The applicability of normalisation process theory to speech and language therapy: a review of qualitative research on a speech and language intervention.

BACKGROUND: The Bercow review found a high level of public dissatisfaction with speech and language services for children. Children with speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN) often have chronic complex conditions that require provision from health, education, and community services. Speech and language therapists are a small group of Allied Health Professionals with a specialist skill-set that equips them to work with children with SLCN. They work within and across the diverse range of public service providers. The aim of this review was to explore the applicability of Normalisation

Educational provision for children with specific speech and language difficulties: perspectives of speech and language therapy service managers.

BACKGROUND: Children with specific speech and language difficulties (SSLD) pose a challenge to the education system, and to speech and language therapists who support them, as a result of their language needs and associated educational and social-behavioural difficulties. The development of inclusion raises questions regarding appropriate provision, whether the tradition of language units or full inclusion into mainstream schools. AIMS: To gather the views of speech and language therapy service managers in England and Wales regarding approaches to service delivery, terminology and decision-ma

Promoting awareness of open access publishing in speech-language therapy and audiology: Lessons from multilingual language assessment research.

Access to speech-language therapy (SLT) and audiology (AUD) research is critical for clinicians, researchers, policymakers and the public to fulfil the professional scope of practice, support advocacy and enable evidence-based service delivery. However, research locked behind paywalls disproportionately limits access for underserved communities and for clinician-researchers seeking tools in languages with scarce resources. Limited access to clinically applicable research disproportionately affects individuals needing SLT and/or AUD services in under-resourced languages and populations, where c

Beyond Stuttering: Speech-Language Pathologists' Perceptions of Therapy for Children Who Stutter With Concomitant Speech and Language Needs.

PURPOSE: Stuttering therapy is complex, addressing speech, cognitive, affective, and social factors. Children who stutter often present with co-occurring speech and language disorders. Historically, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have reported less comfort with stuttering treatment compared with other speech and language disorders. The current study used a combined quantitative and qualitative approach to investigate SLPs' perceptions of the therapy they provide to an individual child who stutters with one or more concomitant disorders on their caseload. METHOD: Forty-five SLPs completed

The knowledge and attitudes of occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech-language therapy students, regarding the speech-language therapist's role in the hospital stroke rehabilitation team.

The purpose of the present study was to survey and compare the knowledge and attitudes of final year occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech-language therapy students, concerning the role of the speech-language therapist as a member of the stroke rehabilitation team in the hospital setting. In order to achieve this aim, a questionnaire was administered to final year students in these three disciplines, and included questions on most areas of stroke rehabilitation with which the speech-language therapist might be involved, as well as the concepts of rehabilitation and teamwork in relatio

Noninvasive brain stimulation to augment language therapy for poststroke aphasia.

Behavioral language treatment approaches represent the standard of care for persons with aphasia (PWA), but the benefits of these treatments are variable. Moreover, due to the logistic and financial limitations on the amount of behavioral therapy available to patients, it is often infeasible for PWA to receive behavioral interventions with the level of frequency, intensity, or duration that would provide significant and lasting benefit, underscoring the need for novel, effective treatment approaches. Noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TM

Speech and language therapy approaches to managing primary progressive aphasia.

The term primary progressive aphasia (PPA) describes a group of neurodegenerative disorders with predominant speech and language dysfunction as their main feature. There are three main variants - the semantic variant, the nonfluent or agrammatic variant and the logopenic variant - each with specific linguistic deficits and different neuroanatomical involvement. There are currently no curative treatments or symptomatic pharmacological therapies. However, speech and language therapists have developed several impairment-based interventions and compensatory strategies for use in the clinic. Unfort

Reliability of speech and language therapists using therapy outcome measures.

