[Incidence of solid tumors in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia exposed to radiation after Chernobyl accident].

AIM: To study incidence of solid tumors in patients who developed chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) after exposure to ionizing radiation after the Chernobyl accident. MATERIAL AND METHODS: After analysis of data on all CLL male patients living in Kiev registered in the National Cancer Register of Ukraine in 1991-2008, these patients were divided into two groups. Group 1 consisted of 56 Chernobyl rescuers exposed to ionizing radiation, group 2 - of 684 patients without history of Chernobyl-related radiation. RESULTS: Solid tumors were detected in 14 cases in group 1 and 74 cases in group 2 (

PATTERN OF ACUTE LYMPHOBLASTIC LEUKEMIA IN THE SPECTRUM OF RADIATION-ASSOCIATED HEMATOLOGICAL DISEASES (literature review).

The review presents literature data on the incidence and mechanisms of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) inadults and children, taking into account the role of genetic changes, chromosomal aberrations, and epigenetic disorders that occur pre and postnatally as a result of exposure to ionizing radiation in a wide range of doses. The possibility of developing a set of preventive measures for the occurrence of radiationassociated ALL is discussed basedon the determination of individual variability of patients and the role of the disease's modifying risk factors.

Mortality from cancer and all causes among British radiologists.

The mortality of men who joined a British radiological society between 1897 and 1954 has been compared with that of (i) all men in England and Wales, (ii) men in social class 1, and (iii) male medical practitioners. Radiologists who entered the profession before 1921 suffered a death rate from cancer 75% higher than that of medical practitioners. Among these men there was a statistically significant excess of deaths from cancers of the pancreas (6 against 1.9 expected), lung (8 against 3.7), and skin (6 against 0.8), and from leukaemia (4 against 0.7). There were 72 deaths from cancer among me

Risk of ionizing radiation exposure to children: a subject review. American Academy of Pediatrics. Committee on Environmental Health.

Exposure of children to ionizing radiation most commonly is from the environment, chiefly through cosmic rays and radon, or from medical technology. Medical radiation exposure occurs during diagnosis, therapy, and dental radiography. More is known about the biological effects of exposure to ionizing radiation than to nonionizing radiation from microwaves, radiowaves, and the electrical fields of other electrical appliances. This review applies only to sources of ionizing radiation and does not include the potential risks of indoor radon. The effects on children of ionizing radiation have been

Delayed effects of external radiation exposure: a brief history.

Within months of Roentgen's discovery of X rays, severe adverse effects were reported, but not well publicized. As a result, over the next two decades, fluoroscope operators suffered lethal skin carcinomas. Later, case reports appeared concerning leukemia in radiation workers, and infants born with severe mental retardation after their mothers had been given pelvic radiotherapy early in pregnancy. Fluoroscopy and radiotherapy for benign disorders continued to be used with abandon until authoritative reports were published on the adverse effects of ionizing radiation by the U.S. NAS-NRC and the

[Dermatologic roentgen therapy and radiocarcinogenesis].

Late somatic effects of ionizing radiation can be divided into non-stochastic effects with relatively high threshold doses (cataract, fertility problems, chronic radiodermatitis, and radiogenic skin cancer) and non-threshold stochastic effects. Theoretical and epidemiologic aspects of radiocarcinogenesis and various clinical types of radiation-induced neoplasms (leukemia, thyroid cancer, breast cancer) and genetic effects are discussed with special reference to radiation protection measures.

Malignant diseases of hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues in Chernobyl clean-up workers.

INTRODUCTION: The question as to whether the incidence of leukemias and malignant lymphomas among the clean-up workers increased in 18 years after the catastrophe is still a point of much controversy. Precise diagnosis of the main forms of hematopoietic malignancies and comparison of these data with those in the general population will be helpful in estimating thr relative contribution of the radiation factor to the overall incidence of such pathologies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In all, 187 consecutive cases of malignant diseases of hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues in Chernobyl clean-up worke

Mortality and cancer frequency among military nuclear test (Smoky) participants, 1957 through 1979.

Follow-up of health status has been completed through 1979 for 3,072 (95.5%) of 3,217 nuclear test participants on military maneuvers during the 1957 nuclear test "Smoky." In these participants, 112 cases of cancer were diagnosed, compared with 117.5 cases expected. During the same follow-up period (1957 through 1979), 64 persons died of cancer, compared with an expected 64.3. Statistically significantly increased frequency of occurrence and mortality was found only for leukemia. The amount of cumulative gamma radiation exposure for 1957 ranged from 0 to 10,397 mrem as measured by individual p

Cytogenetic and molecular changes in leukemia among atomic bomb survivors.

