Lack of association between alpha1-antichymotrypsin polymorphism and late-onset depressive disorder.

Late-onset depressive disorder (LOD) has been thought to be associated with dementia. Recently, it was reported that the position-15 (alanine) polymorphism of the alpha1-antichymotrypsin gene (ACT*A) was a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. We wondered whether the ACT*A allele frequency might be elevated in LOD. ACT genotyping was performed as described by Kamboh et al. (Kamboh, M.I., Sanghera D.K., Ferrell R.E., DeKosky, S.T., 1995. APO* E4-associated Alzheimer's disease risk is modified by alpha1-antichymotrypsin polymorphism. Nature Genetics 10, 486-488) in 153 patients with depressive di

Late-life-onset panic disorder: clinical and demographic characteristics of a patient sample.

Although panic disorder is generally believed to begin in young adulthood, 13 cases of panic disorder with an initial onset after age 60 years have recently been seen at our clinics. Other than the time of life in which the first panic attack occurred, clinical and demographic profiles of these 13 patients were similar to those that have been reported for panic disorder patients whose panic began earlier in life. These findings indicate that panic disorder can affect older adults with no previous history of panic attacks, but further research is needed to determine the clinical and theoretical

Very late-onset EBV-related cutaneous post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder.

The Epstein-Barr Virus-related cutaneous post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (EBV-cPTLD) is an exceptional complication of the immediate post-transplant period, related to the immunosuppression leading to EBV reactivation. EBV-cPTLD presents a heterogeneous dermatological spectrum complicating the diagnosis, hence requiring histology, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridisation (ISH) for confirmation.A woman in her 70s with a 24 year history of renal transplantation presented atypical infiltrated, hyperpigmented lesions on the left arm and leg along with general health deteri

Bringing Attention to a Forgotten Age Group: A Discussion on Late-Onset Bipolar Disorder.

Affecting millions worldwide, bipolar disorder is a chronic condition most commonly diagnosed before the age of 50. However, diagnosing bipolar disorder beyond this age bracket presents unique challenges and is referred to as late-onset bipolar disorder. Due to the limited availability of data, this diagnosis remains complex. Although several efforts have been made to understand the impact of age of onset and neurologic etiologies on the condition, extensive research on this subject is unavailable, which will definitely facilitate enhancing services to this group. We present the case of a 75-y

A Case of Lung Cancer with Brain Metastasis following Late-Onset Bipolar Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of lung cancer with brain metastasis in a patient who developed new late-onset bipolar disorder 2 years previously. BACKGROUND: The typical onset age of bipolar disorder is approximately 20, and the first episode is usually a depressive episode. It is still not clear which age-specific factors contribute to the underlying risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 65-year-old male patient presented with a new-onset manic episode characterized by labile mood, impulsivity, decreased need for sleep, and grandiosity. He was diagnosed with late-onset bipolar disorder after exclu

Frontotemporal Dementia and Late-Onset Bipolar Disorder: The Many Directions of a Busy Road.

It is a common pathway for patients with the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) to be first misdiagnosed with a primary psychiatric disorder, a considerable proportion of them being diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD). Conversely, not rarely patients presenting in late life with a first episode of mania or atypically severe depression are initially considered to have dementia before the diagnosis of late-onset BD is reached. Beyond some shared features that make these conditions particularly prone to confusion, especially in the elderly, the relationship between bvFTD and B

Late onset and high-frequency dominant hearing loss in a family with MYH9 disorder.

MYH9 disorder is a rare autosomal-dominant disorder. We previously reported that it is caused by mutations in the gene for nonmuscle myosin heavy chain IIA (NMMHC-IIA). MYH9 disorder causes congenital macrothrombocytopenia accompanied by progressive sensorineural hearing loss, nephropathy, and cataract. However, there are few reports that describe the audiological features of MYH9 disorder. The objective of this study was to characterize auditory and other phenotypes of patients with MYH9 disorder. We examined nine subjects from one Japanese family. Audiological, ophthalmological, hematologica

High-functioning autism and schizophrenia: a comparison of an early and late onset neurodevelopmental disorder.

