As one of the most common neurological diseases in children, epilepsy affects 0.9-2% of children. Complex interactions among the etiologies of epilepsy, interictal discharges, seizures, and antiepileptic drugs lead to cognitive impairments in children with epilepsy. Since epilepsy is considered as a network disorder, in which seizures have a widespread impact on many parts of the brain, childhood epilepsy can even affect the normal development of language. About 25% of children with epilepsy do not respond to medications; therefore, brain surgery is considered as a treatment option for some of

BACKGROUND: Children who meet language test criteria for specific language impairment (SLI) are not necessarily the same as those who are referred to a speech and language therapist.
AIMS: To consider how far this discrepancy reflects insensitivity of traditional language tests to clinically important features of language impairment.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: A total of 245 twin children, 52 of whom had been referred to a speech and language therapist for assessment or intervention, were studied. They were given a battery of language tests and their parents completed the Children's Communication

PURPOSE: As shown previously, when temporal lobe complex partial seizures (TLCPS) originate from the language dominant hemisphere, patients cannot read a test phrase correctly within 60 s of the end of the ictal discharge. We wished to assess whether postictal language testing results discordant with this pattern identified patients with non-left (right hemisphere or mixed) language dominance.
METHODS: Since 1988, all patients undergoing video/EEG monitoring at our institution have been given a test phrase to read aloud as soon as a seizure is detected. Inclusion criteria for this study were

This study explores the relation between oral language, spoken dialect variation, and reading achievement among Black children from low-income backgrounds, with an emphasis on identifying within-group variability. Few studies have examined how these variables interact to influence literacy outcomes. Using data from 797 children in Grades 1 to 4 (ages: 6-11 years), we conducted a two-part analysis. First, confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess the structure of language, dialect variation, and reading performance. The study found that while these skills are interconnected, they remain d

Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder primarily affecting language in the absence of a known biomedical condition, which may have a large impact on a person's life and mental health. Family-based studies indicate a strong genetic component in DLD, but genetic studies of DLD are scarce. In this study we estimated the heritability of DLD and its genetic correlations with related disorders and traits in sample of >25,000 individuals from the Danish Blood Donor Study for whom we had both genotype data and questionnaire data on language disorder and language support

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The benefits of dual-language immersion (DLI) versus English-only classrooms for minority-language speakers' acquisition of English have been well documented. However, less is known about the effect(s) of DLI on majority-language speakers' native English skills. Prior studies largely used accuracy-focused measures to index children's language skills; it is possible that processing-based tasks are more sensitive to the effects of DLI experience.
METHODOLOGY: Thirty-three monolingual native English-speaking children attending English-only classrooms and thirty-three English

PURPOSE: Although many valid, reliable, and developmentally sensitive measures exist to monitor the language gains of children who rely on spoken language to communicate, the same is not true for graphic symbol communicators. This study is a first step in developing such measures by examining the interobserver agreement (IOA) and within-observer agreement of 13 measures designed to monitor the language progress of children who use aided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). These measures are based on the Graphic Symbol Utterance and Sentence Development Framework (Binger et al., 2

Purpose The speech-language pathologist's (SLP's) role for the specific language impairment (SLI) population is to provide specialized intervention targeting underlying deficits. However, children with SLI are often underrepresented on caseloads despite a high prevalence of the disorder and known long-term impacts. This study explored how SLPs use research to inform clinical decision making for SLI under neutral workplace circumstances. Method A national web-based survey was distributed to SLPs ( n = 563) to investigate assessment and intervention clinical decision making for individuals with

BACKGROUND: The intracarotid amobarbital procedure (IAP) is widely used in the preoperative evaluation for epilepsy surgery to lateralize language dominance and memory functions. However, language mapping has most often been accomplished with cortical brain stimulation.
OBJECTIVE: To examine left temporal lobe language cortex representation using this technique in patients with bilateral language (BL) as compared with patients with left language dominance (LD).
METHODS: The language maps of each patient were reviewed retrospectively. Group I consisted of 10 patients with BL and Group II cons

At 3 years of age the spontaneous language of 17 typically developing children was compared to two groups of toddlers who were at risk for language delay for very different reasons. One at-risk group, late talkers, appeared normal in all respects except for their delayed language. These 20 children scored at or below the fifteenth percentile for expressive vocabulary on the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory (Fenson et al., 1993) when originally identified at 20-27 months of age and within the normal range on the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (Bayley, 1969). The other group, 2

