This prospective study (1977-1980) of cosmetic adverse reactions by eleven dermatologists identified 487 cases of cosmetic-induced dermatitis. Approximately half of the cases were covert in nature. Eight percent were due to allergic contact dermatitis; the face, eye, and upper arm were the most involved sites. The permeability barrier of the mucosa is dependent on the presence of specific lipids. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the application of a eutectic mixture of anesthetic cream (EMLA cream) can decrease the pain of lidocaine injection during vasectomy.
METHODS: A double-blind, prospective study was performed in which each patient acted as his own control. One hour before a double-incision vasectomy, EMLA cream was applied to one side of the scrotum and a white lanolin hand cream to the other side. A double-incision vasectomy was performed, and each patient was asked to rate the pain associated with each side of the procedure.

Miliaria profunda is an uncommon but highly characteristic disorder that can be disabling. We describe a patient with miliaria profunda who responded to therapy with anhydrous lanolin and isotretinoin. Clinical features, pathogenesis, differential diagnosis, and therapy are reviewed.

112 patients with stasis dermatitis and chronic leg ulcers have been studied by patch testing. Positive reactions to one or more haptens were recorded in 75 patients (67%). The more frequent reactions were observed to lanolin, balsam of Perù, para group, glycols and benzoyl peroxide. The results are briefly discussed.

Cancer agencies recommend that patients use mild soap when undergoing external beam radiotherapy to minimise skin reactions. Proflavine lotion is a commonly used topical antiseptic in the tropics, but its sensitizing potential was never emphasized and many who developed allergic contact dermatitis were never aware of it. In a study of 45 patients, most presented with acute or subacute dermatitis which started on the arms and legs. Concomitant cutaneous sensitivity to other medicaments and lanolin occurred in 66% of the patients.

First mentioning the immunological processes of contact dermatoses, the authors study the six contact allergies encountered most frequently by them during the course of 133 cases of leg ulcers which they treated. They consider in detail the allergenic action of the following six substances: lanolin, neomycin, balsam of Peru, paraben, phenylenediamine and benzocaine. They pioneer therapies intended to prevent the risk of sensitization.

Common ingredients of vehicles such as perfumes, antibacterial agents, emulsifiers and other surface active agents, propylene glycol, lanolin and wool alcohols were tested in eczema patients over a three-year period. Perfume allergy was detected in 3.6% of the cases, sensitivity to thiomersal in 2%, to sorbic acid in 0.8%, to parabens in only 0.3%, and to wool alcohols in 1.2%. Reactions to emulsifiers were seen over 1% of those tested.
