Behavioral inhibition in children with learning disabilities.

Children with reading disabilities (RD, n=17), mathematical disabilities (MD, n=22), combined reading and mathematical disabilities (RD+MD, n=28) and control peers (n=45) were tested on behavioral inhibition with a Go/no-go task in a picture, letter and digit-modality. In contrast to children without RD, children with RD made significantly more commission errors on alphanumeric (letter and digit) modalities compared to the non-alphanumeric picture modality. As compared to children without MD, children with MD made as much commission errors on the picture modality as on the letter modality. No

Joint statement--Learning disabilities, dyslexia, and vision.

Learning disabilities, including reading disabilities, are commonly diagnosed in children. Their etiologies are multifactorial, reflecting genetic influences and dysfunction of brain systems. Learning disabilities are complex problems that require complex solutions. Early recognition and referral to qualified educational professionals for evidence-based evaluations and treatments seem necessary to achieve the best possible outcome. Most experts believe that dyslexia is a language-based disorder. Vision problems can interfere with the process of learning; however, vision problems are not the ca

Caring for older adults with learning disabilities.

Older patients with learning disabilities have greater physical and mental healthcare needs than the general population. However, because of a lack of knowledge about learning disabilities and low confidence in working with this patient group, their healthcare needs are often misinterpreted or neglected. By learning more about this group and developing skills that can aid the nurse-patient relationship, nurses will become more confident in their working practice and older patients with learning disabilities can receive the same quality health service as other patients.

[Multifamily therapy in children with learning disabilities].

Multifamily therapy is an evidence-based method used in the treatment and prevention of severe psychiatric disorders, behavioral problems and physical illnesses in children, adolescents and adults. For preventive family-oriented work with children with learning disorders there is a lack of therapeutic models. This article presents results from an innovative pilot project--multiple family groups for families with a learning disabled child of primary school age (six to eleven years old). Based on a systemic approach, this resource-oriented program integrates creative, activity-based intervention

Sexual abuse of adults with learning disabilities.

This paper reports a clinical study of reported or disclosed sexual abuse of adults with learning disabilities. The findings support the results of a recent survey [V. Turk & H. Brown (1993) Sexual abuse of adults with learning disabilities: results of a two-year incidence survey. Mental Handicap Research 6, 193-216] but some differences were found, particularly with regard to sex of the survivors. The study also illustrates more than previous studies a link between sexual abuse and sexualized and inappropriate sexual behaviour and other challenging behaviours in men with learning disabilities

Learning disabilities, employment discrimination, and the ADA.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 was intended to prohibit discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Although the scope of this legislation is broad, there are aspects of Title I and Title II of the ADA that may be of particular interest to persons with learning disabilities who are preparing for employment. This article discusses those aspects and presents case studies to demonstrate how the ADA could potentially be applied to typical situations. Suggestions are given for individuals with learning disabilities, their parents, and teachers with regard to employment

Language-learning disabilities: Paradigms for the nineties.

We are beginning a decade, during which many traditional paradigms in education, special education, and speech-language pathology will undergo change. Among paradigms considered promising for speech-language pathology in the schools are collaborative language intervention and strategy training for language and communication. This presentation introduces management models for developing a collaborative language intervention process, among them the Deming Management Method for Total Quality (TQ) (Deming 1986). Implementation models for language assessment and IEP planning and multicultural issue

Metaphoric competence in children with learning disabilities.

Metaphoric competence was examined in two groups of children with learning disabilities and one group of nondisabled peers ranging in age from 9-0 to 11-0 years. There were five girls and seven boys in each group. One group of students with learning disabilities had a history of spoken language impairment and the other group did not. Subjects were administered three verbal metaphor tasks (comprehension, preference, and completion) and a visual metaphor task, the Metaphor Triads Task (MTT). The three verbal metaphor tasks were administered in three contexts: (a) sentence, (b) story, and (c) sto

Screening for learning disabilities in Oman: confirmatory factor analysis of the Arabic version of the learning disabilities diagnostic inventory.

