The tendency to interpret nonverbal social signals as hostile in intention is associated with aggressive responding, poor social functioning and mental illness, and can already be observed in childhood. To investigate the neural correlates of such hostile attributions of social intention, we performed a functional magnetic imaging study in 10-18 year old children and adolescents. Fifty healthy participants rated videos of laughter, which they were told to imagine as being directed towards them, as friendly versus hostile in social intention. Hostile intention ratings were associated with neura

AIMS: Laughter has been used for centuries to alleviate pain in morbid conditions. It was not until 1976 that scientists thought about laughter as a form of therapy that can modulate hormonal and immunological parameters that affect the outcome of many serious diseases. Moreover, laughter therapy was shown to be beneficial in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by delaying the onset of many diabetic complications. Laughter is also described to influence the cardiovascular and endothelial functions and thus may protect against diabetic cardiovascular complications. In this review, we outline the di

OBJECTIVE: To review the beneficial and harmful effects of laughter.
DESIGN: Narrative synthesis.
DATA SOURCES AND REVIEW METHODS: We searched Medline (1946 to June 2013) and Embase (1974 to June 2013) for reports of benefits or harms from laughter in humans, and counted the number of papers in each category.
RESULTS: Benefits of laughter include reduced anger, anxiety, depression, and stress; reduced tension (psychological and cardiovascular); increased pain threshold; reduced risk of myocardial infarction (presumably requiring hearty laughter); improved lung function; increased energy exp

Laryngeal muscle electromyography (EMG) and measures of the behavior of the respiratory system have been made during spontaneous laughter in two groups of subjects. The smaller group also had a direct measure of tracheal pressure during this behavior. Laryngeal adductors such as the thyroarytenoid (TA) and lateral cricoarytenoid (LCA) exhibited brief high-amplitude bursts of activity, at a rate of approximately 5 Hz, which were usually associated on a 1 : 1 basis with the sound bursts (ha ha ha) of laughter. The laryngeal abductor, posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA), also showed bursts of activity

Laughter after viewing a humorous video "Modern Times" decreased Japanese cedar pollen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) and IgG4 levels, while it enhanced Japanese cedar pollen-specific IgA levels in tears of patients with atopic keratoconjunctivitis, while viewing a nonhumorous weather information video did not do so. Laughter after viewing "Modern Times" also decreased nerve growth factor levels without affecting neurotrophin-3 levels in tears of those patients, while viewing a weather information video did not. These results indicate that laughter decreased allergen-specific IgE and IgG4 pro

Two cases of acoustic schwannoma in a 48-year-old woman and 18-year-old male are reported. Both patients presented with an extremely unusual symptom of pathological laughter as a principal presenting symptom. Complete resection of the tumour via a retrosigmoid route resulted in an immediate resolution of pathological laughter.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neurogenetic condition marked by frequent smiling and laughter. Early descriptions portrayed these expressions as inappropriate or disconnected from context, but recent work has questioned this view. This study examined the emotional responses of children with AS to auditory, tactile, visual, and social stimuli and compared them to typically developing (TD) children and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Using Bayesian mixed-effects models, we analyzed behavioral ratings and Facial Action Coding System (FACS) data. Children with AS showed more frequent po

Patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) can display socially inappropriate behaviors as part of their multiform tic phenomenology. Pathological laughter (PL), defined as the presence of episodic and contextually inappropriate outbursts of laughter, has been detailed as a symptom of various psychiatric and neurological conditions. We present a case series of eight subjects diagnosed with GTS who reported PL as part of their tic repertoire. All subjects experienced PL as a simple phonic tic, accompanied by characteristic premonitory urges and significant impairment in social interacti

PURPOSE: Dry eye disease is a common condition associated with mental health. Daily simulated laughter for eight weeks has been shown to alleviate symptoms and signs of dry eye disease. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the immediate effects of laughter on tear film lipid layer thickness and tear meniscus height.
METHODS: This was a single-center, self-controlled before-after trial. Participants aged 18 to 45 years with ocular surface disease index scores above 13 and non-invasive tear film break-up time below 8 s were included in the dry eye dise

