Intraocular lens implantation combined with penetrating keratoplasty.

A restrospective analysis was conducted of 27 cases of penetrating keratoplasty associated with intraocular lens implantation. Although not statistically significant, the results indicated an 80% success rate when penetrating keratoplasty, cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation were combined in a single operation. Secondary implantation of intraocular lenses in cases of previous keratoplasty were unsuccessful in all three cases.

Cystoid macular edema following intraocular lens implantation.

This presentation recounts the original description of CME and the more recent developments associated with intravenous fluorescein angiography in its study and diagnosis. The work of previous authors to show the incidence of CME and its possible prognosis are reviewed. Our findings in a retrospective study agree with the other authors and show that there is no particular increase in CME following intraocular lens implantation regardless of the type of surgical procedure used. It is established that vitreous loss does increase the incidence of CME. A prospective study with routine intravenous

Iris-claw intraocular lens implantation: Anterior chamber versus retropupillary implantation.

PURPOSE: To compare the outcomes of anterior chamber and retropupillary implantation of iris-claw Artisan intraocular lenses (IOL). DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, single-blinded study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty eyes of forty aphakic patients were enrolled. Patients were randomized into two groups. Each group includes twenty patients. Group 1 received anterior chamber Artisan IOL implantation. Group 2 received retropupillary Artisan IOL implantation. Preoperative and postoperative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), and all complications were noted and com

PURPOSE: To assess the medium-term efficacy and safety of treating nucleus and intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) combined with iris-claw IOL implantation. SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, University of Lyon 1 Claude Bernard, Lyon, France. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: The study comprised consecutive patients without capsule support having PPV combined with iris-claw IOL implantation for posterior dislocation of the nucleus or IOL between 2008 and 2012. The preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative data were retrospectively analyzed.

[Intraocular lens implantation in traumatic cataracts caused by intraocular foreign bodies].

The authors reports about the group of 17 patients in whom an IOL was implanted in eyes with traumatic cataract caused by IOFB. In 8 patients varied the interval between IOFB removal and IOL implantation from 5 months to 5 years. In 7 patients was IOFB removal and IOL implantation performed in one procedure. In one patient was IOFB not removed and in one patient was IOFB removed 1 month after IOL implantation. In two patients was IOL implanted in AC, in all other patients in the bag or in the sulcus. Per- and postoperative complications are discussed. We lost one patient from the observation.

Refractive lens exchange with distance-dominant diffractive bifocal intraocular lens implantation.

PURPOSE: To assess efficacy, safety and predictability after refractive lens exchange (RLE) in patients who had bilateral implantation of a distance-dominant diffractive bifocal intraocular lens (IOL). METHODS: Seventeen patients (34 eyes) were examined after RLE with bilateral implantation of a diffractive bifocal 447D IOL. Eyes were divided into myopic and hyperopic groups. Monocular uncorrected distance visual acuity, best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCVA), uncorrected distance near visual acuity, and best distance-corrected near visual acuity (BCNVA) were recorded preoperatively and

Diffractive multifocal intraocular lens implantation in patients with monofocal intraocular lens in the contralateral eye.

AIM: To evaluate clinical outcomes of unilateral implantation of a diffractive multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) in patients with contralateral monofocal IOL. METHODS: Twenty-two patients who already had implantation of a monofocal IOL in unilateral eye underwent implantation of a diffractive multifocal IOL in contralateral eye were enrolled. The effect of intraocular lens tilt on visual outcomes in scleral-fixated intraocular lens implantation.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of scleral-fixated intraocular lens (IOL) tilt on visual outcomes. METHODS: Ninety-four eyes of consecutive 94 patients who underwent scleral-fixated IOL implantation with Z-suture technique were included in this prospective study. The values of pre- and postoperative 12th month uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), cylindrical refractive error, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and corneal and lenticular astigmatism were recorded. The position of the implanted IOL was evaluated with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). The relationships bet

Bag-in-the-lens intraocular lens implantation in the pediatric eye.

PURPOSE: To study the efficacy, safety, and feasibility of implantation of a bag-in-the-lens intraocular lens (IOL) in children and babies. SETTING: Departments of Ophthalmology, University Hospital, Antwerp, Belgium, and the University Hospital, Ljubljana, Slovenia, and a private ophthalmology practice, Oudenaarde, Belgium. METHODS: Thirty-four eyes of 22 children had implantation of a bag-in-the-lens IOL. The ages ranged from 2 months to 14 years. Congenital cataract was present in 26 eyes, and persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) was concomitantly present in 4 eyes. Fifteen patients had bil

Intraocular lens implantation versus no intraocular lens implantation in patients with chronic iridocyclitis and pars planitis. A randomized prospective study.

PURPOSE: The authors studied the safety of intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in patients with uveitis. METHODS: The authors prospectively randomized 26 patients with chronic iridocyclitis (22 patients) or pars planitis (4 patients) to undergo IOL implantation or no IOL implantation at the time of cataract surgery. RESULTS: There was no statistical difference in visual acuity results at 1 year between the two groups. There was a trend toward better visual acuity in patients with chronic iridocyclitis without IOLs. Cocoon-like dense fibrous membranes enveloped the IOL in two patients. CONCL

[Application of corepraxia in the implantation of intraocular lens].

PURPOSE: In the cases of aphakia or cataract which complicated with iridosteresis, corectasis and pupil displacement, corepraxia was performed when implanting intraocular lens (IOL) in order to recover the normal shape and position of pupil, improve postoperative visual acuity and prevent monodiplopia and glare. METHODS: In the cases which have iridosteresis at the direction of 9-3 oclock or updrawn pupil, iris suture was performed at the incision directly(open method); while those at the direction of 3-9 o'clock, operation was performed outside the anterior chamber (close method). RESULTS:

Intraocular lens implants: a biocompatibility review.

The natural aging process of the eye inevitably leads to the formation of a cataract, resulting in an increasing loss of vision. A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens in the eye and represents a major physical impairment. Modern surgical techniques allow for removal of the clouded lens and replacement with a prosthetic intraocular lens. This article reviews the intraocular tissue response to the implant, which frequently leads to postoperative complications for the patient.

Specular microscopy with intraocular lens implantations.

Specular microscopy performed six months postoperatively on 122 lens implant patients showed that endothelial cell loss rates varied according to method of cataract extraction and type of lens implant. Phacoemulsification with implantation of a Platina-style lens was associated with the highest cell loss; planned extracapsular cataract extraction with implantation of a Choyce-style or J-loop lens was associated with the lowest cell loss. The presence of marked striate keratopathy on the first postoperative day was directly related to endothelial cell loss.
