Lemierre syndrome is a rare condition that arises from septic thrombophlebitis most commonly in the internal jugular vein. Common precipitating factors include recent oropharyngeal, tonsillar, or dental infection or chronic bacteremia. While modern antibiotic usage has decreased mortality rates, challenges persist in accurately diagnosing the condition at the time of patient presentation due to a lack of awareness of this rare disorder. Here, we present the case of a previously healthy 20-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis approximately two weeks before her

Lemierre syndrome is characterized by pharyngotonsillitis that is typically secondary to Fusobacterium necrophorum infection and causes adjacent septic thrombophlebitis and thrombosis with subsequent metastatic abscesses. A 3-year-old boy presented with fever, tonsillar enlargement, and bilateral otomastoiditis with purulent discharge. Physical examination revealed abducens nerve palsy on the left side, with a compensatory left head turn. Otomastoid discharge culture was positive for anaerobic F. necrophorum. Magnetic resonance venography of the head and neck revealed thromboses in left intern

Lemierre's syndrome is a rare but a life threatening condition which affects young healthy individuals, was first described by Dr.Andre Lemierre in 1936. Incidence rates are between 0.6 and 2.3 per million population. It is found more commonly in males, with a male to female ratio of approximately 2:1. Its pathogenesis consists of the development of infectious thrombophlebitis in the internal jugular vein or one of its branches caused by a focal sepsis, mostly localized in the oropharynx, leading to generalized multiorgan metastatic infections, generally to the lung. Lemierre syndrome is a rare clinical entity, characterized by thrombosis of the internal jugular vein that develops after an oropharyngeal infection. We report the case of a 22-year-old woman hospitalized initially for cellulitis of the face. In view of the aggravation of the clinical state (septic shock and multiple organ failure), a computed tomography of the neck was performed and revealed a thrombosis of the right internal and external jugular veins. The patient was treated with antibiotics, heparin, and by a surgical excision for the vascular lesions associated with ligation of jugular ve

BACKGROUND Lemierre's syndrome (LS), a potentially fatal condition, is characterized by thrombophlebitis of a head or neck vein secondary to a head or neck infection, most commonly involving Fusobacterium necrophorum. Its association with polycythemia vera (PV) is not well reported despite the predisposition to thrombogenesis. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 66-year-old woman with a known history of polycythemia vera (PV) who presented with 4 days of worsening right-sided neck pain and odynophagia. The physical examination revealed poor oral dentition, mild erythema of the posterior phary

Lemierre's syndrome (LS) is a rare, potentially life-threatening complication of acute oropharyngeal infection that may progress to mediastinitis if treatment is delayed. We report a case of a 35-year-old woman with no prior medical history who had been using products promoting body mass gain, potentially corticosteroid-based, for three months. She presented with neck swelling, odynophagia, and fever for two weeks and reported New York Heart Association class III dyspnea. Contrast-enhanced cervicothoracic CT revealed laterocervical, parapharyngeal, and tonsillar abscesses extending to the ante

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: We describe a patient who lost her vision because of Lemierre's syndrome. Ophthalmologic complications of Lemierre's syndrome are rare, and very few cases have been reported. Clinicians need to recognize that it is a serious condition that can lead to blindness in some cases.
ABSTRACT: Lemierre's syndrome is a systemic septic embolism resulting from thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. We report a case of blindness caused by Lemierre's syndrome, despite prompt diagnosis and early treatment. A 36-year-old woman was transported to our hospital. She presented with

BACKGROUND: Lemierre's syndrome is a rare disease with different clinical and microbiological criteria. Without adequate treatment mortality is high. It often concerns healthy adolescents who present with common and usually harmless complaints such as fever and sore throat.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a 19-year-old male who was admitted to our hospital with a septic shock after a few days of fever and a sore throat. He was admitted to our intensive care unit. Further examination showed a jugular vein thrombosis and blood cultures showed Fusobacterium necrophorum; a classic presentation of L

Descending necrotizing mediastinitis is a severe infection of the mediastinum. Lemierre's syndrome manifests as thrombophlebitis in the cervical veins, which is caused by a neck infection. A 50-year-old woman had a fever with a 13-day history of neck pain. CT showed a deep neck abscess with vertebral vein thrombosis and mediastinal abscesses. Multiple small pulmonary nodules were found, suggesting septic pulmonary embolism. Emergency surgery for bilateral cervical and mediastinal drainage was performed, and antibiotics and anticoagulation agent was administered. Edoxaban was required to clear

Lemierre's syndrome is a classical presentation of human necrobacillosis. It is characterized by a primary infection in the face including a septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and disseminated metastatic abcesses. Fusobacterium necrophorum is the main pathogen found in that syndrome. The diagnosis is based on clinical features, then on the microbiology with positive anaerobic blood cultures as key role and finally on the computed tomography. Most of the time a well-chosen antibiotic treatment against anaerobic pathogens and Gram negative bacilli is efficient but surgery can b

Classic Lemierre's syndrome is a septic internal jugular venous (IJV) thrombophlebitis secondary to oropharyngeal anaerobic infection in adolescent and young adult. Though upper respiratory tract infection is the most common antecedent, it has also been described following skin, soft tissues, genitourinary and gastrointestinal infections. Fusobacteria necrophorum is the commonest pathogen isolated from blood and tissue cultures but other bacteria like Eikenella correndens, Bacteroides melaninogenicus and Non Group A Streptococcal species have also been reported. The overall incidence of Lemier

Lemierre's syndrome is characterized by acute oropharyngeal infection with secondary internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis and subsequent metastatic infections. The anaerobe Fusobacterium necrophorum is the usual etiologic agent, although other microorganisms, including Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, Bacteroides, and Lactobacilli, may be present alone or in combination with F. necrophorum. Common sites of metastatic infection include the lungs and joints. Thromboembolic complications, such as septic pulmonary embolism, persistent jugular vein occlusion, hepatic abscesses, and ne

We report the case of an 18-year-old woman who was admitted to the medical intensive care unit in Innsbruck with severe septic shock and respiratory insufficiency following a prolonged infection of the upper airways (pharyngitis, sinusitis). Abscessing pneumonia and bilateral pleural empyema were diagnosed as focus. Cultures of pleural fluids were positive for Fusobacterium necrophorum. In addition to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (acute lung injury, acute renal failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation), she developed tenderness in the right neck followed by septic arthritis of th

Postanginal sepsis, also called Lemierre's syndrome, is a rare but acute medical condition complicating oropharyngeal infection. The pathogenesis consists of the development of internal jugular vein septic thrombophlebitis leading to metastatic infections in the lung and other sites. The causative microorganism is most often Fusobacterium necrophorum. We present three patients with Lemierre's syndrome who presented to the Leiden University Medical Center and give a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Lemierre's syndrome (LS) is a rare, life-threatening complication of an acute oropharyngeal infection. It is commonly associated with pharyngitis caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum, which can lead to septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. Subsequently, septic emboli usually form, which can metastasize to the liver, lungs, endocardium, and joints. The role of anticoagulation in LS remains debated and there is no universal consensus on best practice.
CASE REPORT: A 39-yr-old commercial pilot, flying air cargo operations in Australia, presented to the emergency depart