Laughter has a major role in daily social interactions; consequently, its biologic bases have been previously studied. Nevertheless, its cerebral representation remains unclear. The most accepted hypothesis has postulated that laughter has 2 components: mirth, related to the temporal and frontal neocortical areas, and motor aspect, related to the limbic system and brainstem. Furthermore, in prior studies, laughter has been elicited during electric stimulation with depth electrodes in the supplementary motor area and the cingulum. This Video 1 reports resection of a right superior frontal gyrus

Gelotophobia, the fear of being laughed at, is characterized by heightened sensitivity to ridicule and a tendency to perceive laughter in social situations as mocking. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) acquires brain functional connectivity while the individual remains at rest, without engaging in specific tasks. Recent studies have investigated task-based fMRI and white matter in gelotophobes; however, the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in this group remains unclear. This study aimed to examine differences in rsFC between gelotophobes and non-gelotoph

Research on socially aware systems requires fine-grained knowledge of the mechanisms of persuasion in order to promote civic knowledge and aware political participation. Within humor studies, political parody is generally considered a simple pleasant weapon for political evaluation, currently explained by referring to the so called "just a joke effect" (Nabi et al., 2007). Indeed the funny side of parody can induce positive emotions, but it also includes a discrediting act that sometimes produces a "bitter laughter." The present study aims to understand the role played by negative and moral em

Extent of cerebellar involvement in cognition and emotion is still a topic of ongoing research. In particular, the cerebellar role in humor processing and control of laughter is not well known. A hypermetric dysregulation of affective behavior has been assumed in cerebellar damage. Thus, we aimed at investigating humor comprehension and appreciation as well as the expression of laughter in 21 patients in the acute or subacute state after stroke restricted to the cerebellum, and in the same number of matched healthy control subjects. Patients with acute and subacute cerebellar damage showed pre

In the cerebellar type of multiple system atrophy (MSA-C), the burden of pathological changes involves the cerebellum and its associated brainstem structures in the basis pontis and the inferior olivary nucleus, and as a result, the clinical phenotype is dominated early on by the cerebellar dysfunction. We report our clinical and post mortem findings in a patient with MSA-C who exhibited pathological laughter in the absence of any congruent changes of mood. A review of the clinical notes of 27 other patients with MSA-C revealed a problem with pathological laughter, or crying, or both in 9 more

OBJECTIVES: Cataplexy, when unequivocally present together with excessive daytime sleepiness, is diagnostic for narcolepsy. Unfortunately, it is difficult to induce cataplexy during consultation. In this study we tried to assess presumed subclinical expressions of cataplexy using neurophysiological tests.
METHODS: In this controlled explorative study, we studied 14 patients with a clear history of cataplexy and 12 matched controls using standard H-reflex, H/M ratios, audiospinal reflex, H-reflexes modulated by emotions and startle reflexes.
RESULTS: H-reflexes were attenuated during laughter

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by negatively biased perception of social cues and deficits in emotion regulation. While negatively biased perception is thought to maintain social anxiety, emotion regulation represents an ability necessary to overcome both biased perception and social anxiety. Here, we used laughter as a social threat in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study to identify cerebral mediators linking SAD with attention and interpretation biases and their modification through cognitive emotion regulation in the form of reappraisal. We found that reappr

BACKGROUND: Cancer and its treatments affect patients' physical and psychological well-being. Laughter therapy is a non-pharmacological intervention with potential to relieve these effects.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of laughter therapy in patients with cancer.
METHODS: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted to evaluate laughter therapy in cancer patients. Searches were performed in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.gov through September 1 of 2025. In pairs, the authors independently performed study selection, data extraction, and risk of

Emotional lability and pathologic laughter and crying (PLC) have been frequently mentioned in patients with locked-in syndrome (LIS) without giving any detail about the clinical characteristics and possible consequences in terms of symptoms burden, functional impact, and recovery. In the present report, we describe our approach and management of 4 patients with LIS and PLC. PLC caused discomfort to the patients and hindered the different components of their rehabilitation program, limiting communication, the execution of swallowing testing and training, and the improvement of any residual moto