Seventy five radiation-related leukemia patients in Hiroshima including 16 patients exposed to more than one Gray were cytogenetically examined. Statistical analysis of data on the frequencies of chromosomal aberrations in the survivor groups according to bone marrow doses by DS86 estimation revealed that the heavily exposed group tended to have significantly higher aberration rates compared to the non-exposed group. Furthermore, the chromosomal aberrations in the survivors were observed to be of a more complex nature and had the characteristic findings of secondary leukemia. These observation

An evaluation of several methods for assessing the effects of occupational exposure to radiation.

Several methods for the analysis of occupational radiation exposure data, including procedures based on Cox's proportional hazards model, are presented and evaluated. Issues of interest include the contribution of an external control, the effective handling of highly skewed exposure data, and the potential for detecting effects in populations occupationally exposed to radiation. Expressions for evaluating the power of various procedures are derived and applied to data from the Hanford population in order to determine power curves for detecting leukemia effects, with both additive and multiplic

Radiation-Induced Meningiomas.

While the majority of meningiomas encountered clinically are sporadic, there is a rare subset that arises due to early life or childhood irradiation. Sources of this radiation exposure may be due to treatment of other cancers such as acute childhood leukemia, other central nervous system tumors such as medulloblastoma, the treatment of tinea capitis (rarely and historically), or environmental exposures, as seen in some of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb survivors. Regardless of their etiology, however, radiation-induced meningiomas (RIMs) tend to be highly biologically aggressive irresp

Murine thymic lymphoma is associated with a species-specific hematopoietic progenitor cell subpopulation.

Many strains of laboratory mouse are uniquely susceptible to the development of T cell lymphoma/leukemia, either spontaneously or as a result of chemical or radiation exposure. In contrast, T cell leukemias or lymphomas which are relatively uncommon in human populations, are not easily induced by radiation, and are not generally associated with chemotherapy or chemical exposure. Evidence is presented to suggest that differences in the susceptibility to the development of these malignancies is related to subtle but important variations in the regulation of hematopoietic stem cell differentiatio

Mortality among workers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Evidence of radiation effects in follow-up through 1984.

White men hired at the Oak Ridge (Tenn) National Laboratory between 1943 and 1972 were followed up for vital status through 1984 (N = 8318, 1524 deaths). Relatively low mortality compared with that in US white men was observed for most causes of death, but leukemia mortality was elevated in the total cohort (63% higher, 28 deaths) and in workers who had at some time been monitored for internal radionuclide contamination (123% higher, 16 deaths). Median cumulative dose of external penetrating radiation was 1.4 mSv; 638 workers had cumulative doses above 50 mSv (5 rem). After accounting for age,

Exposure assessment and other challenges in non-ionizing radiation studies of childhood leukaemia.

Studies of electromagnetic fields (EMF) and the development of childhood leukaemia face unique difficulties. EMF are imperceptible, ubiquitous, have multiple sources, and can vary greatly over time and distances. Childhood leukaemia and high average exposures to magnetic fields are both quite rare. Thus, a major challenge in EMF epidemiology is the small number of highly exposed cases and the necessity for retrospective assessment of exposure. Only studies designed to minimize bias while maximizing our ability to detect an association, should one exist, would have a potential to contribute to

ZK1, a novel Krüppel-type zinc finger gene, is induced following exposure to ionizing radiation and enhances apoptotic cell death on hematopoietic cells.

To identify and early response factor by exposure to ionizing radiation, we cloned the cDNA of a novel Krüppel-type zinc finger (ZNF) gene, ZK1, from a cDNA library constructed from the human leukemia cell line, CMK86, using degenerate primers. This cDNA encoded a protein of 671 amino acids with an A box of Krüppel-associated box (KRAB) domain at the N-terminus, followed by 15 ZNF motifs. The expression level of the ZK1 mRNA in human leukemia cells lines, CMK86 and U937, was increased after exposure to ionizing radiation. Furthermore, murine myeloid precursor 32D cells that were stably transfe

Radiation and the risk of chronic lymphocytic and other leukemias among chornobyl cleanup workers.

BACKGROUND: Risks of most types of leukemia from exposure to acute high doses of ionizing radiation are well known, but risks associated with protracted exposures, as well as associations between radiation and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), are not clear. OBJECTIVES: We estimated relative risks of CLL and non-CLL from protracted exposures to low-dose ionizing radiation. METHODS: A nested case-control study was conducted in a cohort of 110,645 Ukrainian cleanup workers of the 1986 Chornobyl nuclear power plant accident. Cases of incident leukemia diagnosed in 1986-2006 were confirmed by
