Monitoring reservoir storage using remote sensing and large language models.

Despite advances in proximal and remote sensing (RS) of surface-water reservoirs, many regions still lack reliable and timely storage records due to sparse or non-public gauging hindering sensor validation. Here we show that validation of synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) water-extent maps against quantitative reservoir storage values extracted from online media information mined with large language models (LLMs) can overcome this limitation. Our innovative framework processes Sentinel-1 SAR imagery in Google Earth Engine to delineate water by sweeping a backscatter threshold T [dB] and a median-

Responsible use of large language models in gastroenterology and hepatology.

Large language models (LLMs) and related generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems are rapidly entering clinical workflows, including in gastroenterology and hepatology, where text-heavy documentation, guideline-driven care, and high-volume patient messaging create a strong demand for decision support and automation. Deployment raises distinctive risks: hallucinations and unsafe recommendations, automation bias, privacy and confidentiality threats, inequitable care, intellectual property and licensing uncertainty, and unclear allocation of responsibility across clinicians, institutions,

Evaluating large language models for domain-specific scholarly metadata classification.

INTRODUCTION: Large language models (LLMs) have been widely applied to text classification; however, their effectiveness in domain-specific scholarly metadata classification remains insufficiently explored. This study investigates the use of open-source LLMs to classify modeling and simulation research articles across three predefined metadata dimensions: Industry, Application Area, and Modeling Method. METHODS: Using a curated dataset of research articles from the AnyLogic research repository, we evaluated models from the Qwen2.5, Llama3.1, Mistral, Ministral, and Gemma3 families. We compare

DataAtlas: automatic generation of data dictionaries using large language models.

OBJECTIVES: Reuse of shared datasets is often limited by incomplete or inconsistent documentation, hindering interpretation and secondary analysis. We developed DataAtlas, an open-source system for automated generation of data dictionaries from tabular datasets. MATERIALS AND METHODS: DataAtlas combines deterministic structural profiling with large language model (LLM)-based semantic inference to generate human-readable descriptions of datasets, tables, and variables. The system integrates column metadata, statistical summaries, and representative sample values to produce concise, context-awa

Alignment of large language models in solving medical ethical dilemmas.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are entering clinical workflows, yet their alignment with medical-ethical principles is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate how LLMs reconcile deontological and utilitarian reasoning in medically adapted "Trolley dilemma" scenarios. METHODS: We tested 14 LLMs, including GPT-o1-preview and DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Llama, using five medically adapted Trolley dilemmas sourced from philosophical and real-world scenarios. Each model generated 10 independent answers per case (overall 700 responses). Responses were forced to "yes" (utilitarian) or "no" (deontological

Large language models detect amplified abstract interpretation in trait anxiety.

Research on the relation of interpretation biases to internalizing symptoms has primarily focused on emotional valence (i.e., negativity bias), leaving other aspects of cognitive processing underexplored. Guided by dual-coding theory (Kousta et al., 2011; Paivio, 1991), we examined how the balance between abstract versus concrete elaboration shapes social interpretations in adults with varying levels of trait anxiety and depressive symptoms. A confirmatory sample of 158 U.S. participants wrote interpretations of 24 ambiguous social images (12 negative, 12 nonnegative) presented with gradually

Generative Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models in Clinical Oncology.

Cancer remains a major global health challenge, and the increasing availability of multimodal biomedical data has created unprecedented opportunities for precision oncology. Recent advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models (LLMs), have enabled new approaches for integrating heterogeneous data sources, including electronic health records, medical imaging, pathology, genomics, and clinical text. However, current studies remain fragmented across specific tasks, cancer types, and model architectures, and a comprehensive synthesis of how generative AI c

Evaluating and Mitigating Relationship Hallucinations in Large Vision-Language Models.

