Treatment of human head lice infestations in a single application with a new galenic lotion.

To evaluate the efficiency and safety of a new galenic meta-emulsion for the treatment of human head lice (Pediculus capitis) in a single application. A controlled clinical study was conducted comparing lice infestation and nit hatching observed before and after a treatment in a single application. Eighty-two of the 87 children included completed the study. An infestation control was performed on 36 and 46 children, 8 and 24 h respectively after application. Five days later, a meticulous hair examination was carried out to check that the lice infestation was completely cured. After a single ap

Field study on the insecticidal efficacy of Advantage against natural infestations of dogs with lice.

A clinical field trial was performed to evaluate the efficacy of imidacloprid, the active ingredient of Advantage 10% Spot-On, against natural lice infestations on dogs. Imidacloprid was highly effective against both sucking (Linognathus setosus) and biting (Trichodectes canis) lice over the 6-week period of the trial. The duration of efficacy exceeded the egg-to-imago development period of both lice. Signs of remission of dermatitis and alopecia became visible to the pet owners at 2 weeks after treatment. The constant pruritus caused by the lice was seen for up to 2-4 weeks after treatment ev

Burden and Experiences of Head Lice Infestation Among Children in Western Australia.

BACKGROUND: Head lice is an ectoparasitic skin infection commonly seen in primary school-aged children. In remote Australia, where rates of other skin infections and downstream sequelae are endemic, the rate of head lice infestation is unknown. METHODS: This multimethod observational study is aimed at describing the burden of head lice for remote-residing children from nine communities in the Kimberley, Western Australia. Qualitative and quantitative data collected by the See, Treat, Prevent Skin Sores and Scabies ('SToP') Trial at 10 timepoints between May 2019 and December 2022 were analyse

Stigma, Perceptions, and Parental Responses to Children's Head Lice Infestation in Greece.

BACKGROUND: Head lice remain a frequent concern in schools, with social stigma and misconceptions often influencing parental attitudes more than medical realities. Understanding these psychosocial dimensions is essential for designing effective school health strategies. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 227 parents of preschool and primary school children across 13 regions in Greece. A structured 20-item questionnaire was used. Exploratory factor analysis identified underlying attitudinal factors, while correlations and latent profile analysis explored distinct psyc

Prevalence of lice infestation in alpaca crias from the southern Peruvian Andes.

Lice are very common ectoparasites of humans and other animals. These ectoparasites cause various health problems in the hosts, like alpacas, such as intense itching, skin irritation, hair or wool loss, anaemia, and, in severe cases, reduced milk and meat production due to the stress they cause in the host. Epidemiological studies in alpacas are necessary to determine the magnitude and distribution of lice infestation, which would assist in the implementation of control measures. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of lice infestation in newborn and young alpacas (crias) from

Crab lice infestation in unilateral eyelashes and adjacent eyelids: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Crab lice (Phthirus pubis) infestation can occur at any age, to either males or females, and across all regions of the world. However, cases involving the eyelashes and adjacent eyelids (phthiriasis palpebrarum) are rare. Usually occurring as a sexually transmitted disease, crab lice can be spread by poor hygiene or in a dirty environment through direct contact with contaminated skin (hands) or textiles (towels and clothing). CASE SUMMARY: A 50-year-old woman presented to our hospital with a 2-wk history of chronic eyelid pain and itching in the right eye, which exacerbated in the

[Lice in Mali: frequency of infestation, genotyping, infection rate and case management].

OBJECTIVES: Because lice-transmitted infections are a real public health problem, epidemiological studies in different ecoclimatic zones of Africa are useful. This article aims to describe the frequency of lice infestation, their genotypes, and their infection by pathogens in the regions of Koulikoro and Mopti. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional survey allowed us to collect lice from rural populations. Techniques of molecular biology (real-time PCR, standard PCR, and genotyping) were used for analysis of lice samples. RESULTS: Infestation rates were 57% (12/21) among subjects in Diankabou, in th

In vitro comparison of four treatments which discourage infestation by head lice.

Products which discourage the transmission of head lice are appealing; however, few studies have tested this concept. This study aims to test the efficacy of four commercial products which claim to discourage infestation by head lice; MOOV Head Lice Defence Spray (MOOV), Wild Child Quit Nits Head Lice Defence Spray (Wild Child), 100% Natural Head Lice Beater (Lice Beater) or Lysout Natural Anti-Lice Spray (Lysout). An in vitro challenge test was used. Briefly, one half of a filter paper lining the base of a petri dish was treated with the test product. Lice were then introduced to the centre o

Randomized, investigator-blinded, controlled clinical study with lice shampoo (Licener®) versus dimethicone (Jacutin® Pedicul Fluid) for the treatment of infestations with head lice.

The present clinical trial was conducted to obtain additional data for the safety and efficacy of a head lice shampoo that is free of silicone compared with an anti-head lice product containing dimethicone. Both products act by a physical mode of action. This randomized, investigator-blinded, controlled clinical study was conducted between July and November 2016 in households of two villages (Abou Rawash and Shandalat) in Egypt. Children older than 2 years with an active head lice infestation were treated with either a shampoo-based head lice treatment containing neem extract (Licener®) or dim

Head lice predictors and infestation dynamics among primary school children in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Health providers need to know which measures to take and children to prioritize in order to decrease costs associated with head lice infestations. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to determine the most important predictors for head lice and identify the major drivers of an infestation outbreak in a low-prevalence area. METHODS: The study was based on three datasets of head lice prevalence (retrospective, point prevalence and prospective approach) from primary school children (ages 6-12) at 12 schools in Oslo, Norway. The tested predictors were siblings with lice, individual and household c

Severe iron deficiency anaemia associated with heavy lice infestation in a young woman.

Lice feed on human blood, and heavy and chronic lice infestation can lead to chronic blood loss with resultant iron deficiency anaemia. Although no definite relationship between lice infestation and iron deficiency anaemia has been described, the concurrent presence of these two conditions has been reported in children and adults, as well as in cattle. We present a case of a young woman with severe iron deficiency anaemia that could not be explained by the known causes of iron deficiency anaemia. However, the patient was found to have heavy and chronic head lice infestation.
