The purpose of this study was to determine the acoustic effects of lingual nerve impairment on speech. Neurophysiologic examination and thermal quantitative sensory testing (QST) were carried out to determine if the profile, type or severity of sensory nerve impairment had effects on the degree of speech changes. The study group consisted of 5 women and 5 men with lingual nerve damage following an oral and maxillofacial surgery procedure. Time interval between the examination and the nerve damage ranged from 1 month to 20 years. Formants and fundamental frequency and duration of vowel sounds w

Previous studies on the ferret inferior alveolar nerve found a close association between the spontaneous neural activity generated at a site of nerve injury, and the accumulation of neuropeptides in the injured axons. More recent electrophysiological studies on the lingual nerve revealed high levels of spontaneous activity 3 days after injury, a decline at 3 weeks and a late rise at 3 months. In the present study we have used immunocytochemical techniques to see whether this time course of spontaneous activity is again paralleled by an accumulation of neuropeptides. In 20 anaesthetised adult f

OBJECTIVES: Our objectives were to establish the incidence of lingual nerve damage after surgical removal of lower third molars, to identify the causes of the damage, and to construct a predictive model to assess the risk of lingual nerve injury.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a nonrandomized prospective study of 946 consecutive outpatients subjected to surgical extraction of 1117 lower molars in a university department of oral surgery. Preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative data were gathered, and causal factors of lingual nerve damage were identified by using nonparametric tests and Pe

A lingual nerve injury is an infrequent but unpleasant complication of the removal of lower third molars. The nerve stays at risk even with a correct technique. The classifications of nerve injuries of Seddon and Sunderland give insight in the complexity and give guidelines for prognosis and treatment. Degeneration and regeneration as in other peripheral nerves occur also here and knowledge of these phenomena is crucial for the success of the microsurgical repair. Confronted with the problem, an attempt to a correct evaluation of the extent of the injury should be done, and transfer to a speci

Schwannoma of parapharyngeal space is an uncommon benign tumour of head and neck region. These are slow-growing and usually well-encapsulated masses arising from Schwann cells of cranial nerves. The majority of schwannoma in parapharyngeal space arise from vagus; however, cases have been reported with origin from other cranial nerves. Complete surgical excision is the treatment of choice. We recently experienced a case of schwannoma arising in parapharyngeal space of lingual nerve origin which was treated by transcervical excision.

Iatrogenic lingual nerve (LN) injuries are quite common in oral surgery both in maxillo-facial surgery and in oral surgery. LN runs superficially into the lateral mouth floor just beneath the mucous layer and this position enhances damage frequency. This article lists the different aetiologies of iatrogenic LN injuries and it almost focuses on lesions due to surgical treatment of ranulas. In the case report a LN lesion due to oral ranula excision is discussed; the patient experienced anaesthesia and hyperpatia in the corrisponded tongue side. It was treated with a microneurosugical anastomosis

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcomes of published studies involving lingual nerve (LN) and inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) microsurgery and reviewing differences in sensory recovery and timing to repair for both groups.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: A total of 29 patient charts referred to the principal investigator were reviewed (15 IAN and 14 LN). Age, gender, mechanism of injury, and time from injury to surgical repair were assessed. Two-point discrimination and tactile detection threshold (via von Frey monofilaments) were the utilized measured variables because both are quantifiable and repeatable d

The sagittal ramus osteotomy of the mandible is the most frequently performed orthognathic surgical procedure. Stabilization of the osteotomy may be accomplished by rigid internal or wire fixation. This article illustrates lingual nerve injury following a bilateral sagittal ramus osteotomy of the mandible and fixation with a superior border wire. The etiology and surgical management of this injury are described.

We made a thorough observation of the morphology and course of the lingual nerve (LN) and inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) to clarify their topographical relationships in the infratemporal fossa and in the paralingual area. Thirty-two Korean hemi-sectioned heads were dissected macroscopically and microscopically from a clinical viewpoint. On the 32 tracings on the radiograph, the average distance between the retromolar portion and the LN was 7.8 mm, and no case was found where the LN ran above the alveolar crest as passing along the mandibular lingual plate. The bifurcation of the LN and IAN was

The receptor properties of mechanosensitive afferent fibres in the lingual nerve have been studied using electrophysiological techniques in cats. In normal animals some fibres responded only to mechanical stimulation of filiform or fungiform papillae but others also responded when a cold stimulus was applied to the receptive field. Twelve weeks after crushing the lingual nerve, the regenerated fibres had slower conduction velocities but the receptor properties were not significantly different from normal. Twelve weeks after sectioning the lingual nerve, there was a greater reduction in conduct

PURPOSE: Fibers of the glossopharyngeal part of the superior constrictor muscle are connected with fibers of the transverse lingual muscle, forming a ring of muscle at the base of the tongue. This group of muscles constrict the midpharyngeal cavity during retrusive movement of the tongue. The purpose of this study is to identify the contribution of the lingual branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve to the neuro-motor control of three muscles: the glossopharyngeal part of the superior pharyngeal constrictor muscle, the palatopharyngeal and the palatoglossus muscles.
METHODS: Six en bloc samples

The inferior alveolar nerve is sometimes affected by periapical pathoses and mandibular cysts. However, mandibular intraosseous lesions have not been reported to disturb the lingual nerve. A case of simultaneous paresthesia of the right lingual nerve and the right inferior alveolar nerve is presented. The possible mechanisms of this extremely uncommon condition are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the position of the lingual nerve is important when performing third molar extractions and periodontal and implant surgeries in the mandible. The careless management of the lingual flap can potentially cause damage to the lingual nerve. The location of the lingual nerve in the third molar region was described in the literature; however, to our knowledge, its course mesial to the third molar region was not reported. The aim of this study is to identify and measure the location of lingual nerves in relation to mandibular teeth in fresh cadaver heads.

We have investigated a possible role for the ATP receptor subunit P2X(3), in the development of neuropathic pain following injury to a peripheral branch of the trigeminal nerve. In nine anaesthetised adult ferrets the left lingual nerve was sectioned and recovery permitted for 3 days, 3 weeks or 3 months (3 ferrets per group). A retrograde tracer, fluorogold, was applied to the nerve to allow identification of cell bodies in the trigeminal ganglion with axons in the injured nerve. Indirect immunofluorescence for P2X(3) and image analysis was used to quantify the percentage area of staining at

OBJECTIVE: The authors describe a technical expedient applied during the removal of totally or partially impacted lower third molars, in order to prevent lingual nerve damage. EXPERIMENTAL ASSAY: Retrospective study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample includes 1835 extractions of totally or partially impacted lower third molars, performed on 1030 patients, 493 males and 537 females, aging between 12 and 72 years. All the operations were carried out under local anaesthesia with standardization of the surgical protocol. A mucoperiosteal paramarginal flap was used in case of germectomy, whereas a
