Effective inactivation of hepatitis A virus in the edible Ulva lactuca seaweed using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)-plasma treatment.

Contamination with the hepatitis A virus (HAV) represents a significant etiological factor in acute hepatitis, occasionally progressing to liver failure. HAV transmission is primarily linked to the consumption of HAV-polluted water and food. The effectiveness of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma on the infectivity reduction of a HAV strain on edible seaweed Ulva lactuca was evaluated under varying treatment durations (control, 10, 30, and 60 min), and its impact on the quality of the seaweed was also examined. To identify infectious and non-infectious virus components, HAV was exposed

Role of post-harvest abiotic factors on interactions of Salmonella typhimurium with lettuce leaves (Lactuca sativa L. var crispa).

Foodborne gastroenteritis outbreaks of Salmonella Typhimurium infections are often associated with leafy vegetables. In addition to biotic factors, attachment and adhesion to the vegetable leaves and subsequent survival and internalization in the tissues in the post-harvest stages are mediated by abiotic factors, mainly light, temperature and time. This study combined quantitative cultural methods and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to investigate the influence of light (dark = 0 μE m-2s-1 and light = 100 μE m-2s-1), temperature (4 °C, 12 °C and 25 °C) and storage time (0 h, 24 h, 48 h and

Zinc oxide nanoparticles reduce cadmium accumulation in hydroponic lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) by increasing photosynthetic capacity and regulating phenylpropane metabolism.

Due to the continuous production of industrial wastes and the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, severe cadmium (Cd) pollution in soil has occurred globally. This study investigated the impacts of incorporating zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) into hydroponically grown lettuce (Lactuca sativa) under cadmium stress conditions, to seek effective methods to minimize Cd buildup in green leafy vegetables. The results showed that 1 mg/L of Cd significantly inhibited lettuce growth, decreasing in leaves (29 %) and roots (33 %) biomass. However, when lettuce was exposed to 2.5 mg/L

Antimicrobial activity of extracts from macroalgae Ulva lactuca against clinically important Staphylococci is impacted by lunar phase of macroalgae harvest.

UNLABELLED: Staphylococcus aureus is a common human bacterial pathogen that causes skin and soft tissue infections. Methicillin-resistant Staph. aureus (MRSA) are increasingly drug-resistant, and thus there is great need for new therapeutics to treat Staph. aureus infections. Attention has focused on potential utility of natural products, such as extracts of marine macroalgae, as a source of novel antimicrobial compounds. The green macroalgae Ulva lactuca produces compounds inhibitory to human pathogens, although the effectiveness of U. lactuca extracts against clinically relevant strains of S

Response mechanism of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) under combined stress of Cd and DBDPE: An integrated physiological and metabolomics analysis.

DBDPE and Cd are representative contaminants commonly found in electronic waste (e-waste), which tend to be gradually discharged and accumulated in the environment during e-waste dismantling, resulting in frequent outbreaks and detection of these pollutants. The toxicity of both chemicals to vegetables after combined exposure has not been determined. The accumulation and mechanisms of phytotoxicity of the two compounds, alone and in combination, were studied using lettuce. The results showed that the enrichment ability of Cd and DBDPE in root was significantly higher than that in aerial part.

Molecular aspects of the antagonistic interaction of smoke-derived butenolides on the germination process of Grand Rapids lettuce (Lactuca sativa) achenes.

Smoke-derived compounds provide a strong chemical signal to seeds in the soil seed bank, allowing them to take advantage of the germination niche created by the occurrence of fire. The germination stimulatory activity of smoke can largely be attributed to karrikinolide (KAR(1) ), while a related compound, trimethylbutenolide (TMB), has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on germination. The aim of this study was to characterize the interaction of these potent fire-generated compounds. Dose-response analysis, leaching tests and a detailed transcriptome study were performed using highly KAR(
