Histiocytic sarcoma is a relatively new disease category and the gastrointestinal origin is sporadic. We report a case of a 74-year-old woman who underwent chemotherapy and proximal gastrectomy for extremely rare, advanced gastric histiocytic sarcoma. The resected specimen was subjected to numerous immunostainings to meet the diagnostic criteria of histiocytic sarcoma and was positive for the histiocyte markers' cluster of differentiation 68 and lysozyme. The markers of Langerhans cells, follicular dendritic cells, and myelocyte were all negative. Six reports of surgical resection of histiocyt

BACKGROUND: Langerhans cell histiocytosis previously known as histiocytosis X is a rare disease of children and young adults with a very broad clinical spectrum. In children, its annual incidence is estimated between 0.2-0.5 per 100,000.
CASE REPRESENTATION: An 8-year-old Moroccan girl with no known personal or family history presented to our institution with painful swelling of both forearms. An X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging were inconclusive. We then performed a biopsy curettage (of her left forearm). Microscopic analysis followed by immunohistochemical analysis disclosed a diagnosis

BACKGROUND: The relationship between various external agents such as pollen, food, and infectious agents and human sensitivity exists and is variable depending upon individual's health conditions. For example, we believe that the pathogenetic potential of the Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV), the resident virus in skin, is variable and depends from the degree of individual's reactivity. MCPyV as well as Epstein-Barr virus, which are normally connected with humans under the form of subclinical infection, are thought to be involved at various degrees in several neoplastic and inflammatory diseas

Eight histiocytic sarcomas, identified by examination of more than 2000 malignant lymphomas, are described. For comparison, tumor infiltrates from five monoblastic leukemias were also analyzed. The histiocytic sarcomas were all high-grade malignancies consisting of markedly pleomorphic large cells with many mitotic figures. At presentation, six of the patients had systemic symptoms (fever, fatigue, loss of weight), skin infiltrates, and lymphadenopathy. Despite aggressive chemotherapy, clinical remissions were short, and six patients died of disease .5-48 months (mean, 6.5 months) after diagno

Histiocytic sarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm. It is well-known the association of Langerhans' cell histiocytosis with Hodgkin's disease but only few cases of histiocytic sarcoma associated with Hodgkin's disease was reported. We present the case of 20-years-old female patient with Hodgkin's disease with a sternal tumor mass which was diagnosed as histiocytic sarcoma. The diagnostic was established immunohistochemically, using a large battery of antibodies (S-100, CD 68, CD 34, CD 15, CD 30, Vim, NFAP) and by electron microscopy which revealed the lack of the Birbeck granules in the maligna

We describe the clinicopathologic features of 15 patients who had histiocytic lesions that followed acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Twenty-one separate histiocytic lesions were evaluated that covered a wide spectrum, some conforming to the usual categories of juvenile xanthogranulomas (5), Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (1), Langerhans' cell sarcoma (4), Rosai-Dorfman disease (1), and histiocytic sarcoma (4). Most were atypical for the category by histology, phenotype, or abnormally high turnover rate. Seven low-grade lesions defied easy categorization and were characterized only as "atypi

In this review, we discuss a logical approach to diagnosis of histiocytic and dendritic cell lesions of the mediastinum. We break down the differential diagnosis between true neoplasms of histiocytic and dendritic cells [Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD), Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), and follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS)] versus selected neoplasms of other lineages which frequently attract non-neoplastic histiocytes or resemble them morphologically (carcinoma, melanoma, sarcoma, germinoma, mesothelioma, and lymphoma). As neoplasms in the latter category are more common, they should be

PURPOSE: Histiocytic and dendritic cell neoplasms are rare hematologic tumors. This study aimed to describe the epidemiologic features of the entire spectrum of histiocytic and dendritic cell neoplasms, including clinicopathological variables and patient outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We comprehensively reviewed 274 patients who were diagnosed with histiocytic and dendritic neoplasms at Severance Hospital, Seoul, South Korea between 1995 and 2018.
RESULTS: The most common neoplasm was Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), followed by dermal xanthogranuloma. Among non-LCH sarcomas, histiocyt

The traditional model of hematopoiesis is based on unidirectional maturation of hematopoietic precursors into lineage-committed cells. However, recent studies indicate that mature B lymphocytes may demonstrate significant lineage plasticity. We and others have reported transdifferentiation of follicular lymphomas (FLs) into clonally related histiocytic/dendritic cell neoplasms. Here, we describe 2 patients with FL who developed clonally related Langerhans cell neoplasms. The first was a 52-year-old man diagnosed with FL, grade 1. He received immunochemotherapy and had stable disease for 8 year

