Lighting up arginine metabolism reveals its functional diversity in physiology and pathology.

Arginine is one of the most metabolically versatile amino acids and plays pivotal roles in diverse biological and pathological processes; however, sensitive tracking of arginine dynamics in situ remains technically challenging. Here, we engineer high-performance fluorescent biosensors, denoted sensitive to arginine (STAR), to illuminate arginine metabolism in cells, mice, and clinical samples. Utilizing STAR, we demonstrate the effects of different amino acids in regulating intra- and extracellular arginine levels. STAR enabled live-cell monitoring of arginine fluctuations during macrophage ac

Artificial nighttime lighting impacts visual ecology links between flowers, pollinators and predators.

The nighttime environment is being altered rapidly over large areas worldwide through introduction of artificial lighting, from streetlights and other sources. This is predicted to impact the visual ecology of many organisms, affecting both their intra- and interspecific interactions. Here, we show the effects of different artificial light sources on multiple aspects of hawkmoth visual ecology, including their perception of floral signals for pollination, the potential for intraspecific sexual signalling, and the effectiveness of their visual defences against avian predators. Light sources fal

Noise utilization as an approach for reducing energy consumption in street lighting.

Noise is considered as one of the challenging problems in big cities. However, this noise could be utilized in producing energy especially in dense urban areas. Sound as a form of mechanical energy, it can be converted to electric energy through many approaches including heating, by using the diaphragm and through using piezoelectric materials. This research aims at utilizing noise through using piezoelectric materials as an approach of conversion to produce green sustainable electric energy that can be used to decrease the energy consumption from non-renewable sources and utilizing this energ

Negative lens-induced myopia in infant monkeys: effects of high ambient lighting.

PURPOSE: To determine whether high light levels, which have a protective effect against form-deprivation myopia, also retard the development of lens-induced myopia in primates. METHODS: Hyperopic defocus was imposed on 27 monkeys by securing -3 diopter (D) lenses in front of one eye. The lens-rearing procedures were initiated at 24 days of age and continued for periods ranging from 50 to 123 days. Fifteen of the treated monkeys were exposed to normal laboratory light levels (∼350 lux). For the other 12 lens-reared monkeys, auxiliary lighting increased the illuminance to 25,000 lux for 6 hours

Degradation products from consumer nanocomposites: a case study on quantum dot lighting.

Most nanomaterials enter the natural environment as nanoenabled products, which are typically composites with primary nanoparticles bound on substrates or embedded in liquid or solid matrices. The environmental risks associated with these products are expected to differ from those associated with the as-produced particles. This article presents a case study on the end-of-life emission of a commercial prototype polymer/quantum-dot (QD) composite used in solid-state lighting for homes. We report the extent of cadmium release upon exposure to a series of environmental and biological simulant flui

Light-emitting diodes (LED) for domestic lighting: any risks for the eye?

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are taking an increasing place in the market of domestic lighting because they produce light with low energy consumption. In the EU, by 2016, no traditional incandescent light sources will be available and LEDs may become the major domestic light sources. Due to specific spectral and energetic characteristics of white LEDs as compared to other domestic light sources, some concerns have been raised regarding their safety for human health and particularly potential harmful risks for the eye. To conduct a health risk assessment on systems using LEDs, the French Agency

Lighting up the muscles: 18F-FDG PET/CT in rare disseminated tuberculous myositis.

Tuberculous pyomyositis is a rare and often under-recognized extrapulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis, presenting with non-specific symptoms such as fever and abscess, that may delay diagnosis. We report a unique case of disseminated tuberculous pyomyositis in a 56-year-old male with underlying chronic inflammatory arthritis. The diagnosis was confirmed using CBNAAT, line probe assay (LPA), and histopathology. Currently MRI is the standard imaging modality in use for imaging pyomyositis. 18F-FDG PET/CT can play a crucial role in detecting widespread metabolically active lesions involving m

Chronic dental lighting disrupts blood-retinal barrier homeostasis via vascular and inflammatory pathways.

Excessive lighting is integral to dentists' daily routines but can impair their vision, affecting personal and professional performance. Most studies focus on acute photodamage, neglecting chronic photo-injury from dental lighting and its impact on the blood-retinal barrier homeostasis. An epidemiological survey involving 14,523 individuals showed dentists had 3.6 times higher odds of vision-related issues compared to other occupations (OR = 3.639, 95% CI: 3.064-4.323). Subsequently, chronic photodamage models in rats were created to accurately simulate dental working conditions. Using systema

Supplemental ambient lighting intervention to improve sleep in Parkinson's disease: A pilot trial.

IMPORTANCE: Sleep disturbances in Parkinson's disease (PD) are common and often adversely affect quality of life. Light therapy has benefited sleep quality and mood outcomes in various populations but results to date with conventional light therapy boxes in PD patients have been mixed. We hypothesized that a passive lighting intervention, applied in the morning and designed to maximally affect the circadian system, would improve measures of sleep and mood in PD patients. METHODS: In this single-arm, within-subjects intervention study, baseline objective sleep (actigraphy), subjective sleep qu

Nanotechnology Lighting the Way for Gene Therapy in Ophthalmopathy: From Opportunities toward Applications.

