A case of lung abscess of the felt lower lobe in a 19-year-old woman with elevated serum levels of Sialyl Lewis X-i (SLX) and CA 19-9 is reported. Completing the lobectomy, serum SLX level returned to the normal range within a week postoperative day. Five different human alpha-1,3-fucosyltransferase genes, the Fuc-TIII, Fuc-TIV, Fuc-TV, Fuc-TVI and Fuc-TVII genes, have been cloned to date. To investigate mechanisms of mast-cell proliferation, we have utilized infection of Lewis rats with the intestinal nematode, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, which induces a pronounced intestinal mast-cell hyperplasia. Adoptive transfer of 2 x 10(8) immune mesenteric lymph node cells (IMLN), collected 14 days post infection with 3000 third stage larvae (L3), into rats concurrently given 3000 L3 hastened the expected intestinal mastocytosis by up to 4-5 days. Noroviruses are the primary viral pathogens responsible for epidemic acute gastroenteritis. The novel GII.4 Sydney 2012 variant, which emerged during the 2012/13 winter season, led to significant global outbreaks.
