Practical toxicologic diagnosis.

Strychnine toxicosis is characterized by inducible tetanic seizures and metaldehyde poisoning by fine fasciculations progressing to generalized tremors and seizures. Intoxication with 1080 causes seizures, random running movements, vomiting, defecation, urination, acidosis and hyperglycemia. Intoxication with rodenticides causing coagulopathy is characterized by hemorrhage into body cavities but not necessarily external hemorrhage. Anticholinesterase insecticides cause salivation, urination and defecation, while chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides cause CNS disturbances. Ethylene glycol intox

Environmental and Health Impacts of Air Pollution: A Review.

One of our era's greatest scourges is air pollution, on account not only of its impact on climate change but also its impact on public and individual health due to increasing morbidity and mortality. There are many pollutants that are major factors in disease in humans. Among them, Particulate Matter (PM), particles of variable but very small diameter, penetrate the respiratory system via inhalation, causing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, reproductive and central nervous system dysfunctions, and cancer. Despite the fact that ozone in the stratosphere plays a protective role against u

Low-level Chronic Lead Exposure Impairs Neural Control of Blood Pressure and Heart Rate in Rats.

Lead (Pb) induces adverse effects when it chronically accumulates in the body, including effects on the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Wistar rats were exposed to lead acetate for 30 days (first dose 4 µg/100 g followed by 0.05 µg/100 g/day, i.m.) to investigate the cardiovascular system impact on the autonomic control. The femoral artery and vein were catheterised to perform hemodynamic evaluations in awake rats: heart rate variability (HRV), baroreflex sensitivity, cardiopulmonary reflex and hemodynamic responses to vagal and sympathetic pharmacological blockade. Rats exposed to Pb exhi

[Poisoning caused by marine biotoxins].

This paper presents a short summary of the knowledge on marine biotoxins. As toxins are known for their acute effects, they have been classified here according to the effects they cause in acute human poisoning incidents. Toxins may thus be distinguished into those that affect the nervous system (paralytic and other neurotoxins), memory (amnesic poisons), and the digestive system (diarrhetic toxins). Furthermore, newly emerging toxins, such as ciguatoxins or shark toxins, and factors that lead to the introduction of toxins in new areas, are presented. Relevant suggestions for further reading a

Lead exposure of rats during and after pregnancy induces anti-myelin proteolytic activity: a potential mechanism for lead-induced neurotoxicity.

Toxic effects of lead (Pb) are principally manifested in the central nervous system (CNS) and a mounting body of evidence indicates that excessive chronic exposure to Pb participates in the pathological processes of numerous neurodegenerative disorders in humans. In this study we evaluated whether the prolonged pre- and postnatal exposure of rat pups to lead, administrated through ingestion in drinking water, as a typical environmental exposure, can determine alterations of the protein pattern of CNS myelin and the induction of myelin-associated proteinases. Pregnant dams were given distilled w

Nonsynergic effect of ethanol and lead on heme metabolism in rats.

The heme biosynthetic pathway is a metabolic target of alcohol and lead poisoning. To analyze the interdependence of both xenobiotics on porphyrin metabolism, male Wistar rats (n=47) were divided into four groups and were fed Lieber-DeCarli semiliquid control or alcoholic diets containing or not containing lead acetate (160 mg/liter) for 8 weeks. After this period, hematocrit values and porphyrin concentration in liver and urine were similar in all groups, indicating that the goal of inducing only mild chronic intoxication was achieved. Compared with the control group, rats poisoned only with

[Ingested lead cartridges cause trouble].

BACKGROUND: Lead poisoning is rare. Intake of lead shots may cause damage of the bone marrow, the nervous system, the liver, the kidneys and the endocrine organs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present two patients who had taken approximately 120 grams of lead shots. They developed asthenia, nausea and abdominal pain. We tried to remove the lead shots with fluids, laxatives and colonoscopy, but ultimately surgical intervention had to be performed. The patients were also treated with dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION: Although DMSA treatment is associated with a significan

Could Lifetime Lead Exposure Play a Role in Limbic-predominant Age-related TDP-43 Encephalopathy (LATE)?

Limbic-predominant Age-related TDP-43 Encephalopathy (LATE) is a disease in which the clinical presentation mimics that of Alzheimer's disease. TDP-43 proteinopathy associated with LATE has been identified in more than 20% of autopsies of community-dwelling adults over the age of 80. It is believed to contribute significantly toward tau-negative dementia. Heavy metals such as lead has also been linked to TDP-43 proteinopathy. In particular, lead triggers TDP-43 accumulation and disrupts TDP-43 homeostasis. However, the specific relationship between LATE and lead remains unknown. Before leaded

Toxicological properties of lead.

The pathological effects of lead on the renal, nervous, reproductive, endocrine, and immune systems have been reviewed. Emphasis is placed on reported subclinical effects due to chronic, low-level lead exposure. The crucial issue of whether subtle behavioral, intellectual, and developmental impairment occurs in young children, as a result of lead-induced CNS damage is discussed in detail. This issue remains unresolved. Further studies are needed in order to determine the long-term health effects of continuous, low-level lead exposure.