Histiocytic sarcoma, a rare hematopoietic neoplasm with evidence of histiocytic differentiation, is often refractory to conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and its prognosis is generally dismal. The optimal management of this malignancy has not been established. We report a case of 8-year-old girl with histiocytic sarcoma involving the left femur. The tumor rapidly responded to a combination of cladribine and high-dose cytosine arabinoside, an aggressive salvage regimen for refractory Langerhans cell histiocytosis, and became impalpable during the first cycle. The patient has remained

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare neoplastic disorder characterized by the clonal proliferation of CD1a +/CD 207 + dendritic cells, whose features are similar to those of epidermal Langerhans cells. LCH is more common in children than in adults. Localized osteolytic lesions in the craniofacial bones are the most common manifestations of LCH. However, LCH can also present as a multifocal and multisystem disease with poor prognosis. Locally aggressive LCH needs to be differentiated from various diseases such as osteomyelitis, malignant bone tumors, and soft tissue sarcomas. However,

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma is a very rare entity in the spectrum of histiocytic and dendritic cell neoplasms that mostly occurs in lymph nodes, generally presenting as solitary lymphadenopathy, but may affect every organ. Among extra nodal sites, cutaneous interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma is exceedingly rare; to date, only 9 cases have been described in English literature. The mean age at diagnosis was 60 years, with a male-female ratio of 1,5 to 1; clinically, two different modalities of skin presentation have been reported: solitary, represented by a single red-brownish nod

Sporotrichosis is a fungal infection known for its distinct pattern of infectious skin nodules. Several conditions can present with lesions that appear in a sporotrichoid pattern. An 82-year-old man that presented with three cutaneous nodules on his right leg in a sporotrichoid manner is described; biopsy of each lesion revealed a keratoacanthoma. In addition to keratoacanthomas, other neoplasms-albeit rarely-may be observed to occur in a sporotrichoid manner. These included squamous cell carcinoma (three patients), lymphoma (two patients), and one patient with each of the following: epithelio

Diseases of the jaw bones in children can be monostotic or polyostotic. Examples are fibrous dysplasia and Langerhans cell granulomatosis. Sarcomas of the jaw bones are rare, but do occur with some preference in children. The dentist should be aware of the clinical and even more so of the rather typical radiologic changes in such diseases.

Histiocytic neoplasms in the children are very rare, and histiocytoses can occur in the perinatal period. The presumed origins and presentation of specific histiocytoses in the pediatric age group are described. Common and newly described histiocytoses are presented including Langerhans cell histiocytosis, Rosai-Dorfman disease, histiocytic sarcoma, ALK positive histiocytosis, and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. Molecular findings common to pediatric histiocytoses are also discussed.

The historic term 'histiocytosis' meaning 'tissue cell' is used as a unifying concept for diseases characterized by pathogenic myeloid cells that share histological features with macrophages or dendritic cells. These cells may arise from the embryonic yolk sac, fetal liver or postnatal bone marrow. Prior classification schemes align disease designation with terminal phenotype: for example, Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) shares CD207+ antigen with physiological epidermal Langerhans cells. LCH, Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD), juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) and Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) are

Histiocytic proliferative disorders are commonly observed in dogs and less often cats. Histiocytic disorders occur in most of the dendritic cell (DC) lineages. Canine cutaneous histiocytoma originates from Langerhans cells (LCs) indicated by expression of CD1a, CD11c/CD18, and E-cadherin. When histiocytomas occur as multiple lesions in skin with optional metastasis to lymph nodes and internal organs, the disease resembles cutaneous Langerhans cell histiocytosis of humans. Langerhans cell disorders do not occur in feline skin. Feline pulmonary LCH has been recognized as a cause of respiratory f

BACKGROUND: Granulocytic sarcoma (GS) is the rare extramedullary manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia that may precede or be concurrent with leukemic infiltration of bone marrow or herald blastic transformation of a chronic myeloproliferative disorder. It has been found in most body sites and shows no age or sex predilection, necessitating its inclusion in the differential diagnosis of undifferentiated neoplasms.
CASE: A 36-year-old female presented with a three-year history of abdominal pain, jaundice and fluctuating abdominal girth. Cytology of the ascitic fluid revealed myeloid cells of

Histiocytic and dendritic cell (H/DC) neoplasms are heterogeneous, originating from myeloid- or stromal-derived cells. Multiple reports describe the cross-lineage transdifferentiation of neoplastic B cells into H/DC neoplasms. Most such cases are from Western countries, and rarely from Japan or East Asia. Here we report 17 cases of H/DC neoplasms in Japanese patients, with analysis of t(14;18) by fluorescence in situ hybridization, and of neoplastic programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression by immunostaining (clones SP142, E1J2J, and 28-8). These 17 cases were diagnosed according to the 201
