Microbleed topography, leukoaraiosis, and cognition in probable Alzheimer disease from the Sunnybrook dementia study.

BACKGROUND: Microbleeds are hemosiderin deposits around small vessels and are well visualized with T2*-weighted gradient-recalled echo (GRE) imaging. OBJECTIVES: To determine frequency and topography of microbleeds in Alzheimer disease (AD) and to assess their association with leukoaraiosis and cognition. DESIGN: Case-control cross-sectional analysis. Microbleeds were counted using GRE imaging. Leukoaraiosis was rated on T2-weighted and proton density-weighted scans using the Age-Related White Matter Changes Rating Scale (ARWMC). Neuropsychological tests indexed cognition. SETTING: The Cogn

Leukoaraiosis does not impact motor outcomes in Parkinson's patients post deep brain stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess the impact of leukoaraiosis (LA) on motor outcomes in Parkinson disease (PD) patients undergoing DBS. We hypothesized that LA is associated with less improvement in motor function in PD patients post-DBS. METHODS: We reviewed data of adult patients with PD treated with DBS in a single center between 2012 and 2021. Demographics, risk factors, medications, Hoehn and Yahr scale and Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) Motor Score before and after DBS and severity of LA were collected. Simple linear regression (SLR) was used to determine variables of in

Metabolically healthy obesity and risk of leukoaraiosis; a population based cross-sectional study.

Metabolically healthy obese (MHO) individual is known to be defended from the metabolic complications of obesity. Leukoaraiosis, which is commonly detected on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is now recognized as a risk of stroke, dementia and death. However, the association between MHO and the prevalence of leukoaraiosis is unclear. In this cross-sectional study of 796 participants who received a medical examination program, we investigated the association between MHO and the prevalence of leukoaraiosis. We used common clinical markers for definition of metabolic healthy status: blood

Leukoaraiosis as a Promising Biomarker of Stroke Recurrence among Stroke Survivors: A Systematic Review.

Stroke is the leading cause of functional disability worldwide, with increasing prevalence in adults. Given the considerable negative impact on patients' quality of life and the financial burden on their families and society, it is essential to provide stroke survivors with a timely and reliable prognosis of stroke recurrence. Leukoaraiosis (LA) is a common neuroimaging feature of cerebral small-vessel disease. By researching the literature of two different databases (MEDLINE and Scopus), the present study aims to review all relevant studies from the last decade, dealing with the clinical util

[Leukoaraiosis as a cause of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy--a case report].

The paper presents the case of a 61-year-old man with specific symptoms of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. The head computed tomographyscans revealed multiple leukoaraiotic lesions. Leukoaraiosis is a disease affecting small cerebral vessels. Its pathogenesis is associated with a chronic inflammatory process and ischemic vascular endothelial dysfunction which reduce the cerebral blood flow. It cannot be ruled out that this process, alongside with Horton disease, hypertension, diabetes and atherosclerosis, may also be involved in the pathogenesis of non-arteritic anterior isch

Silent cerebral microbleeds on susceptibility-weighted imaging of patients with ischemic stroke and leukoaraiosis.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are an increasingly recognized in patients with cerebrovascular disease who undergo the new MRI techniques. Susceptibility-weighted MRI is sensitive to detect silent microbleeds which are associated with microangiopathy from atherosclerosis, amyloid angiopathy or asymptomatic elderly individuals. CMBs are intracerebral old hemosiderin deposits in the perivascular space, and the clinical significance of such 'microbleeds' remains controversy. We investigated the incidence of microbleeds among different ischemic stroke subtypes and the severity of leukoarai

Leukoaraiosis is associated with functional impairment in older patients with Alzheimer's disease but not vascular dementia.

BACKGROUND: Leukoaraiosis (LA) is a common finding in older persons, and might be associated with reduced cognitive performance, gait abnormalities, and functional impairment. Although LA is more frequent in persons affected by dementia, scant data are available about its clinical consequences in this group of patients. OBJECTIVE: To study the association between presence of LA and functional performance in basic activities of daily living in a sample of older persons affected by dementia. DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional study on 214 patients; 77 affected by late onset Alzheimer's dis

Pulse-wave encephalopathy: a comparative study of the hydrodynamics of leukoaraiosis and normal-pressure hydrocephalus.

There is a strong association between the occurrence of leukoaraiosis and normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). Venous compression secondary to alterations in craniospinal compliance is implicated in the pathogenesis of NPH, and venous pathology has also been implicated in leukoaraiosis. The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast the blood-flow and fluid-pulsatility characteristics of these conditions. I initially studied 18 subjects without pathology, with MRI flow-quantification studies of the cerebral arteries and veins, to define the range of normality. The main study involved 10

Leukoaraiosis and lacunar infarcts in ischemic stroke: role of age and vascular risk factors.

