bearing. There are also early research results regar

Kyphoplasty has become a standard procedure in the treatment of painful osteoporotic compression fractures. According to current guidelines, involvement of the posterior wall of the vertebral body is a relative contraindication. From February 2002 until January 2008, 97 patients with at least one AO classification A 3.1 fracture were treated by kyphoplasty. There was a structured follow-up for the medium-term evaluation of the patients' outcome. Ninety-seven patients (68 of whom were females and 29 of whom were males) with involvement of the vertebra's posterior margin averaging 76.1 +/- 12.36

Our objective was to study the changes in respiratory function of patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) after vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. Thoracic kyphotic angle, local kyphotic angle, pain scores and pulmonary function parameters were measured in 38 older women with OVCFs before, three days after and three months after operation. Vital capacity, forced vital capacity and maximum voluntary ventilation significantly increased three days after operation (P < 0.01), but only maximum voluntary ventilation went on to improve three months later (P < 0.01); the thorac

While Kyphoplasty is increasingly becoming a recognised minimally invasive treatment option for osteoporotic vertebral fractures and neoplastic vertebral collapse, the experience in the treatment of vertebrae of the mid (T5-8)- and high (T1-4) thoracic levels is limited. The slender pedicle morphology restricts the transpedicular approach at these levels, necessitating extrapedicular placement techniques. Fifty five vertebrae of 32 consecutive patients were treated with kyphoplasty at levels ranging from T2-T8 for vertebral fractures (27 patients) or osteolytic collapse (5 patients). All proce

BACKGROUND: Kyphoplasty is a new technique to treat collapsed vertebral body (VB) fractures. The technique is very effective for achieving rapid pain relief, restoring bone height, and consequent vertebral realignment, and thus stabilization of the vertebra.
METHODS: We reviewed 57 patients with vertebral compression fractures. All patients were neurologically intact and presented with severe low back pain or localized pain over the thoracolumbar region. Indications for kyphoplasty were osteoporotic and traumatic compression fractures, osteolytic tumor metastases, and aggressive hemangiomas wit

Using percutaneous kyphoplasty, we treated a patient with a diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome who complained of an unremitting pain in the spine, refractory to the conventional medical therapy, elicited by pressure over the spinous process, and in absence of neurologic deficits. The method provided swift midline back pain relief associated with an evident augmentation in the stability and in the vertebral body's height. The injection of polymethylmethacrylate was effective and safe, no cement leakages were observed, and no complications such as pulmonary embolism, toxicity, or infection wer

The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the effectiveness and safety of Percutaneous Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty, in the treatment of pain deriving from neoplastic vertebral compression fractures (VCF). We treated 33 oncologic patients with these new techniques (2 pts with aggressive haemangiomas, 8 pts with myelomas and 23 pts with metastases) suffering from severe motion pain in the back, notwithstanding conservative treatment with medication and corset therapy, in the absence of neurological signs. In 3 selected patients we associated radiofrequency heat ablation with verte

Vertebral compression fractures are a global public health issue with a quantifiable negative impact on patient morbidity and mortality. The contemporary approach to the treatment of osteoporotic fragility fractures has moved beyond first-line nonsurgical management. An improved understanding of biomechanical forces, consequential morbidity and mortality, and the drive to reduce opioid use has resulted in multidisciplinary treatment algorithms and significant advances in augmentation techniques. This review will inform musculoskeletal radiologists, interventionalists, and minimally invasive sp

PURPOSE: The impact of percutaneous internal fixation as a supplement to percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) for the management of thoracolumbar burst fractures in elderly patients is unclear. We conducted a clinical controlled trial to investigate the effect and outcomes of this technique in such patients.
METHODS: Forty-three patients over 65 years old with thoracolumbar burst fractures without nerve injuries were enrolled. They were randomly assigned to treatment with simple PKP (control group, n = 22) or percutaneous short-segment pedicle screw internal fixation with PKP (treatment group, n =