The Therapy Outcome Measure (TOM) aims to provide Speech and Language Therapists (SLT) with a practical tool to measure outcomes of care by providing a quick and simple measure which can be used over time with patients and clients in a routine clinical setting. The TOM allows therapists to reflect their clinical judgement on the dimensions of impairment, disability/activity, handicap/participation and well-being on an 11-point ordinal scale. The purpose of this paper is to examine the reliability and the influences on reliability of SLT using this measure. Three studies are presented and give

Reflections on clinical learning in novice speech-language therapy students.

BACKGROUND: Reflective practice is reported to enhance clinical reasoning and therefore to maximize client outcomes. The inclusion of targeted reflective practice in academic programmes in speech-language therapy has not been consistent, although providing opportunities for speech-language therapy students to reflect during their clinical practice has been reported. Indeed, there has been limited investigation of the nature of speech-language therapy students' reflections. AIMS: (1) To describe the breadth and depth of reflection skills of novice speech-language therapy students by utilizing

Language guiding therapy: the case of dehydration versus volume depletion.

Indiscriminate use of the terms dehydration and volume depletion, so carefully crafted by our predecessors, risks confusion and therapeutic errors. These two conditions should be distinguished at the bedside and in how we speak to one another. Dehydration largely refers to intracellular water deficits stemming from hypertonicity and a disturbance in water metabolism. The diagnosis of dehydration cannot be established without laboratory analysis of p[Na +] or calculation of serum tonicity. In contrast, volume depletion describes the net loss of total body sodium and a reduction in intravascular

Temporal processing as a base for language universals: cross-linguistic comparisons on sequencing abilities with some implications for language therapy.

PURPOSES: The study sets the stage for temporal information processing as a fundamental basis of human cognition and a novel neurorehabilitation method. We focus on auditory perception of temporal order and address the following questions: (1) do subjects' age, gender, hearing status and cognitive functioning influence temporal ordering abilities; (2) are there any differences between Polish and German subjects on these abilities? METHODS: 86 Polish and 82 German subjects aged from 20 to 69 years were classified into 5 age groups. Subjects identified the order of two 1-ms clicks presented mon

The curriculum of practice: a conceptual framework for speech-language therapy and audiology practice with a black African first language clientele.

This paper discusses the use of a conceptual framework (i.e., the curriculum of practice) to guide the transformation of professional practice toward equitable service provision, rooted in a research finding that South African Speech-Language Therapy & Audiology has a favourable service bias toward White English/Afrikaans first language speakers (Pillay, 1997b). Three perspectives of practice are discussed, i.e., the official, espoused and actual perspectives. Also, the various elements of practice are reviewed, and include clinical practice activities, resources and their utilization, profess

Career choice processes in occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and physiotherapy: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Allied health professions, including occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and physiotherapy, are integral to modern healthcare systems. Despite their importance, these fields face ongoing challenges in recruiting and retaining qualified professionals. A better understanding of the factors influencing career choice in these professions is essential for developing targeted workforce strategies. This scoping review aims to systematically identify, categorise, and synthesise influencing factors and underlying theoretical frameworks related to career choice processes in th

The Application of Artificial Intelligence in Speech and Language Therapy: Attitudes and Expectations.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) shows promise to support the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases in medicine and therapy. However, ethics is a priority concern in the development and implementation of AI across sectors. Common ethical themes in the healthcare literature of the last 5 years surround algorithmic bias, accountability, privacy, transparency and trust issues. The question arises how these challenges apply to speech and language therapy (SLT). Stakeholder attitudes towards the use of AI in healthcare have been investigated for the populations of physicians, med

Economic Evaluations of Speech and Language Therapy Interventions: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: With constrained funding and increasing demand, the pressures on health and care services globally continue to grow. Given the challenges faced, it is imperative that services and interventions demonstrate cost-effectiveness, as well as patient/service-user and societal benefits, to maximize impact. Research has started to explore the cost-effectiveness of speech and language therapy (SLT) interventions, but little is known about this body of evidence overall. Given the increasing demand for economic information by different decision-makers, an overall understanding of the current
