Rapid detection of enterovirus infection by automated RNA extraction and real-time fluorescence PCR.

BACKGROUND: Molecular detection has been shown to be superior to tissue culture for the detection of enteroviruses in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens. OBJECTIVES: In this study, a qualitative molecular assay based on automated RNA extraction with the MagNA Pure LC and real-time PCR on the LightCycler (LC) instrument was evaluated and compared with an in-house molecular assay. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 109 CSF specimens were investigated for the comparative study. The detection limit of the new molecular assay was determined with 10-fold dilutions of two enterovirus strains and with the Th

High Adherence Over a Decade of Annual Lung Cancer Screening in an Occupational Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Adherence to an annual low-dose chest CT (LDCT) scan regimen is essential to lung cancer screening success but has been scarcely studied beyond 2 annual CT scans. METHODS: From 2014 to 2024, we conducted annual LDCT screening for 1,498 United States nuclear weapons workers based on age, smoking history, and occupational exposure to lung carcinogens. Labor unions co-sponsored the program in Department of Energy communities. Participants were eligible for up to 8 annual CT scans over a decade. Group adherence at each annual CT scan was calculated as the percentage who completed th

Creation of a Systems-Level Checklist to Address Stress and Violence in Fire-Based Emergency Medical Services Responders.

Between 57 and 93% of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responders reported having experienced verbal or physical violence at least once in their career. Therefore, the primary goal of this study was to develop a systems-level checklist for violence against fire-based EMS responders using findings from a systematic literature review and outcomes from a national stakeholder meeting. First, a literature review of violence against EMS responders resulted in an extensive list of 162 academic and industrial publications. Second, from these sources, 318 potential candidate items were developed. Third

Structured vulnerability: nationality stratifies wages, working conditions, and labor rights among migrant workers in Malaysian oil palm plantations.

Malaysia's palm oil industry, the world's second-largest, depends on migrant labor, with foreign workers making up 80% of its plantation workforce. Despite well-documented labor exploitation, research has typically focused on single nationalities, overlooked the interplay of structural and individual factors, and largely excluded Thai workers from comparative analyses. This study addresses these gaps by comparing the experiences of Thai, Indonesian, and Bangladeshi migrants on plantations along the Thai-Malaysian border. The study uses in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, field observ

Surgical outcome of scaphoid nonunions in heavy manual workers.

The management of scaphoid nonunion in heavy manual workers is challenging. Symptoms appear earlier and manual labor-related stress at the operated nonunion site may worsen the postoperative outcome. This study involved 16 heavy manual workers with scaphoid nonunion (11 cases involving the dominant hand) treated by internal fixation and autologous bone grafting. The nonunion was in 12 patients in the waist, in 3 patients in the proximal, and in 1 patient in the distal pole of the scaphoid. Clinical and radiographic evaluation of union was done according to the criteria of Bynum et al. and Fern

Predictors of delayed return to work after back injury: A case-control analysis of union carpenters in Washington State.

METHODS: Union administrative records identified 20,642 union carpenters who worked in Washington State from 1989 to 2003. The Department of Labor and Industries provided records of workers' compensation claims and associated medical care. Work-related back claims (n = 4,241) were identified by ANSI codes (back, trunk, or neck/back) or ICD-9 codes relevant to medical care consistent with a back injury. Cases (n = 738) were defined as back injury claims with >90 days of paid lost time; controls (n = 699) resulted in return to work within 30 days. Logistic regression models estimated odds ratios

Diagnostic and therapeutic technology assessment. Distraction/compression osteosynthesis with the Ilizarov device.

Although the Ilizarov device (and technique) to treat problematic fractures and bone deformities has been used since the 1950s in the former Soviet Union, the technique was not introduced to the United States until 1984. Since that time, the technique has become increasingly popular because, in comparison with the alternatives, the Ilizarov technique involves only one surgical procedure and it appears to have fewer complications. In addition, the Ilizarov technique was designed to correct multiple deformities simultaneously. The DATTA panelists thought that the technique was established in ter

Mortality in the Baltimore union poultry cohort: non-malignant diseases.

