TRANSITIONS IN DRUG USE AMONG HIGH-RISK WOMEN: AN APPLICATION OF LATENT CLASS AND LATENT TRANSITION ANALYSIS.

Latent class analysis (LCA) is a statistical approach to identifying underlying subgroups (i.e. latent classes) of individuals based on their responses to a set of observed categorical variables. Latent transition analysis (LTA) extends this framework to longitudinal data in order to estimate the incidence of transitions over time in latent class membership. This study provides an introduction to LCA and LTA, including the use of grouping variables and covariates, and demonstrates the use of two SAS ® procedures (PROC LCA and PROC LTA) to fit these models. The empirical demonstration involved

Latent class analysis of delusion-proneness: exploring the latent structure of the Peters et al. delusions inventory.

Latent class analysis (LCA) has emerged as the best suitable statistical tool to identify separate dimensions (latent classes) when analyzing dichotomous data; its objective is to categorize people into classes using the observed items and to identify those items that best distinguish between classes. LCA was applied to the Peters et al. delusions inventory, an inventory in a dichotomous format (Yes/No) aimed at investigating proneness to delusion in the general population. The study involved 82 patients diagnosed with a psychotic disorder and 210 well-matched healthy controls from the communi

Exploring Response Patterns to Motivational Messages Supporting Physical Activity: Latent Class Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In mobile health care, text messages play an important role in improving physical activity. Recent studies have developed message banks based on theories, including the behavior change technique (BCT) taxonomy. However, little evidence is available for individual differences (ie, who responds to which BCTs presented in messages), which is crucial for optimizing message delivery. OBJECTIVE: We investigated how individuals perceive messages supporting physical activity and what clusters of individuals are identified by their responses. METHODS: Japanese-speaking adults (n=2859; mea

Early CRPS Is a Heterogeneous Condition: Results From a Latent Class Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a debilitating condition characterised by significant heterogeneity. Early diagnosis is critical, but limited data exists on the condition's early stages. This study aimed to characterise (very) early CRPS patients and explore potential subgroups to enhance understanding of its mechanisms. METHODS: A total of 113 early CRPS patients were recruited, with 89 undergoing physical assessments. Data included demographic information, work-related factors, CRPS history and clinical features, body perception disturbances, quantitative sensory testin

Maternal Incarceration and Health Risk Behaviors Among Adolescents: A Latent Class Analysis.

Most studies on the impact of maternal incarceration on adolescent health risk behaviors have focused on singular, separated behaviors, even though these behaviors often cluster and co-occur. This study used the FFCWS dataset to examine the association between maternal incarceration and the aggregation of health risk behaviors among adolescents. Latent class analysis suggested the four-class model had the optimal model fit. Multinomial logistic regression revealed that the odds of adolescents with maternal incarceration histories being classified into the "high dietary risk behavior," "high in

Phenotypic Classification of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children Using Latent Class Analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is an uncommon but severe hyperinflammatory illness that occurs 2 to 6 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Presentation overlaps with other conditions, and risk factors for severity differ by patient. Characterizing patterns of MIS-C presentation can guide efforts to reduce misclassification, categorize phenotypes, and identify patients at risk for severe outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To characterize phenotypic clusters of MIS-C and identify clusters with increased clinical severity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cohort stud

Patterns of polysubstance use among adults in Malaysia-A latent class analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Polysubstance use is the use of more than one non-prescribed licit or illicit substance at one time. This is a common phenomenon, but little is known about the severity and the various substances used by adults in Malaysia. OBJECTIVE: To determine the pattern of polysubstance use and its associated factors among general adults in Malaysia. METHODOLOGY: This was a secondary data analysis from the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2019), a cross-sectional population survey with a two-stage stratified random sampling design. A total of 10,472 Malaysians aged 18 years and

Early-onset restrictive food intake disorders in children: a latent class analysis.

The two most frequent early-onset restrictive food intake disorders are early-onset anorexia nervosa (EOAN) and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorders (ARFID). Although the core symptoms of EOAN (i.e., fear of gaining weight and disturbed body image) are not present in ARFID, these symptoms are difficult to assess during the initial phase of hospitalisation. Our aim was  to identify restrictive food intake disorder subtypes in children using latent class analysis (LCA) based on the information available at admission to hospital, and to determine the agreement between the subtypes identifie

Bronchial Remodeling-based Latent Class Analysis Predicts Exacerbations in Severe Preschool Wheezers.

