Performance of neural networks for localizing moving objects with an artificial lateral line.

Fish are able to sense water flow velocities relative to their body with their mechanoreceptive lateral line organ. This organ consists of an array of flow detectors distributed along the fish body. Using the excitation of these individual detectors, fish can determine the location of nearby moving objects. Inspired by this sensory modality, it is shown here how neural networks can be used to extract an object's location from simulated excitation patterns, as can be measured along arrays of stationary artificial flow velocity sensors. The applicability, performance and robustness with respect

Effects of Hatchery Rearing on the Structure and Function of Salmonid Mechanosensory Systems.

This paper reviews recent studies on the effects of hatchery rearing on the auditory and lateral line systems of salmonid fishes. Major conclusions are that (1) hatchery-reared juveniles exhibit abnormal lateral line morphology (relative to wild-origin conspecifics), suggesting that the hatchery environment affects lateral line structure, perhaps due to differences in the hydrodynamic conditions of hatcheries versus natural rearing environments, and (2) hatchery-reared salmonids have a high proportion of abnormal otoliths, a condition associated with reduced auditory sensitivity and suggestive

Positive taxis and sustained responsiveness to water motions in larval zebrafish.

Larval zebrafish (Danio rerio) have become favored subjects for studying the neural bases of behavior. Here, we report a highly stereotyped response of zebrafish larvae to hydrodynamic stimuli. It involves positive taxis, motion damping and sustained responsiveness to flows derived from local, non-stressful water motions. The response depends on the lateral line and has a high sensitivity to stimulus frequency and strength, sensory background and rearing conditions--also encompassing increased threshold levels of response to parallel input. The results show that zebrafish larvae can use near-f

Segregation of electroreceptive and mechanoreceptive lateral line afferents in the hindbrain of chondrostean fishes.

The anterior lateral line nerve (ALLN) in the chondrostean fishes (sturgeon and paddlefishes) consists of both fibers innervating ampullary electroreceptors and fibers innervating the mechanoreceptive neuromasts of the cephalic lateral line system. The fibers of the posterior lateral line nerve (PLLN) innervate only mechanoreceptive neuromasts on the body trunk. The ALLN enters the medulla via dorsal and ventral roots; the dorsal root projects to the dorsal octavolateralis nucleus (DON), whereas the ventral root and the PLLN project principally to the medial octavolateralis nucleus (MON). Lateral line - evoked potentials (LLEPs): an effective tool for investigating ototoxicity.

Investigations of ototoxicity using the zebrafish lateral line system have focused on the morphology of neuromast sensory hair cells using vital dyes. As a complement to this approach, we demonstrate the utility of lateral line - evoked potentials (LLEPs). The LLEPs were acquired with a modified auditory evoked potentials physiological rig, using a dipole stimulus that was presented at a rate of 50 Hz. Fish were subjected to 0.002% and 0.003% gentamicin solution. Differences in LLEP thresholds were observed in treated versus control animals. These data indicate that LLEPs are an effective phys

Larval Zebrafish Lateral Line as a Model for Acoustic Trauma.

Excessive noise exposure damages sensory hair cells, leading to permanent hearing loss. Zebrafish are a highly tractable model that have advanced our understanding of drug-induced hair cell death, yet no comparable model exists for noise exposure research. We demonstrate the utility of zebrafish as model to increase understanding of hair cell damage from acoustic trauma and develop protective therapies. We created an acoustic trauma system using underwater cavitation to stimulate lateral line hair cells. We found that acoustic stimulation resulted in exposure time- and intensity-dependent late

Dilatation of the hemiazygos system on plain films of the chest.

The enlargement of the hemiazygos system and the superior intercostal vein as a collateral pathway in cases of obstruction of the superior or the inferior vena cava is recognizable on the frontal and lateral plain chest films. It appears in frontal radiographs as an additional line parallel to the left paraspinal line with a bulging at the level or superiorly to the aortic knob and continuing with the shadow of the left brachiocephalic vessels. In the lateral chest view it is evident as an inhomogeneous soft tissue density posteriorly to the lower third of the trachea.

Distribution and morphological characteristics of efferent neurons innervating end organs in the ear and lateral line of the European eel.

Neurons that provide the efferent innervation to the labyrinthine and lateral line sense organs of the eel were located by applying horseradish peroxidase to branches of the appropriate cranial nerves. Retrogradely labeled neurons were found in a single median column, the octavolateralis efferent nucleus (OEN), located immediately rostral to and overlapping with the facial nucleus of the branchiomotor column. We estimate that on each side of the brain the efferent nucleus contains about 60-70 neurons, most of which supply the ear and the lateral line system of the head. Most neurons (approxima

Formation of new sensory cells in deafferented tuberous organs of the gymnotid fish Eigenmannia virescens.

The cutaneous electroreceptor "tuberous organs" of the lateral line system of Eigenmannia virescens were studied at light and electron microscopic levels with immunohistochemical and autoradiographic techniques after sectioning of the posterior branch of the lateral line nerve. After deafferentation total degeneration of the sensory cells was observed. The accessory cells of the basal platform, however, remain intact and undergo a process of differentiation. The cytoplasms and nuclei of these cells increase in volume, and the nuclei incorporate tritiated thymidine. In control tuberous organs w

Acute effectiveness and safety of the different mitral isthmus lines in the treatment of perimitral flutter with radiofrequency ablation.