Hereditary ophthalmopathy is a well-described threat to human visual health affecting millions of people. Gene therapy for ophthalmopathy has received widespread attention with the increasing understanding of pathogenic genes. Effective and safe delivery of accurate nucleic acid drugs (NADs) is the core of gene therapy. Efficient nanodelivery and nanomodification technologies, appropriate targeted genes, and the choice of drug injection methods are the guiding lights of gene therapy. Compared with traditional drugs, NADs can specifically change the expression of specific genes or restore the n

A New Lighting System for Surgical Vision Optimization in Barbed Pharyngoplasty for OSA.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) surgery is now a viable solution in selected patients and the "remodeling" palatopharyngeal surgery is the most common one. Recently, it has become less invasive with the introduction of barbed sutures (BS). An optimization of surgical techniques is represented by barbed pharyngoplasty (BP), which requires surgical precision and needs efficient and precise oropharyngeal visualization. Consequently, the lighting system is of pivotal importance in BP. The aim of this work is to describe the first experience on the use of a new lighting system, called KLAROTM in BP f

Towards enhanced ligand-centred photoluminescence in inorganic-organic frameworks for solid state lighting.

Three novel inorganic-organic framework compounds containing the organic chromophore ligand 9-fluorenone-2,7-dicarboxylic acid (abbreviated H(2)FDC) and barium (BaFDC), cadmium (CdFDC) and manganese (MnFDC), respectively, have been synthesized and evaluated for their use as phosphor materials for solid state lighting and other applications. The results are compared with two earlier reported structures containing the same ligand with calcium (CaFDC) and strontium (SrFDC). The barium- and cadmium-containing compounds both show blue excited, yellow photoluminescence, while the manganese structure

Stroboscopic vision as a treatment for motion sickness: strobe lighting vs. shutter glasses.

INTRODUCTION: Countermeasures (e.g., drugs, training, etc.) designed to combat the problem of space motion sickness (SMS) have had only limited successes. A possible solution for SMS and terrestrial motion sickness may rest in preventing retinal slip via stroboscopic vision. METHODS: There were 32 subjects who participated in a study to investigate the effect of stroboscopic illumination on motion sickness using either a strobe light or liquid crystal display (LCD) shutter glasses. There were 19 subjects who read text and made +/- 20 degrees head movements in the horizontal plane (yaw) at 0.2

5-Methoxytryptophol rhythms in the chick pineal gland: effect of environmental lighting conditions.

5-Methoxytryptophol (5-ML) rhythms were studied in the pineal glands of chicks which were adapted to three different lighting conditions: 12 h light: 12 h dark (LD), constant darkness (DD) and continuous light (LL). Pineal glands of chicks kept under LD conditions exhibited rhythmic fluctuations in 5-ML content. 5-ML levels were low (18+/-2 pg/pineal) during the dark phase of the cycle, they increased approximately 9-fold at the end of the dark phase, and remained high (176 +/-6 pg/pineal) throughout the light period. This pattern of 5-ML content also persisted under conditions of DD, indicati

Synthesis, Characterization, Photoluminescence Properties of Rare-Earth Free Activated Sr2GeO4 for Lighting Applications.

Strontium orthogermanate (Sr2GeO4) doped with Mn4+ and Cu2+ phosphors were prepared by high temperature solid state reaction. All the prepared phosphors were crystallized in the orthorhombic lattice with space group Pbn21. The surface morphology of prepared phosphors contains irregular shaped objects with considerable agglomeration. The FT-IR and Raman profiles of the compositions gave characteristic bands belonging to GeO44- tetrahedra. Photoluminescence profiles of Sr2GeO4: Mn4+ compounds are characterized by red emission at 647 nm upon excitation at 433 nm, while Sr2GeO4: Cu2+ compositions

Lighting the path: a narrative review of non-molecular intraoperative lung imaging modalities.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Current protocols lack validated non-destructive modalities to intraoperatively evaluate lung tissue without excision and histological processing, a critical step for confirming negative margins during cancer resections. Surgeons currently rely on preoperative radiologic imaging and intraoperative tactile feedback. Consequently, there is a persistent need to improve intraoperative identification and visualization of lung pathologies, including nodules, ground-glass opacities, and their margins relative to healthy parenchyma. Optical imaging modalities have emerged as

Lighting Up Healing: Green Light-Driven Dual Gasotransmitters Release against MRSA Wound Infections.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) represents a major clinical challenge as a predominant pathogen causing chronic and difficult-to-treat wound infections. Effective strategies that simultaneously combat bacterial infection and promote tissue regeneration are essential yet challenging for managing MRSA-related wound complications. Herein, we report the design of a novel integrated dual-gas release molecular platform, which enable the phototriggered simultaneous release of NO and CO within a single molecular entity, i.e., an acylhydrazine-caged rhodamine (AhCR565).
