Difference in the foot intersegmental coordination pattern between female lacrosse players with and without a history of medial Tibial stress syndrome; a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Medial tibial stress syndrome is a common sports related injury. Altered foot kinematics can be a risk factor for the injury. Since foot segments can move independently, intersegment coordination is important for proper foot function. This study aimed to compare the foot intersegmental coordination pattern and single segment kinematics between female lacrosse players with and without a history of medial tibial stress syndrome during drop jump. METHODS: Twelve players with a medial tibial stress syndrome history and 12 players with no history were enrolled. Foot kinematics, includi

Sport- and Gender-Based Differences in Head Impact Exposure and Mechanism in High School Sports.

BACKGROUND: Repeated head impacts sustained by athletes have been linked to short-term neurophysiologic deficits; thus, there is growing concern about the number of head impacts sustained in sports. Accurate head impact exposure data obtained via head impact sensors may help identify appropriate strategies across sports and between genders to mitigate repetitive head impacts. PURPOSE: To quantify sport- and gender-based differences in head impact rate and mechanism for adolescents. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. METHODS: High school female and male varsity soccer, basketb

Differences in Body Composition, Bone Density, and Tibial Microarchitecture in Division I Female Athletes Participating in Different Impact Loading Sports.

Sport participation affects body composition and bone health, but the association between sport, body composition, and bone health in female athletes is complex. We compared areal bone mineral density (aBMD, DXA) and tibial volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD), geometry, microarchitecture, and estimated strength (HR-pQCT) in cross-country runners (n = 22), gymnasts (n = 23) and lacrosse players (n = 35), and investigated associations of total body lean mass (TBLM), team, and their interaction with tibial bone outcomes. Total body (TB), total hip (TH), femoral neck (FN), and lumbar spine (LS)

Comparative analysis of sport-related concussions in stick-handling sports.

INTRODUCTION: Concussions are common in stick-handling sports, including lacrosse or hockey, where high-speed play combines player contact with equipment- and projectile-related impacts. In a cohort of lacrosse and hockey athletes who sustained a sport-related concussion (SRC), this study compared: 1) injury mechanisms, 2) initial symptom burden, and 3) recovery timelines between the sports. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study of patients (12-23 years) with SRC from lacrosse or hockey, injury mechanism was categorized as player-to-surface, player-to-player, player-to-stick, or player-

Isolated Lateral Calf Compartment Syndrome from a Sports Injury: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

CASE: A 17-year-old lacrosse player presented 2 days after ankle injury with increasing lateral calf pain and lateral ankle numbness. Testing demonstrated a lateral compartment pressure of 134 mm Hg. The patient underwent emergent anterior and lateral compartment release. The peroneus longus and brevis were dusky, but regained perfusion. The patient's serum creatine kinase (CK) spiked initially because of reperfusion injury but ultimately normalized. CONCLUSION: Isolated nontraumatic lateral compartment syndrome is extremely rare. Compartment release in a timely fashion restores perfusion to

California encephalitis in Alabama.

Arthropod-borne virus (arbovirus) infections in humans are primarily central nervous system infections, but other clinical manifestations include febrile illness and fever with hemorrhagic diathesis. In the genus Bunyavirus there are several viruses that cause disease in humans, especially in North America; these include LaCrosse, Jamestown Canyon, trivittatus, and snowshoe hare viruses. The disease seen mainly in children is California encephalitis (usually of the LaCrosse subtype); this infection is widespread in the United States but is most prevalent in the upper Midwest, especially in rur

Testicular Rupture Following Blunt Scrotal Trauma.

Testicular rupture after blunt scrotal trauma is characterized by rupture of the tunica albuginea and extrusion of seminiferous tubules. This is a serious injury and appropriate evaluation and management are necessary both for symptom control, but also for preservation of the testicle. Clinical examination of the scrotum following trauma is difficult and may result in incorrect triage of patients for surgical exploration. This case study describes the assessment and management of blunt testicular trauma in an adolescent lacrosse player.

Don't Forget Commotio Cordis.

Non-penetrating chest blows can occasionally trigger fatal ventricular tachyarrhythmias and sudden death (commotio cordis). Such events were initially reported in association with sporting activities and projectiles such as baseball/lacrosse balls. However, similar potentially fatal chest blows, seemingly incapable of causing death, can occur during a variety of other circumstances such as when delivered during a fight (by a fist) such as in the accompanying paper. Notably, commotio cordis events can be reversed by resuscitation and defibrillation.