OBJECTIVE: Ablating perimitral flutter (PMF) is challenging mainly because of epicardial structures such as the Bachmann bundle, the coronary sinus (CS) system, and the ligament of Marshall. There is still no consensus on which ablation strategy is the most effective. This study evaluates the acute effectiveness and safety of 3 different mitral isthmus (MI) ablation line types in treating PMF with radiofrequency ablation. METHODS: This retrospective analysis reviewed 102 cases of definitively diagnosed PMF from 5131 electrophysiological procedures performed between January 2018 and April 2024

Physiology of afferent neurons in larval zebrafish provides a functional framework for lateral line somatotopy.

Fishes rely on the neuromasts of their lateral line system to detect water flow during behaviors such as predator avoidance and prey localization. Although the pattern of neuromast development has been a topic of detailed research, we still do not understand the functional consequences of its organization. Previous work has demonstrated somatotopy in the posterior lateral line, whereby afferent neurons that contact more caudal neuromasts project more dorsally in the hindbrain than those that contact more rostral neuromasts (Gompel N, Dambly-Chaudiere C, Ghysen A. Genetic compensation highlights the importance of neural cell adhesion molecule Ncam1 paralogs in balancing signaling pathways during zebrafish lateral line development.

The neural cell adhesion molecule NCAM1 is essential for neuronal development and enables organized cell migration, axon growth, and fasciculation. As a result of genome duplication in zebrafish, the paralogs Ncam1a and Ncam1b arose. Our previously published findings using morpholino knockdown experiments demonstrated the essential role of Ncam1b in the development of the zebrafish lateral line system, a mechanosensory organ critical for detecting water movements. ncam1b morphants exhibited severe defects, including impaired primordium migration, disrupted proneuromast deposition, and reduced

Modified Fletcher's 3-channel brachytherapy system with vaginal line source loading versus uterine tandem and vaginal cylinder system in Stage IIIA cervical cancer.

PURPOSE: The uterine tandem with open-ended vaginal cylinder is the most commonly used brachytherapy system for Federation Internationale de Gynecologie et d'Obstetrique (FIGO) Stage IIIA cervix cancer at the National Cancer Centre, Singapore. Without the 3-channel ovoid system, the dose to the parametrium is often compromised. In this study, a vaginal cylinder that could potentially be incorporated with the 3-channel system was developed, hence addressing the problem of treating both the vaginal disease extension and the parametrium. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A hollow cylinder of 3 cm in diamet

Exploring sample cross-contamination in fish epidermal mucus.

Cross-contamination of epidermal mucus was assessed at three sampling locations on the bodies of Pacific halibut Hippoglossus stenolepis by inducing contact between fish coated with labelled synthetic mucus and non-treated fish. Results indicate a positive relationship between sampling site exposure and sample contamination and that mucous sample cross-contamination can be mitigated by sampling in a location protected from external contact.

Removal of eyes in early larval stages alters the response of the clawed toad, Xenopus laevis, to surface waves.

The clawed toad, Xenopus laevis, responds to surface waves with a very accurate orienting reaction towards the source of the wave. The importance of visual experience during larval development for this orienting reaction guided by the lateral line was investigated by testing the responses in postmetamorphic animals deprived of vision from an early larval stage by enucleation or rearing in darkness. Control animals were enucleated after metamorphosis. The results show that the orienting response in animals enucleated as larvae is less accurate; the slope of the regression of the turning angle o

The flow fields involved in hydrodynamic imaging by blind Mexican cave fish (Astyanax fasciatus). Part I: open water and heading towards a wall.

Blind Mexican cave fish (Astyanax fasciatus) sense the presence of nearby objects by sensing changes in the water flow around their body. The information available to the fish using this hydrodynamic imaging ability depends on the properties of the flow field it generates while gliding and how this flow field is altered by the presence of objects. Here, we used particle image velocimetry to measure the flow fields around gliding blind cave fish as they moved through open water and when heading towards a wall. These measurements, combined with computational fluid dynamics models, were used to e

Lateral line, otic and epibranchial placodes: developmental and evolutionary links?

Two embryonic cell populations, the neural crest and cranial ectodermal placodes, between them give rise to many of the unique characters of vertebrates. Neurogenic placode derivatives are vital for sensing both external and internal stimuli. In this speculative review, we discuss potential developmental and evolutionary relationships between two placode series that are usually considered to be entirely independent: lateral line placodes, which form the mechanosensory and electroreceptive hair cells of the anamniote lateral line system as well as their afferent neurons, and epibranchial placod

Navigation-guided opening of the internal auditory canal via the retrosigmoid route for acoustic neuroma surgery: cadaveric, radiological, and preliminary clinical study.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the usefulness of a microscope-based navigational system (Multi Koordinaten Manipulator; Zeiss, Oberkochen, Germany) for removal of the posterior wall of the internal auditory canal (IAC) via the retrosigmoid route. METHODS: A cadaveric study was performed to assess the navigational localization error for the retrosigmoid approach to the IAC. Computed tomographic findings for 47 acoustic neuroma cases were divided into three groups, on the basis of the relationship between the labyrinth and the sigmoid-fundus line (medial, on the line, or lateral). Furthermore, the

Microanatomy of the Temporal Division of the Facial Nerve in the Periorbital Region Applied to Minimally Invasive Keyhole Approaches.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive keyhole approaches to the anterior skull base and circle of Willis require small incisions near distal branches of the temporal division (TD) of the facial nerve. Few studies have focused on planning the incision to avoid the TD branches and maximize exposure in these approaches. This study aimed to define a safe zone away from the TD branches for skin incision during minimally invasive keyhole approaches using reliable and practical skin landmarks. METHODS: In 5 cadaveric heads (10 sides), a Cartesian system was established with the orbitomeatal line connecting