The issue of hallucinations is a prevalent concern in existing Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs). Previous efforts have primarily focused on investigating object hallucinations, which can be easily alleviated by introducing object detectors. However, these efforts neglect hallucinations in inter-object relationships, essential for visual comprehension. In this work, we introduce R-Bench, a novel benchmark specifically designed to evaluate hallucinations in visual relationships. R-Bench includes both image-level questions to assess the existence of relationships and instance-level questions

Large Language Models Estimate Fine-Grained Human Color-Concept Associations.

People reliably associate the meanings of both abstract and concrete words with colors distributed over color space, a phenomenon that influences aspects of visual cognition ranging from object recognition to interpreting information visualizations. Prior research has hypothesized that color-concept associations arise from the cross-modal statistical structure of experience, but it remains unclear whether natural environments contain such structure or whether learning systems can discover it without strong prior constraints. To address these questions, we investigated whether GPT-4, a multimod

Objective quality assessment of neuroradiology reports using large language models.

AIM: Radiology reports are essential for clinical decision-making and must meet standards of clarity, completeness, and diagnostic accuracy. However, quality assessment is often subjective, time-consuming, and dependent on expert reviewers. Large language models (LLMs) offer a promising alternative for automating this process. This study evaluates whether LLMs can objectively and consistently assess the formal and diagnostic quality of neuroradiology reports. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analysed 277 neuroradiology reports, originally authored by 10 radiologists and subsequently evaluated by a d

Parity before scale: governing large language models in global health.

Large language models (LLMs) are proposed as scalable solutions for health workforce gaps in low- and middle-income countries, yet deployment risks deepening inequities. LLM evaluation remains disproportionately centered on English-language resources, and current reporting standards do not operationalize linguistic parity, data sovereignty, or accountability for specific language communities, care pathways, and regulatory arrangements. We propose three minimum governance commitments: parity before scale, requiring pre-specified performance thresholds or non-inferiority margins by language and

Leveraging large language models for rare disease named entity recognition.

Named Entity Recognition (NER) in the rare disease domain poses unique challenges due to limited labeled data, semantic ambiguity between entity types, and long-tail distributions. In this study, we evaluate the capabilities of GPT-4o for rare disease NER under low-resource settings, using a range of prompt-based strategies including zero-shot prompting, few-shot in-context learning, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and task-level fine-tuning. We design a structured prompting framework that encodes domain-specific knowledge and disambiguation rules for four entity types. We further introd

Knowledge-guided contextual gene set analysis with large language models.

MOTIVATION: Gene set analysis (GSA) is a foundational approach for interpreting genomic data of diseases by linking genes to biological processes. However, conventional GSA methods overlook clinical context of the analyses, often generating long lists of enriched pathways with redundant, nonspecific, or irrelevant results. Interpreting these requires extensive, ad-hoc manual effort, reducing both reliability and reproducibility. RESULTS: We introduce cGSA, a novel AI-driven framework that enhances GSA by incorporating context-aware pathway prioritization. cGSA integrates gene cluster detectio

Large Language Models for Oncology Guideline Maintenance: Prospective Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Maintenance of oncology clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) is increasingly challenged by the rapid growth of trial data and therapeutic complexity. While large language models (LLMs) have shown promise in information retrieval, their utility in the rigorous, end-to-end workflow of guideline maintenance remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This case study aimed to systematically evaluate the performance of frontier LLMs in supporting oncology guideline maintenance. We sought to determine their reliability in predicting necessary guideline updates based on new evidence, their accuracy

Standardizing Heterogeneous MRI Series Description Metadata Using Large Language Models.

MRI metadata, particularly free-text series descriptions (SDs) used to identify sequences, are highly heterogeneous due to variable inputs by manufacturers and technologists. This variability poses challenges in correctly identifying series for hanging protocols and dataset curation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of large language models (LLMs) to automatically classify MRI SDs. We analyzed non-contrast brain MRIs performed between 2016 and 2022 at our institution, identifying all unique SDs in the metadata. A practicing neuroradiologist manually classified the SD text
