OBJECTIVE: To describe what is to our knowledge the first reported case of lead poisoning from ingested fishing sinkers in an 8-year-old boy for whom whole bowel irrigation and colonoscopy were required.
LITERATURE REVIEW: All relevant literature on plumbism from other swallowed foreign bodies, including curtain weights, bullets, shot, and other unusual sources, is reviewed and discussed.
CONCLUSIONS: Lead screening is advocated in any child presenting with a history of pica or foreign-body ingestion, especially presentations involving abdominal pain, weight loss, and emesis. Conservative ma

To understand how lead (Pb2+) and other metals and chelating agents effect living cells, behavioral experiments in the marine ciliate Paramecium calkinsi were carried out. The duration of Backward Swimming Behavior (BSB) of Paramecium was partially reduced when cells were exposed to 100 microM of Ni2+, CD2+ and Co2+. In contrast, Pb2+ increased Paramecium BSB in a dose-dependent manner. Thus, 1, 10, 20, 50 and 100 microM of Pb2+ increased the duration of BSB by 20.4, 83.9, 143.2, 163.2 and 185.2%, respectively. One of the main targets of lead poisoning is the kidney. Chronic poisoning can lead to kidney failure, and acute poisoning to tubulopathy with Toni-Debré-Fanconi syndrome. The primum movens of this tubulopathy is a distortion of mitochondrial energetic metabolism. We studied 27 children presenting with non symptomatic poisoning. Serum creatinine levels were normal. There was neither proteinuria nor glycosuria and only one child presented with hyperaminoaciduria. One third already presented with signs of tubulopathy, as shown by an increase in beta 2 microglobinuria in 36.5% of the cases studie

Eleven patients from the West Bank village of Es-Sawiyeh were admitted with lead poisoning to two Jerusalem hospitals between November 1982 and January 1983. They all belonged to several households of a single large family. Colicky abdominal pains were present in five patients, weakness in four, behavioral changes ranging from irritability to frank psychosis in four, and paralysis in one. Anemia of various degrees was seen in all patients. Basophilic stippling and reticulocytosis were encountered in all patients with moderate to severe anemia. Therapy with edetate disodium calcium and penicill

Hematologic abnormalities in childhood lead poisoning may be due, in part, to the presence of other disorders, such as iron deficiency or thalassemia minor. In order to reassess increased lead burden as a cause of microcytic anemia, we studied 58 children with class III or IV lead poisoning, normal iron stores, and no inherited hemoglobinopathy. Anemia occurred in 12% and microcytosis in 21% of these children. The combination of anemia and microcytosis was found in only one of 58 patients (2%). When only children with class IV lead poisoning were studied, the occurrence of microcytosis increas

BACKGROUND: The city of Port Pirie in South Australia has been a world leading centre for lead and zinc smelting and processing since 1889 that continues to cause contamination of its environment and resident population. This study quantifies the effect of lead and SO2 emissions from Nyrstar Port Pirie Pty Ltd's smelter on blood lead and respiratory health outcomes, respectively, and establishes what air quality values are required to better protect human health.
METHOD: Blood lead and emergency department presentation data collected by South Australia Health (SA Health) and lead in air and S

The effect of iron depletion on blood lead levels was studied in a group of 558 schoolchildren aged 10 to 18 residing in two West Bank Arab villages with a high prevalence of excessive lead exposure and clinical lead poisoning. Thirty percent of the subjects studied had whole-blood lead levels greater than 30 micrograms/dl, and 45% had whole-blood zinc erythrocyte protoporphyrin greater than 50 micrograms/dl. The percentage of abnormal blood lead values in subjects with normal serum ferritin and transferrin saturation (31%) was similar to that in subjects with one (28%) or two (25%) abnormal i

Five cases of acute lead poisoning resulted from the self-injection of lead and opium pills which were crushed, heated and suspended in water. Two of the five patients died of illnesses in which hepatic failure and reversible acute tubular necrosis were prominent features. One of these two had a severe neuropathy, with flaccid quadriplegia and respiratory paralysis. The other three patients had relatively minor symptoms but unequivocal biochemical evidence of lead toxicity. Autopsy changes included hepatic degeneration with inclusion bodies, regenerating renal tubular epithelium and wasting of

