Threatened pollinator and plant species in megadiverse countries: what we have learned from a synthesis of interactions for Brazil.

Plant-pollinator interactions are essential for the reproduction of most flowering plants and the maintenance of biodiversity. With each new assessment of threat status, new plants and pollinators are included in the list of threatened species. However, the ecological interactions established by threatened plants and pollinators are largely unknown. To support conservation planning for threatened plants and pollinators, we surveyed interactions for the plant and pollinator species listed in the official threatened species lists for Brazil. We found data on plant-pollinator interactions for les

Antioxidant activity of different extracts of Argentinian medicinal plants against arsenic-induced toxicity in renal cells.

Chronic toxicity of arsenic resulting from drinking water is a health problem encountered in humans, especially in South America and Asia, where a correlation between oxidative stress, tumor promotion, and arsenic exposure has been observed. Differential solvent extraction (petroleum ether (PE); dichloromethane (DCM); methanol (OL) and water (W)) was performed to compare the protective (antioxidant) activity of five Argentinian medicinal plants on arsenite-induced oxidative stress in Vero cells, assayed by hydroperoxide measurement. The results were analyzed using ANOVA followed by the LSD Fis

Evaluation of nitric oxide scavenging activity, in vitro and ex vivo, of selected medicinal plants traditionally used in inflammatory diseases.

Steroidal and non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs, despite their various side effects, are in great demand worldwide. Alternatively, herbal formulations provide relief to a large percentage of the population suffering from inflammatory diseases. Therefore, such practices need to be rationalized through a mechanistic approach. Thus, four traditional medicinal plants, namely Ventilago madraspatana Gaertn., Rubia cordifolia Linn., Lantana camara Linn. and Morinda citrifolia Linn. were selected for a study on the inhibition of nitric oxide (NO*), a key mediator in the phenomenon of inflammation,

Reduction of allelochemicals during composting of lignocellulosic biomass: identification and transformation mechanism of allelochemicals.

The terrestrial plant Lantana camara L. is well-known terrestrial plant because of its allelopathic activities, which affect the germination and yield of other crops. The study aimed to convert this plant into a value-added compost product, as its characterization revealed significant amounts of volatile solids and nutrients. The study also sought to investigate the identification and transformation of toxic organic compounds during the in-vessel composting of L. camara using a 550 L rotary drum composter. As per the Central Composite Design - Response Surface Methodology (CCD - RSM), the opti

Brine shrimp toxicity of some plants used as traditional medicines in Kagera Region, north western Tanzania.

Dichloromethane and/or ethanol extracts of 30 plants used as traditional medicines in Bukoba district, northwestern Tanzania were evaluated for brine shrimp toxicity. Among the 50 extracts tested, 32 extracts (64%) showed very low toxicity with LC50 values above 100 microg/ml. Among these 12 (24%) which had LC50 >500 microg/ml can be categorized as being practically non-toxic. Among the remaining extracts 19 (38%) which showed LC50 > 100 < 500 microg/ml are also considered to be non-toxic. Extracts that showed LC50 results between 30-100 microg/ml have been categorized as mildly toxic; these i

Evaluating larvicidal, ovicidal and growth inhibiting activity of five medicinal plant extracts on Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae), the West Nile virus vector.

Mosquitoes, one of the deadliest animals on the planet, cause millions of fatalities each year by transmitting several human illnesses. Synthetic pesticides were previously used to prevent the spread of diseases by mosquitoes, which was effective in protecting humans but caused serious human health problems, environmental damage, and developed mosquito pesticide resistance. This research focuses on exploring new, more effective, safer, and environmentally friendly compounds to improve mosquito vector management. Phytochemicals are possible biological agents for controlling pests and many are t

Odorant receptor Or117 detects camphor to induce floral seeking by the mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Female mosquitoes display distinct, staged, and dynamic resource-seeking behaviors to sustain energy and reproductive demands. Teneral females are attracted to floral odors due to innate energy requirements. During maturation, females develop the competence to take a blood meal, a process expedited following mating and linked to a shift to vertebrate host cue attraction. The change in resource-seeking behaviors is correlated with an overall increase in abundance of chemosensory receptors, with select odorant receptor genes, including odorant receptor Or117, displaying an opposite dynamic expre

Antibacterial activity of the endophytic fungal extracts and synergistic effects of combinations of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli.

The growing threat of antibiotic resistance in bacteria is a critical public health concern. Combining natural compounds with antimicrobial agents is an alternative approach to improve the antibacterial efficacy and safety of these agents. The strategy is to restore the effectiveness of existing antibiotics while minimizing the required concentrations of antibiotics or antimicrobial agents. This study aimed to isolate the endophytic fungi from medicinal plants, including Lantana camara, Orthosiphon aristatus, Mansonia gagei, Terminalia bellirica, Oroxylum indicum, Elaeagnus latifolia, Talinum

Bioavailability of phenolic compounds and redox state of murine liver and kidney as sex-dependent responses to phytoextracts.

BACKGROUND: Plant extracts can be obtained to carry bioactive compounds, useful for prevention and treatment of different illnesses. This also supports the intake of teas as functional beverages. Nonetheless, it is incompletely known whether these extracts can act as effective sources and vehicles de phenolic compounds (phenolics/polyphenols) to reach their targets. OBJECTIVE: To establish whether phytoextract ingestion modified in a sex-dependent manner the phenolic bioavailability and redox response in liver and kidney. METHOD: BALB/C mice ingested for a month 100 mg/Kg/d of extracts (tea-

Ethnobotanical knowledge on botanical repellents employed in the African region against mosquito vectors - A review.

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) represent a huge threat for millions of humans and animals worldwide, since they act as vectors for important parasites and pathogens, including malaria, filariasis and important arboviruses, such as dengue, West Nile and Zika virus. No vaccines or other specific treatments are available against the arboviruses transmitted by mosquitoes, and avoidance of mosquito bites remains the best strategy. African regions are usually hit most whose inhabitants are poor, and the use of repellent plants is the only efficient protection against vectors they have. Ethnobotanic

Impact of invasive weed Parthenium hysterophorus (Asteraceae) on mosquito abundance and plant-feeding behavior in an arboviral endemic region in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Invasive alien species (IAS) are rapidly altering ecosystems, undermining biodiversity, ecosystem processes, and interspecies interactions. Although IAS ecological and economic effects are well recognised, their impact on mosquito populations and the dynamics of infectious diseases is poorly understood. Plant-derived sugars are crucial for mosquito biology, supporting nectarivorous male survival and enhancing female blood feeding. METHODS: In this study, we investigated how Parthenium hysterophorus, a rapidly proliferating invasive weed, shapes the population structure and nectar-

Screening antibiofilm activity of invasive plants growing at the Slope Merapi Mountain, Central Java, against Candida albicans.

BACKGROUND: Candida albicans causes high-mortality candidiasis. Antifungal drug resistance demands the development of virulence factor-targeting drugs, particularly antibiofilm. This study screened the effects of five invasive plants growing in Indonesia (Mimosa pudica, Lantana camara, Acacia mangium, Ageratina riparia, and Mikania micrantha) against C. albicans biofilms. Antifungal activity, antiphospholipase activity, biofilm morphology of C. albicans, and cytotoxic capacity were also evaluated. METHODS: Maceration was used to extract the plants, and the most active extract inhibiting the b
