Congenital peripheral vestibular disease attributed to lymphocytic labyrinthitis in two related litters of Doberman pinscher pups.

Five Doberman Pinscher pups from a litter of 10 (litter A) and 3 of 9 pups from a subsequent mating of the same bitch (litter B) had clinical signs consistent with unilateral or bilateral peripheral vestibular disease. Results of CBC, serum biochemical analysis, urinalysis, ophthalmologic examination, deep otoscopic examination, and CSF analysis were normal in all affected pups. Bacteriologic culture results from CSF were negative and affected pups did not have canine distemper antibody titers in CSF. The most severely affected littermates were euthanatized and necropsied at the owner's reques

Contrast enhancement of the labyrinth on MR scans in patients with sudden hearing loss and vertigo: evidence of labyrinthine disease.

The sudden onset of hearing loss and vertigo presents a difficult diagnostic problem. We describe the finding of labyrinthine enhancement on MR images in five patients with sudden unilateral hearing loss or vertigo or both and correlate the MR findings with audiologic and electronystagmographic studies. All patients were studied with T2-weighted axial images through the whole brain, contrast-enhanced 3-mm axial T1-weighted images through the temporal bone, and enhanced T1-weighted sagittal images through the whole brain. Cochlear enhancement, on the side of hearing loss only, was found in all

Synergistic role of blood-labyrinth barrier permeability and endolymphatic hydrops: a comparative perspective in Ménière's disease and vestibular migraine.

OBJECTIVE: This study compares the delayed gadolinium-enhanced MRI characteristics of Ménière's disease (MD) and vestibular migraine (VM) to develop a multiparametric model that incorporates endolymphatic hydrops (EH), blood-labyrinth barrier permeability, and their asymmetry. Additionally, it investigates the correlations between these imaging features and hearing loss across various frequencies. METHODS: A total of 79 patients-47 with MD and 32 with VM-were enrolled in the study between June 2023 and April 2025. All participants underwent a comprehensive medical history assessment, neurotol

Anti-LCN2 antibody treatment is associated with attenuated hearing loss and blood-labyrinth barrier disruption in a mouse model of chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with sensorineural hearing loss, but the mechanisms linking renal injury to cochlear dysfunction remain incompletely defined. Because lipocalin-2 (LCN2/NGAL) is markedly increased in CKD and has been implicated in endothelial dysfunction and barrier injury, we investigated whether LCN2 contributes to cochlear damage in a mouse model of CKD. Male C57BL/6J mice underwent 5/6 nephrectomy, and CKD mice received either an anti-LCN2 monoclonal antibody or an isotype control three times weekly for seven weeks beginning one week after completion of surgery. Blood-Labyrinth Barrier Permeability in Menière Disease and Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Findings on Delayed Postcontrast 3D-FLAIR MRI.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Menière disease and idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss can have overlapping clinical presentation and may have similar pathophysiology. Prior studies using postcontrast 3D-FLAIR MR imaging suggest abnormal blood-labyrinth barrier permeability in both conditions, but the 2 diseases have not been directly compared by using the same imaging techniques. We hypothesized that delayed postcontrast 3D-FLAIR MR imaging would show differences in blood-labyrinth barrier permeability between Menière disease and idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss. A Catastrophic Case of Idiopathic Cholesterol Crystal Embolism with Multiple Lethal Complications: A Labyrinth Underneath the Diagnosis of Skin Ulcers in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients.

A 66-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of multiple refractory skin ulcers. Based on his severe systemic arterial calcification and severe calcium-phosphate imbalance due to severe kidney dysfunction, we initially considered calciphylaxis. However, a skin biopsy provided a diagnosis of cholesterol crystal embolization. Although we initiated hemodialysis, steroid treatment, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol apheresis, he died of multiple intestinal perforation. An autopsy showed cholesterol crystals occluding multiple organ arterioles. This case suggests that skin ulcers in

MR imaging of intralabyrinthine schwannoma, labyrinthitis, and other labyrinthine pathology.

This article reviews recent imaging developments in various diseases of the membranous labyrinth. Membranous labyrinth is the initial receptor for acoustic stimuli. Exciting progress has been made in the imaging evaluation of the normal and diseased labyrinth. Structures of the membranous labyrinth, such as the cochlea, vestibule, semicircular canals, and endolymphatic duct and sac can be visualized on routine MR scans. Using high-resolution MR imaging techniques, researches have been able to visualize the cochlear duct, scala tympani, scala vestibuli, and even the otolithic mass. The sensitiv

Ben H. Senturia lecture. Leaking labyrinth lesions, deafness, tinnitus and dizziness.

The remarkable integrity of the finely balanced membranous labyrinth is occasionally disrupted, resulting in fistulae of various types in a number of locations. Such leaking labyrinth lesions can be congenital origin, due to various types of malformations. They may be caused by destructive diseases such as syphilis, by many variants of acute and chronic otomastoiditis, and sequelae of otosclerosis surgery, and finally, as results of a variety of traumatic disruptions of labyrinthine integrity. Deafness dizziness, and tinnitus are frequent symptoms and sequelae may include meningitis and other

Morphological changes of stria vascularis in congenital hearing impairment due to membranous labyrinth underdevelopment.

Congenital malformations of the inner ear may involve either the bone and membranous labyrinth or the membranous labyrinth alone. The same labyrinth structures can be affected with an acquired disease, toxaemia or viral labyrinthitis, for instance, with the same or very similar histologic findings. So far, there have been no studies examining the possible morphological changes of stria vascularis in different diseases with sensorineural anomalies. We examined the temporal bones of 16 patients, from whom audiograms and history data on hearing impairments present at birth or later were obtained

The Progressive Nature of Menière's Disease: Stress Projections and Lesion Analysis.

HYPOTHESIS: An engineering model of the labyrinth can provide a mechanism that accounts for the pattern of lesion development observed in Menière's disease. BACKGROUND: Membrane lesions in Menière's disease can occur in virtually every part of the membranous labyrinth. How these lesions are induced is unclear and their mode of distribution uncertain. Pressure induced stress in the membranous labyrinth may play a mechanistic role in lesion formation and distribution. METHODS: An engineering model of the labyrinth was used to provide membrane stress formulations and projections for lesion indu

Present and future of the labyrinth imaging: Focus on the use of T2-weighted and contrast-enhanced delayed FLAIR (1 h) sequences.

OBJECTIVE: Part of the recent progress in the labyrinth imaging has been made possible by the rise of contrast-free T2-weighted and delayed (1h) FLAIR sequences. The aim of this article is to review evidence for the use of these two sequences to image the inner ear, especially the posterior membranous labyrinth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed MRI-based papers (2007-2020)using high-resolution T2-weighted or contrast-enhanced FLAIR (1h) sequences to image the inner ear. RESULTS: T2-weighted sequences (3T MRI)enabled the visualization of the posterior membranous labyrinth with good correlati

Angioneurosis in Menière's disease.

The main aim of this paper was to analyse whether labyrinthic angioneurosis, Menière's disease, can be provoked by immunity reaction at labyrinth level. The Menière's disease immunologic thesis dates back to the 1920's when Duke supposed an allergic origin for Menière's disease. Actually, this allergy could show local autonomic nervous system disturbances. This would be cholinergic and as a consequence, it would involve vascular elements of the inner ear. In any case, one should not forget that it has been found out that some patients suffering from Menière's disease have showed hypersensitivi
