From "won't learn" to "can't learn" in language learning: Unpacking the chain mediating role of boredom and negative rumination.

Drawing on Response Style Theory, this study examines how the ideal L2 self is associated with learning burnout through the mediating role of boredom and negative rumination in language learning. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 465 Chinese university students, and Structural Equation Modeling was conducted to examine the relationship between the four variables. The results indicate that: (1) The ideal L2 self did not exert a significant direct effect on learning burnout; (2) Boredom and negative rumination each independently mediated the association between ideal L2 self and learnin

Nonhuman primates learn adjacent dependencies but fail to learn nonadjacent dependencies in a statistical learning task with a salient cue.

There is ample evidence that humans and nonhuman animals can learn complex statistical regularities presented within various types of input. However, humans outperform their nonhuman primate counterparts when it comes to recognizing relationships that exist across one or several intervening stimuli (nonadjacent dependencies). This is especially true when the two elements in the dependency do not share any perceptual similarity (arbitrary associations). In the present study, we investigated whether manipulating the saliency of the predictive stimulus would enhance nonadjacent dependency learnin

Few-shot learning for the classification of intestinal tuberculosis and Crohn's disease on endoscopic images: A novel learn-to-learn framework.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Standard deep learning methods have been found inadequate in distinguishing between intestinal tuberculosis (ITB) and Crohn's disease (CD), a shortcoming largely attributed to the scarcity of available samples. In light of this limitation, our objective is to develop an innovative few-shot learning (FSL) system, specifically tailored for the efficient categorization and differential diagnosis of CD and ITB, using endoscopic image data with minimal sample requirements. METHODS: A total of 122 white-light endoscopic images (99 CD images and 23 ITB images) were collected (one

Machine learning versus deep learning for screening ischemic stroke among asymptomatic population.

Ischemic stroke puts great health burden in public. However, the diagnosis is based on head CT or MRI scanning. We aim to develop classifier models to screen asymptomatic ischemic stroke based on clinical data without imaging. The subjects (age ≥ 20 years) were recruited into our study who attended health examination. We developed models to classify subjects with or without ischemic stroke using support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and convolutional neural network (CNN). The candidate variables included sex, age, height, weight, blood pressure,

Active learning meets metadynamics: automated workflow for reactive machine learning interatomic potentials.

Atomistic simulations driven by machine-learned interatomic potentials (MLIPs) are a cost-effective alternative to ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). Yet, their broad applicability in reaction modelling remains hindered, in part, by the need for large training datasets that adequately sample the relevant potential energy surface, including high-energy transition state (TS) regions. To optimise dataset generation and extend the use of MLIPs for reaction modelling, we present a data-efficient and fully automated workflow for MLIP training that requires only a small number (typically five to te

Scaffolding Learning Via Multimodal STEM Text Sets for Students with Learning Disabilities.

The importance of text complexity has gained recognition since the Common Core State Standards (CCSS-ELA) were developed. The Linking Science and Literacy for All Learners (LS&L4AL) program uses multimodal STEM text sets to link reading grade-band complex texts with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) sense-making. We define a multimodal STEM text set as a coherent collection of resources pertaining to an anchor phenomenon and line of inquiry that support learners' acquiring the disciplinary literacy skills and sense-making called for by the NGSS and CCSS-ELA shared practices. The anchor

Functional Interactions Between Sleep and Circadian Rhythms in Learning and Learning Disabilities.

The propensity for sleep is timed by the circadian system. Many studies have shown that learning and memory performance is affected by circadian phase. And, of course it is well established that critical processes of memory consolidation occur during and depend on sleep. This chapter presents evidence that sleep and circadian rhythms do not just have separate influences on learning and memory that happen to coincide because of the circadian timing of sleep, but rather sleep and circadian systems have a critical functional interaction in the processes of memory consolidation. The evidence comes

The Link between Microdevelopment and Long-Term Learning Trajectories in Science Learning.

Long-term learning trajectories evolve through microdevelopmental sequences (i.e., short-term processes of change during learning tasks) and depend on variability during and across learning tasks. The aim of this study is to examine the coupling between short-term teacher-student dynamics and students' long-term learning trajectories, thereby providing empirical support for the link between the short- and long-term time scale in cognitive development. For 31 students (ages 3-5 years) from regular and special education, five teacher-student interactions during science tasks were filmed and code

Learning to Detect Cognitive Impairment through Digital Games and Machine Learning Techniques.

OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most prevalent diseases among the adult population. The early detection of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), which may trigger AD, is essential to slow down the cognitive decline process. METHODS: This paper presents a suit of serious games that aims at detecting AD and MCI overcoming the limitations of traditional tests, as they are time-consuming, affected by confounding factors that distort the result and usually administered when symptoms are evident and it is too late for preventive measures. The battery, named Panoramix, assesses the main

Learning about learning: Mining human brain sub-network biomarkers from fMRI data.

Modeling the brain as a functional network can reveal the relationship between distributed neurophysiological processes and functional interactions between brain structures. Existing literature on functional brain networks focuses mainly on a battery of network properties in "resting state" employing, for example, modularity, clustering, or path length among regions. In contrast, we seek to uncover functionally connected subnetworks that predict or correlate with cohort differences and are conserved within the subjects within a cohort. We focus on differences in both the rate of learning as we

Learning Multirobot Hose Transportation and Deployment by Distributed Round-Robin Q-Learning.

Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) algorithms face two main difficulties: the curse of dimensionality, and environment non-stationarity due to the independent learning processes carried out by the agents concurrently. In this paper we formalize and prove the convergence of a Distributed Round Robin Q-learning (D-RR-QL) algorithm for cooperative systems. The computational complexity of this algorithm increases linearly with the number of agents. Moreover, it eliminates environment non sta tionarity by carrying a round-robin scheduling of the action selection and execution. That this lear

Implicit learning in children with spelling disability: evidence from artificial grammar learning.

The development of reading and spelling skills seems to be influenced by both explicit and implicit learning processes. The aim of this study was to investigate whether children with spelling difficulties show a deficit in the implicit learning of frequent letter chunks. This was done by comparing the performance of children with good and poor spelling skills on an artificial grammar learning task. The results show that children with poor spelling skills have difficulties recognizing previously presented letter strings. Moreover, they show impaired implicit learning of frequent letter chunks,
