Bacterial flora of the female genital tract: function and immune regulation.

The use of non-culture gene amplification techniques has improved our understanding of the composition of the vaginal bacterial ecosystem. In most healthy women in the reproductive period the predominant vaginal bacteria are one or more of the following species of Lactobacillus: L. crispatus, L. iners and L. gasseri. However, in other apparently healthy women lactobacilli may be deficient or absent, being replaced by other lactic-acid-producing bacteria: Atopobium, Megasphaera and/or Leptotrichia species. Infection and/or proliferation of pathogenic bacteria in the vagina is suppressed by lact…

Risk factors for anaerobic bloodstream infections in bone marrow transplant recipients.

The incidence of anaerobic bloodstream infections (BSI) in patients who underwent bone marrow transplantation (BMT) recently increased at ou … ia. Fusobacterium nucleatum was the most frequently isolated pathogen (in 17 patients), followed by Leptotrichia buccalis (in 4), Clostridium septicum (in 1), and Clostridium tertium (in 1). Two case patients (9%) died. Severity of mucositis was an independent predictor of anaerobic BSI (odds ratio, 4.4; P=.01). Controlling mucositis is critical for the preven …

The role of microbiota in nasopharyngeal cancer: Where do we stand?

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a common head and neck cancer with a poor prognosis. One of the crucial challenges regarding NPC is its pathogenesis. Recent findings highlight the significance of host microbiota in the development of NPC, affected locally by nasopharyngeal microbiota or remotely by oral microbiota. The oral microbiota can migrate to the nasopharyngeal space, thereby impacting the composition of the nasopharyngeal microbiota. Specific bacterial strains have been linked to the development of nasopharyngeal cancer, including Neisseria, Staphylococcus, Leptotrichia, Staphylococc…

Oral seeding and niche-adaptation of middle ear biofilms in health.

The entrenched dogma of a sterile middle ear mucosa in health is incongruent with its periodic aeration and seeding with saliva aerosols. To test this, we sequenced 16S rRNA-V4 amplicons from otic secretions collected at the nasopharyngeal orifice of the tympanic tube and, as controls, oropharyngeal and buccal samples. The otic samples harbored a rich diversity of oral keystone genera and similar functional traits but were enriched in anaerobic genera in the Bacteroidetes (Prevotella and Alloprevotella), Fusobacteria (Fusobacterium and Leptotrichia) and Firmicutes (Veillonella) phyla. Facultat…

Illumina MiSeq 16S amplicon sequence analysis of bovine respiratory disease associated bacteria in lung and mediastinal lymph node tissue.

BACKGROUND: Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is caused by growth of single or multiple species of pathogenic bacteria in lung tissue followi … ine operational taxonomic units (OTUs) which corresponded to the 16S rRNA gene sequences. RESULTS: Leptotrichiaceae, Mycoplasma, Pasteurellaceae, and Fusobacterium were the most abundant OTUs identified in the lungs and lymph nodes of the calves which died from BRD. Leptotrichiaceae, Fusobacterium, Mycoplasma, Trueperella and Bacteroides had greater relative …

Dysbiosis of the microbiome in gastric carcinogenesis.

The gastric microbiome has been proposed as an etiological factor in gastric carcinogenesis. We compared the gastric microbiota in subjects … axa were enriched in GC, including Lactococcus, Veilonella, and Fusobacteriaceae (Fusobacterium and Leptotrichia). Prediction of bacterial metabolic contribution indicated that serological status had a significant impact on metabolic function, while carbohydrate digestion and pathways were enriched in GC. Our findings highlight three mechanisms of interest in …

Sequencing-based method identified Bacteroides fragilis, Prevotella bivia and Leptotrichia amnionii, in addition to Mycoplasma species detected by PCR. Feature importance analysis identified Fusobacterium, Campylobacter, Stomatobaculum, Leptotrichia and Segatella as key contributors to periodontitis severity classification, consistent with their established roles in periodontal dysbiosis. Comparative analysis of the ocular surface microbiome in type-1, type-2 diabetes mellitus and healthy individuals.

AIM: Ocular health greatly impacts the quality of life, and diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major cause of several visual diseases. Likewise, mi … rsity was found between T1DM and T2DM on both phylum and genus levels; yet genera Brevundimonas and Leptotrichia were more significantly predominant in T1DM. CONCLUSION: Two pathogenic genera, Streptococcus and Paracoccus, were more predominant in the DM group than in the healthy one.

Composition and abundance of microbiota in the pharynx in patients with laryngeal carcinoma and vocal cord polyps.

The pharynx is an important site of microbiota colonization, but the bacterial populations at this site have been relatively unexplored by c … nus level, and the relative abundance of Streptococcus was inversely associated with Fusobacterium, Leptotrichia, Neisseria, Actinomyces, and Prevotella. This study presented a profile for the overall structure of the microbiota in pharyngeal swab samples. Anaerobic bacteraemia in patients admitted to Auckland City Hospital: its clinical significance.

AIM: To determine the clinical significance and outcomes for patients with anaerobic bacteraemia at our institution over a 2-year period. METHOD: The isolates were identified from the laboratory database and patient information obtained from clinical records. RESULTS: Anaerobes were isolated from 140 blood culture sets taken from 114 patients. For 59 patients, the isolates were considered to be contaminants. Of note, all Propionibacterium spp. were considered contaminants. For the patients with true bacteraemias, the most likely source of infection was intra-abdominal, 26 (50%), mucositis as

From gut to mouth: salivary signatures of carcinogenic microbiota.

Recent oncological research has repositioned saliva as a non-invasive, dynamic diagnostic medium that reflects the molecular and microbial perturbations driving gastrointestinal malignancies. Growing evidence highlights characteristic salivary microbial fluctuations, such as the depletion of commensal species (Neisseria elongata, Streptococcus mitis) as well as enrichment of pathogenic taxa (Granulicatella adiacens, Leptotrichia, Fusobacterium nucleatum), which are distinctly associated with initiation of pancreatic, gastric, and colorectal cancers. Gastrointestinal cancers, on the other hand,…

A structural accessibility principle for LbuCas13a activation by noncontiguous DNA.

CRISPR-Cas13a is mainly known as an RNA-guided RNA endonuclease. Recent studies show that Leptotrichia buccalis Cas13a (LbuCas13a) can interact with DNA substrates too, without PAM or PFS constraints, but current understanding of DNA-mediated activation is largely based on continuous target strands. Here, we define a structural accessibility principle for LbuCas13a activation by noncontiguous DNA. We show that activation occurs only when overhang positioning creates an accessible protein-DNA interface. Outer overhangs near the crRNA repeat-adjacent side restore strong trans-cleavage activity b…

Tongue Coating and the Salivary Microbial Communities Vary in Children with Halitosis.

Halitosis is a common symptom mainly caused by microbial activities in the oral cavity. Here, we used 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing and metagenomic sequencing to examine oral microbial compositions and their functional variations in children with halitosis. We found that the tongue coating of subjects with halitosis had greater bacterial richness than those of healthy subjects. The relative abundance and prevalence of Leptotrichia wadei and Peptostreptococcus stomatis were higher in tongue coating samples from children with halitosis than those from children without halitosis; Prevotella shahii…