BACKGROUND: Workers in poultry plants have high exposure to a variety of transmissible agents present in poultry and their products. Subjects in the general population are also exposed. It is not known whether many of these agents cause disease in humans. If they do, we reason this would be readily evident in a highly exposed group such as poultry workers. We report here on mortality from non-malignant diseases in a cohort of poultry workers. METHODS: Mortality was compared with that of the US general population, and with that of a comparison group from the same union. Risk was estimated by s

Vascularized capitate transposition for advanced Kienböck disease: application of 40 cases and their anatomy.

Based on anatomic study, the vascularized capitate transposition to replace excised necrotic lunate was designed and applied in 40 cases of advanced Kienböck disease. It includes excision of the necrotic lunate and proximal shift of the vascularized capitate. The blood supply of the transposed capitate is provided by the dorsal branch of the anterior interosseous artery. Bone union occurred radiographically, and no postoperative capitate necrosis occurred in all cases after 6 weeks. Twenty-three cases were followed up for 1 year. No residual wrist pain existed in the range of motion, but limit

Perceived organizational support for safety and employee safety voice: the mediating role of coworker support for safety.

In the present study, we modeled 2 sources of safety support (perceived organizational support for safety and perceived coworker support for safety) as predictors of employee safety voice, that is, speaking out in an attempt to change unsafe working conditions. Drawing on social exchange and social impact theories, we hypothesized and tested a mediated model predicting employee safety voice using a cross-sectional survey of urban bus drivers (n = 213) in the United Kingdom. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that perceived coworker support for safety fully mediated the relationship betwee

A 44-Year-Old Male Manual Laborer With Nonunion of a Femoral Neck Fracture Treated With Ultrasound-Guided Percutaneous Injections of Platelet-Rich Plasma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Femoral neck fractures are prone to nonunion due to compromised vascular supply. While surgical revision remains the standard of care, biological approaches such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a concentrate rich in growth factors that enhance bone healing, offer a less invasive option. This report describes the case of a 44-year-old man, who worked as a manual laborer, with a femoral neck fracture nonunion who refused further surgery and was treated with ultrasound-guided percutaneous injections of PRP. CASE REPORT Nine months after undergoing internal fixation for a complex hip fra

[Disparities in the effect of working conditions on health between immigrant and native-born populations in Spain].

OBJECTIVE: To examine the contribution of working conditions to permanent disability status in the immigrant and native-born populations in Spain by investigating the extent to which these two groups differ in terms of exposure to adverse working conditions and the impact of these conditions on disability status. METHODS: We used a dataset containing ample information on working lives and disability status and specified three probit models that estimated the following: 1) the extent to which working conditions affect the probability of suffering permanent disability, calculated separately for

Respiratory illness in the construction trades. I. The significance of asbestos-associated pleural disease among sheet metal workers.

To assess the rate of roentgenographic and lung function abnormalities in asbestos-exposed construction workers, the authors studied 314 white male members of a local sheet metal workers union. Health outcomes were assessed by questionnaire, simple spirometry, and chest roentgenography; data were collected and interpreted following guidelines of the American Thoracic Society and the International Labor Office. Analyses of union records showed the tested population to be representative of all those eligible for testing. Pleural abnormalities were common, increasing to a prevalence of approximat

Impact of software and hardware technologies on occupational health and safety policies in Saudi Arabian oil refineries.

This article seeks to examine the impact of technology importation on occupational health and safety in both Saudi Arabian and U.S. oil refining industries. Technologies imported to the Saudi oil industry take two forms: hardware (sophisticated equipment to run oil facilities) and software (policies and regulations pertaining to workers' health and safety, and employment rights installed by Aramco's founding multinational companies). This study utilizes qualitative, historically oriented, cross-national case studies to compare and assess workers' health, safety, and rights in Saudi Aramco with