Students at risk for learning disabilities (LD) are overidentified in elementary schools in Oman due to the absence of adequate instruments which teachers can use in validating their observations. Teachers need valid instruments so that their judgment of students' behaviours can help in making academic and non-academic decision. The Learning Disabilities Diagnostic Inventory (LDDI) is widely used to examine manifestations of LD as an intrinsic processing disorder. This study aimed to verify the six-factor structure with confirmatory factor analysis, and test its measurement invariance across c

Listening to the views of children with learning disabilities: an evaluation of a learning disability CAMHS service.

In line with Valuing People Now: A New Three-year Strategy for People With Learning Disabilities (Department of Health, 2009), this article details a service evaluation for a learning disability-child and adolescent mental health service (LD-CAMHS) in Chesterfield, North Derbyshire. The aim of the project was to produce a set of quality standards in order to ensure service users' needs are met. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven children between the ages of 11 and 17 years, with moderate to severe learning disabilities. Four themes were derived from a thematic analysis; the e

StoryAid: Nursing Students' Relational Learning for Adolescents With Intellectual Learning Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Nursing students express fears and anxieties about caring for people with intellectual learning disabilities (ILDs). Educational storytelling interventions may help overcome these concerns and improve nursing care. METHOD: StoryAid was used and developed in the Heritage-2Health (H2H) Virtual Art and Drama Project. Eight online sessions followed a story about differences and connections. Two trained facilitators and three academic educators supported nursing students (n = 15), adolescents with ILDs (n = 7), their parents (n = 7), and a specialist teacher to deconstruct, reconnect,

Anxiety and Depression in Children With Nonverbal Learning Disabilities, Reading Disabilities, or Typical Development.

The main goal of the present study was to shed further light on the psychological characteristics of children with different learning disability profiles aged between 8 and 11 years, attending from third to sixth grade. Specifically, children with nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD), reading disabilities (RD), or a typical development (TD) were tested. In all, 15 children with NLD, 15 with RD, and 15 with TD were administered self-report questionnaires to assess different types of anxiety and depression symptoms. Both NLD and RD children reported experiencing more generalized and social anxi

Scaffolding Learning Via Multimodal STEM Text Sets for Students with Learning Disabilities.

The importance of text complexity has gained recognition since the Common Core State Standards (CCSS-ELA) were developed. The Linking Science and Literacy for All Learners (LS&L4AL) program uses multimodal STEM text sets to link reading grade-band complex texts with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) sense-making. We define a multimodal STEM text set as a coherent collection of resources pertaining to an anchor phenomenon and line of inquiry that support learners' acquiring the disciplinary literacy skills and sense-making called for by the NGSS and CCSS-ELA shared practices. The anchor

Examining the Preferred Learning Styles of U.S. Dental Students with Learning Disabilities.

As the number of students with recognized learning disabilities who are pursuing higher education increases, strategies for success become important. The aim of this mixed-methods study was to gather from U.S. dental students with learning disabilities information about their preferred learning styles and strategies to achieve the objectives of their academic programs. Data were collected in 2018 from a sample of 11 dental students who were members of the National Dental Association. Data collection was done with the Kolb's Learning Style Index (LSI) version 3.1 and a six-item, open-ended ques

Functional Interactions Between Sleep and Circadian Rhythms in Learning and Learning Disabilities.

The propensity for sleep is timed by the circadian system. Many studies have shown that learning and memory performance is affected by circadian phase. And, of course it is well established that critical processes of memory consolidation occur during and depend on sleep. This chapter presents evidence that sleep and circadian rhythms do not just have separate influences on learning and memory that happen to coincide because of the circadian timing of sleep, but rather sleep and circadian systems have a critical functional interaction in the processes of memory consolidation. The evidence comes