Rationale: Children with preschool wheezing represent a very heterogeneous population with wide variability regarding their clinical, inflammatory, obstructive, and/or remodeling patterns. We hypothesized that assessing bronchial remodeling would help clinicians to better characterize severe preschool wheezers. Objectives: The main objective was to identify bronchial remodeling-based latent classes of severe preschool wheezers. Secondary objectives were to compare cross-sectional and longitudinal clinical and biological data between classes and to assess the safety of bronchoscopy. Methods: Th

Comorbidity patterns, family history and breast cancer risk: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Limited evidence exists on how the presence of multiple conditions affects breast cancer (BC) risk. METHODS: We used data from a network hospital-based case-control study conducted in Italy and Switzerland, including 3034 BC cases and 3392 controls. Comorbidity patterns were identified using latent class analysis on a set of specific health conditions/diseases. A multiple logistic regression model was used to derive ORs and the corresponding 95% CIs for BC according to the patterns, adjusting for several covariates. A second model was fitted including an additional effect of FH on

Profiles of subjective health among people living alone: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Living alone has increased globally and especially in Finland where 45% of all households are single occupancy. Epidemiological research has found that living alone a risk factor for a wide range of adversities related to quality of life but the rapidly-changing demographics of people living alone calls for a more detailed investigation of their subjective health status. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional survey sent for a random sample of Finnish residents in single-person households (n = 884), we explored with latent class analysis whether the respondents form different health pro

Latent class analysis of bipolar disorder symptoms and suicidal ideation and behaviors.

UNLABELLED: Individuals with bipolar disorder are at increased risk of dying by suicide compared to healthy controls and those with unipolar depression. Previous studies show that depressive symptoms and mixed episodes of mania and depression are related to suicide. However, most of these studies adopt a variable-centered approach to understanding how specific symptoms relate to suicidal ideation, without addressing how these symptoms and symptom profiles relate to suicidal behaviors. OBJECTIVES: Using latent class analysis, this study adopts a person-centered approach to examine whether subt

Differentiating Individuals Convicted of Sexual Offenses: A Two-Country Latent Class Analysis.

Sexual offenses are often part of a larger criminal career also encompassing nonsexual crimes. However, most sexual offending typologies focus on an individual's most recent sexual offense. We compare data from Belgian and Dutch national conviction cohorts and use latent class analysis to distinguish groups of individuals based on their history of sexual and nonsexual offenses, considering continuity and variety. The resulting classification is compared between individuals convicted of sexual offenses and individuals convicted of nonsexual offenses. Results show that four latent classes can be

Elder abuse victimization patterns: latent class analysis using perpetrators and abusive behaviours.

BACKGROUND: Research on elder abuse has defined it as a multidimensional construct that encompasses a set of different abusive behaviours, victims, perpetrators and settings. The array of possible elder abuse configurations is difficult to capture. This study sought to identify victimization patterns that represent distinct elder abuse configurations based on specific abusive behaviours and on the relationship with the perpetrator; it also sought to determine the association between these latent classes with victims' characteristics. METHOD: Data comes from two elder abuse surveys: a represen

Sexual victimization using latent class analysis: exploring patterns and psycho-behavioral correlates.

Sexual victimization is prevalent in the United States and overrepresented among adolescents. Research typically assesses victimization on a continuum of severity and rarely examines patterns of victimization within an individual. Using latent class analysis, the present study investigated whether meaningful classes of sexual victimization could be found based on the tactic used and severity of sexual behavior. Personal characteristics and psycho-behavioral outcomes were explored as they related to victimization classes. Peer sexual coercion experiences were examined among 657 racially diverse

Latent class cluster analysis to understand heterogeneity in prostate cancer treatment utilities.

BACKGROUND: Men with prostate cancer are often challenged to choose between conservative management and a range of available treatment options each carrying varying risks and benefits. The trade-offs are between an improved life-expectancy with treatment accompanied by important risks such as urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Previous studies of preference elicitation for prostate cancer treatment have found considerable heterogeneity in individuals' preferences for health states given similar treatments and clinical risks. METHODS: Using latent class mixture model (LCA), we firs

Joint analysis of multiple longitudinal outcomes: application of a latent class model.

We address the problem of joint analysis of more than one series of longitudinal measurements. The typical way of approaching this problem is as a joint mixed effects model for the two outcomes. Apart from the large number of parameters needed to specify such a model, perhaps the biggest drawback of this approach is the difficulty in interpreting the results of the model, particularly when the main interest is in the relation between the two longitudinal outcomes. Here we propose an alternative approach to this problem. We use a latent class joint model for the longitudinal outcomes in order t