Lead encephalopathy presenting as status epilepticus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Lead encephalopathy, while thankfully rare, is a devastating and potentially fatal consequence of lead intoxication. Owing to successful public health measures, severe lead toxicity is not often encountered by most practicing physicians in the United States, making both its recognition and management challenging. A case study of a 4-year-old female presenting in refractory status epilepticus, found to have severe microcytic anemia and lead level > 100 mcg/dL. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 4-year-old girl who presented with refractory seizures, severe microcytic anemia,

S100β in heavy metal-related child attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in an informal e-waste recycling area.

Exposure to lead even at low levels correlates with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, lead-contaminated environments are often contaminated with other heavy metals that could exacerbate lead-induced ADHD. We conducted this study to evaluate the relationship between multiple heavy metals and child behaviors, and the involvement of S100 calcium-binding protein β (S100β) expression in child ADHD in Guiyu, an internationally-known e-waste contaminated recycling town. Two hundred and forty kindergarten children, 3- to 7-years of age, who lived in Guiyu, were recruited for th

Lead, reproduction and development.

Lead remains a significant occupational health and public health problem. Excessive lead exposure, not only to men exposed at work, but also from lead based paint in older housing and from soil, still persists in the community. From the perspective of human reproduction, lead is known to cause a number of adverse outcomes in both men and women. Reported effects in men include reduced libido, effects on spermatogenesis (reduced motility and numbers, increased normal morphology), chromosomal damage, infertility, abnormal prostatic function and changes in serum testosterone. Most of these effects

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and lead: A systematic update.

Heavy metals are considered to be among the leading environmental factors that trigger amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). However, no convincing biopathological mechanism and therapeutic clinical implication of such metals in ALS pathogenesis have been established. This is partly attributable to the technical and scientific difficulties in demonstrating a direct and causative role of heavy metals in the onset of ALS in patients. However, a body of epidemiological, clinical and experimental evidences suggest that lead (Pb), more than other metals, could actually play a major role in the onset

[One case of respiratory failure caused by occupational acute acetonitrile poisoning].

This article analyzes the treatment process of a patient with respiratory failure caused by occupational acute acetonitrile poisoning. Due to operational errors, the patient's body was sprayed with a large amount of acetonitrile liquid, leading to the absorption of acetonitrile through the skin and resulting in acute poisoning. The clinical manifestations were nervous system and respiratory system damage, accompanied by severe lactic acidosis. After active comprehensive treatments such as tracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) , and glucocortic

Effect of the delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase gene polymorphism on renal and neurobehavioral function in workers exposed to lead in China.

Effects of delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) polymorphisms on the renal and neurobehavioral functions were investigated in Chinese workers from a storage battery plant exposed to inorganic lead. Blood and urine were collected from each worker to determine the ALAD genotypes, blood lead levels (PbB), urinary beta2-MG and urinary NAG activity. The World Health Organization Neurobehavioral Core Test Battery (WHO-NCTB) was used. Of the 135 lead workers tested for ALAD genotype, 126 were ALAD1-1, 9 were ALAD1-2 but none were ALAD2-2. The gene frequencies of ALADl-1 and ALADl-2 were 93.33

Comparison of patella lead with blood lead and tibia lead and their associations with neurobehavioral test scores.

OBJECTIVE: Lead exposure in adults is associated with worse cognitive function in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Previous studies have mainly examined relations with blood lead or cortical bone lead; few have examined trabecular bone lead. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of the relations of patella lead and other lead biomarkers with measures of neurobehavioral and peripheral nervous system function in 652 lead workers. RESULTS: Patella lead was found to be associated with worse performance on seven of 19 tests of manual dexterity, sensory vibration threshold, and

Neonatal lead exposure potentiates sickness behavior induced by Listeria monocytogenes infection of mice.

The effects of lead (Pb) administration on infection-induced decreases in water intake, food intake, and body weight gain have been assessed as manifestations of sickness behavior using a BALB/c mouse model. Pb acetate (0.5 mM) was administered via drinking water to dams from Day 0 postpartum to weaning and to mouse pups after weaning until sacrifice. At 22 days after birth, young mice were infected with Listeria monocytogenes. Mice with blood Pb levels of less than 25 microg/dl exhibited enhanced and prolonged sickness behavior compared to mice not exposed to Pb. With this mouse model, after

Electrophysiology and nerve biopsy in men exposed to lead.

ABSTRACT Twenty lead-exposed men were selected on the basis of a maximum level of lead in the blood of 70-140 μg/100 ml within the past year. There was no clinical evidence of neuropathy attributable to lead and haemoglobin levels were normal. In individuals, maximum motor and sensory conduction and the amplitude of the evoked potentials were normal or borderline in the median, peroneal and sural nerves, except in the distal portion of the deep peroneal nerve. In this nerve, motor conduction was slowed because of compression by metal-lined safety shoes; changes in this segment are not included