To assess the role that age and some vascular risk factors play in the pathogenesis of leukoaraiosis and lacunar infarcts in patients with ischemic stroke, we examined 71 consecutive patients who had undergone magnetic resonance imaging because of clinical suspicion of stroke. We collected data regarding hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cardiac diseases, hypercholesterolemia, and hematocrit, and compared patients with lacunar infarcts to those with cortical or subcortical nonlacunar lesions. Patients were then assigned to one of two age groups, Group A (< or = 66 years), or Group B (> 66 years

Correlates of telomere length shortening in peripheral leukocytes of HIV-infected individuals and association with leukoaraiosis.

Telomere length (TL) is a marker of cellular and biological aging. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has been reported to be associated with short TLs, which suggests that accelerated biological aging occurs in some cellular compartments of HIV+ individuals. In this study, we measured the TLs of peripheral leukocytes of HIV+ and healthy individuals and examined the biological and environmental correlates of TL. We also investigated the influence of TL on leukoaraiosis, an indicator of cerebral small vessel disease, in HIV+ individuals. Three hundred and twenty-five HIV+ individuals

Presence of central veins and susceptibility weighted imaging for evaluating lesions in multiple sclerosis and leukoaraiosis.

PURPOSE: The process of demyelination in multiple sclerosis (MS) is reflected in lesions of the central nervous system (CNS), which are found in an abundance of different diseases and are frequently radiographically indistinguishable. Our aim was to determine whether the perivenous distribution of MS lesions identified on susceptibility weighted images (SWI) could be used as a specific radiographic sign for MS, and also to determine whether the visibility of the central vein (CV) is affected by the activity of MS lesions. METHODS: We retrospectively examined 34 subjects with MS and 19 subject

Analysis of genetic polymorphisms associated with leukoaraiosis in the southern Chinese population: A case-control study.

Leukoaraiosis (LA) is a frequent neuroimaging finding commonly observed on brain MRIs of elderly people with prevalence ranging from 50% to 100%. Multiple susceptibility genes or genetic risk factors for LA have been identified in subjects of European descent. Here, we report the first replication study on several common and novel genetic variations in the Chinese population. In this study, a total of 244 subjects (201 LA patients and 43 controls) were enrolled according to our new and strict definition for LA. Subsequently, 6 genetic variants at 5 genes, rs3744028 in TRIM65, rs1055129 in TRIM

Leukoaraiosis, cognitivity and affectivity in elderly patients: on the lack of correlations between neurodiagnostic and psychometric findings.

Among the age-related pathophysiological alterations of the brain, the anomalies of the white matter are becoming of increasing interest at both pathological and clinical levels. Wherever specific pathologies of the white matter can be excluded, the still encountered anomalies are generally defined as leukoaraiosis (from the Greek words white and rarefaction), in order to indicate certain ill-defined, slurred subcortical areas which may be single, multiple, or confluent, representing transparent white matter regions, most probably of ischemic origin. The causes, risk factors and clinical signi

Relation between MRI features and dementia in cerebrovascular disease patients with leukoaraiosis: a longitudinal study.

We examined selective MRI features (localization and degree of white matter abnormalities, cortical and subcortical atrophy) in relation to cognitive decline in patients with cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and leukoaraiosis (LA). We enrolled 6 female and 18 male CVD patients (mean age 66.2 +/- 6.6 years) whose Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) revealed LA and who displayed a history of stroke or TIA; none showed signs of cortical infarcts or normal pressure hydrocephalus. Two blind raters independently scored MRI scans with a high level of agreement. All patients underwent extensive clinico-neuro

Silent cerebral microbleeds on T2*-weighted MRI: correlation with stroke subtype, stroke recurrence, and leukoaraiosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Gradient-echo T2*-weighted MRI is uniquely sensitive to detect silent, old hemosiderin deposits, but the clinical significance of such "microbleeds" remains to be determined. Therefore, we investigated the incidence and the number of microbleeds among different stroke subtypes and the correlation with stroke recurrence and the severity of leukoaraiosis. METHODS: This study consisted of 213 patients (73.5+/-9.1 years old, 104 men and 109 women), who were classified according to stroke subtypes into atherothrombotic infarction (24 patients), cardioembolic infarction (23

The Impact of Periventricular Leukoaraiosis in Post-stroke Oropharyngeal Dysphagia: A Swallowing Biomechanics and MRI-Based Study.

Oropharyngeal dysphagia is a highly prevalent post-stroke complication commonly associated with topographically specific gray-matter damage. In contrast, the role of damage to the extensive white matter brain network (leukoaraiosis) in post-stroke oropharyngeal dysphagia has not yet been clarified. We aim to assess the role of leukoaraiosis in post-stroke oropharyngeal dysphagia. We designed a cross-sectional study and retrospectively collected from our database patients with dysphagia affected by a recent stroke and on whom both a brain 1.5 T-MRI and a videofluoroscopy had been performed.