Lead poisoning is a significant health concern, impacting multiple organs in the body, including the musculoskeletal system. While some studies suggest a link between lead exposure and reduced Bone Mineral Density (BMD), others report no significant relationship. This study aims to address this research gap by comparing the prevalence of osteoporosis and BMD in patients with lead poisoning to that of healthy individuals. In this study, 35 lead poisoning patients admitted to the poisoning departments of Valiasr Hospital in Birjand and Imam Reza Hospital in Mashhad were compared with 35 age- and

The presented case demonstrates that acute lead poisoning may occur due to just short-term exposure to a mixture of lead-containing dust and ammunition. Such exposure may result in high blood lead levels persisting for years in the absence of any symptoms. A middle-aged male with a history of an approximately 7-day cleanup of an old recreational firing range with large ammunition and dust deposits presented to an emergency department with abdominal pain, dyspnea, fatigue and impaired cognitive function. Given his occupational history, specific tests were performed that showed high lead concent

Background The aim of the current study was to evaluate the efficacy of D-penicillamine in the treatment of lead poisoning mainly in the outpatient setting. Methods In a case series study performed during the recent epidemic of lead poisoning in Iran, lead-poisoned patients referring to our outpatient clinic were treated with 250-mg D-penicillamine capsules administered every 6 h for 5 or 10 days based on availability of the medication. They were recommended to re-check blood lead level (BLL) 4 weeks after cessation of the treatment and refer to our clinic again. Results In 63 patients with le

A young Arab woman was diagnosed with severe lead poisoning in the early 80's. Detailed epidemiologic studies revealed many additional cases of lead poisoning in the rural population south of Nablus and a population survey conducted among schoolchildren revealed increased blood lead levels in 30% of the children. The source of poisoning was contamination from home-made flour by lead fillings used to secure the housing of the driveshaft to the millstone. Of the 146 village mills surveyed, lead concentrations in freshly ground flour exceeding 1.5 ppm were found in 8% of the mills. Following our

Lead-induced mortality appears to have been a major factor in the decline of the California condor (Gymnogyps californianus). We orally dosed turkey vultures (Cathartes aura) with BB-sized lead shot from January 1988 through July 1988 to determine physiologic response (delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase inhibition, erythrocyte protoporphyrin levels, anemia), diagnostic tissue lead concentrations (blood, liver, and kidney), and comparative sensitivity of this species. Two turkey vultures died and two became so intoxicated they were euthanized. Overall, responses of measured parameters were c

To determine the incidence of renal functional abnormalities after lead poisoning, we evaluated the parameters of renal tubular function in 134 children and young adults, 8-13 years after chelation therapy for severe lead poisoning. There was no evidence of hypertension or reduced kidney function as assessed by serum creatinine (Cr) concentrations. Urinary alpha-amino nitrogen (Uaan) concentrations were significantly increased compared with 19 healthy age-matched controls. Ninety-four children (70%) had aminoaciduria (Uaan/Cr >0.23). Urinary glucose excretion was also significantly higher than

Information pertaining to 294 cases of bovine lead poisoning that occurred during the 15-year period from 1968 to 1982 was collected from the toxicology laboratory records at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Lead poisoning was seen more often in younger cattle, with 51.9% of the cases reported in animals 6-months of age or less. A statistically significant seasonal incidence was seen (p less than 0.0001) with 60.9% of the cases occurring from May to August. Lead poisoning was more common in dairy breeds than beef breeds. The relative rates in the daily and beef breeds per 1,000 catt

The detection of progressive sideroblastic anaemia over a period of weeks in a 58 year old woman led to the diagnosis of chronic lead poisoning confirmed by serum lead levels of 2 mg/l. The alimentary origin of the lead poisoning was proved by the finding of high lead levels in the wine which the patient drank excessively. An inquiry at the wine merchant's showed that the local wine was not responsible but that the foreign wine used to fortify the blend had been contaminated. Chronic lead poisoning in alcoholics which has already been widely reported and the demonstration of abnormally high le