Objective: Language and executive functioning are two domains commonly impacted in ALS and should be assessed sensitively and briefly. This paper investigates the utility of the Brief Executive Language Screen (BELS) in ALS. Methods: ALS patients (N = 27) were compared to age, education, and pre-morbid intelligence-matched healthy controls (N = 91) at the group level using ANCOVA and t-tests. A case series was also conducted to explore individual and subgroup performance on the BELS and Edinburgh Cognitive and Behavioral ALS Screen (ECAS). Results: Groups were largely matched on neuropsycholog

BACKGROUND: Spoken and written language are closely linked, and Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) have expertise in the language skills that support both. However, unlike countries such as the US and Australia, UK SLTs lack clear guidance on their role in written language. This study explores the views of SLTs working with adults (aged 16+) and children to inform consideration of a UK position statement.
AIMS: To examine UK SLTs' views on their role and scope of practice in written language assessment and intervention, and to ascertain whether a position statement is needed.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are highly heterogenous in their language abilities. A number of studies have shown neural correlates of language deficits in children with ASD, but the underlying neuroanatomical foundation of early language deficits in ASD remains largely elusive. In this study, we analyzed MRI data from a cohort of Chinese children with ASD (n = 67) and typical development (TD, n = 37) aged 1.5 to 6.5 years. The ASD sample was classified into two subgroups based on the median of the language scores: ASD with moderate language deficits (ASDmoderate, n = 34) and AS

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most common neurodegenerative disease that belongs to the group of motor neuron diseases. Motor deficits like reduce in tongue strength, may coexist with cognitive deficits compatible with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), also known as frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). FTD is a neurodegenerative syndrome with two main clinical variants: behavioral (bvFTD) and language or Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). ALS and FTD have significant clinical and neuropathological overlapping so that for some researchers they are "the ends of the same disease sp

PURPOSE: To examine the impact of language background and language-related disorders (LRDs--dyslexia and/or language impairment) on performance in English speech and nonspeech tests of auditory processing (AP) commonly used in the clinic.
METHOD: A clinical database concerning 133 multilingual children (mostly with English as an additional language) and 71 monolingual children (7- to 12-year-old native English speakers) with listening concerns was analyzed retrospectively.
RESULTS: Language background had no significant effect on the 3 nonspeech AP tests, but the multilingual group performed

Generic language (e.g., "Birds have hollow bones") conveys generalizations about categories and is a fundamental and ubiquitous mechanism of learning about the world. How exactly learning from generics occurs, however, is unclear: Generics exhibit so much flexibility in how they are interpreted that a formal, quantitative theory of how generic language updates beliefs has not only never been developed or tested, but the very notion has often been explicitly dismissed. Here, we explore a hypothesis implicit in the work of Tessler and Goodman (2019) that generics update beliefs via an uncertain

In this review, the development of communication systems and devices that convey language tactually is examined, first from an historical perspective focusing on the communities who use the tactile modality to substitute for impairments in vision and/or hearing. Then, the more recent developments in wearable tactile communication systems for conveying text and speech to those without sensory impairments are reviewed. The performance of tactile display technology developed for these user communities is discussed in the context of the proficiency achieved by skilled users of natural methods of t

Language has been argued to arise, both ontogenetically and phylogenetically, from specific patterns of brain wiring. We argue that it can further be shown that core features of language processing emerge from particular phasal and cross-frequency coupling properties of neural oscillations; what has been referred to as the language 'oscillome.' It is expected that basic aspects of the language oscillome result from genetic guidance, what we will here call the language 'oscillogenome,' for which we will put forward a list of candidate genes. We have considered genes for altered brain rhythmicit

Post-stroke language disorders are frequent and include aphasia, alexia, agraphia and acalculia. There are different definitions of aphasias, but the most widely accepted neurologic and/or neuropsychological definition is that aphasia is a loss or impairment of verbal communication, which occurs as a consequence of brain dysfunction. It manifests as impairment of almost all verbal abilities, e.g., abnormal verbal expression, difficulties in understanding spoken or written language, repetition, naming, reading and writing. During the history, many classifications of aphasia syndromes were estab

Developmental language learning impairments (LLI) are one of the most prevalent of all developmental disabilities, can occur in children for a wide variety of reasons, and have been shown to co-occur frequently with other developmental social, emotional and behavioral disorders, as well as with academic achievement problems. Research pertaining to developmental LLI of unknown origin, with an emphasis on the continuum between oral and written language impairment, is the focus of this review. Given the complexity of language learning, research has focused on multiple levels of analysis, includin