Autism and schizophrenia are separate neurodevelopmental disorders that share a number of interpersonal and cognitive deficits. The symptoms of autism first appear during early life while schizophrenic symptoms do not typically appear until adolescence at the earliest. Efforts have been made to characterize the pattern of cognitive function in both disorders, and certain resemblances have become apparent such as deficits in abstract reasoning and the more complex aspects of memory and language. The present study provided a comparison of cognitive function between the two disorders. The autisti

A risk-based classification of late-onset fetal growth disorders according to intrapartum fetal compromise.

OBJECTIVE: Fetal growth restriction is associated with increased perinatal mortality and morbidity. We aimed to evaluate whether the combined assessment of birthweight centile (BWc) and cerebroplacental ratio expressed as multiples of the median (CPR MoM) during the late third trimester can identify distinct risk profiles for intrapartum fetal compromise (IFC) in late-onset fetal growth disorders and to propose a risk-based classification to guide birth management. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 1530 singleton pregnancies with births between 34 and 41 weeks' gestatio

Late-Onset Traumatic Corneal Conjunctival Epithelial Disorders due to Granular Formation After Cosmetic Suture Blepharoplasty.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to report conjunctival granular formation as one of the causative factors of a traumatic corneal conjunctival epithelial disorder after plastic suture blepharoplasty. METHODS: Clinical charts of 7 patients who had visited Ohshima Eye Hospital with a symptomatic corneal epithelial disorder and history of suture blepharoplasty were reviewed. Clinical evidence of conjunctival granular formations was observed in all patients at the tarsal conjunctiva facing to corneal conjunctival traumatic epithelial disorders. The desired outcome was to alleviate the disor

Sleep disorders and late-onset epilepsy of unknown origin: Understanding new trajectories to brain amyloidopathy.

The intertwining between epilepsy, sleep disorders and beta amyloid pathology has been progressively highlighted, as early identification and stratification of patients at high risk of cognitive decline is the need of the hour. Modification of the sleep-wake activity, such as sleep impairment or excessive daytime sleepiness, can critically affect cerebral beta amyloid levels. Both mice models and human studies have demonstrated a substantial increase in the burden of beta amyloid pathology after sleep-deprivation, with potential negative effects partially restored by sleep recovery. The accumu

Maternal birth weight as an indicator of early-onset and late-onset hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: The Japan Environment and Children's study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the association between maternal birth weight (MBW) and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) according to the gestational age when HDP develops. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 77,345 subjects were included in this prospective birth cohort study. The association between MBW and HDP was investigated by a multinomial logistic regression model. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Early-onset HDP (EO-HDP), preterm late-onset HDP (preterm LO-HDP), and term late-onset HDP (term LO-HDP). RESULTS: Lower MBW was associated with higher odds of preterm and term LO-HDP (p-v

White Matter Hyperintensities and Clinical Phenotype in Late-Onset Psychiatric Disorders: A Multidimensional Clinical-Neuroimaging Study.

BACKGROUND: White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) have been implicated in late-onset psychiatric disorders, but their contribution to this clinical phenotype remains insufficiently understood. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional transdiagnostic study of 90 consecutively admitted acute patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD) meeting the predefined inclusion criteria. Patients with a late onset were compared to earlier onset (EO) psychiatric patients. Late onset was defined as the median age of the disorder onset of the sample (≥40 years). Mult

White matter hyperintensities, suicide risk and late-onset affective disorders: an overview of the current literature.

White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) refer to areas of hyperintense signal on T2- or proton density-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging. Although WMHs are a common finding in patients with bipolar disorder (BD), particularly with a later disease onset, some studies report a higher frequency of WMHs only in unipolar affective disorders. We reviewed the literature examining examining both the severity and presence of WMHs in late life and particularly in individuals with late-onset BD (LOBD). Studies investigating white matter lesions in LOBD were systematically retrieved and the reference
