Massive bleeding from an ectopic lingual thyroid follicular adenoma during pregnancy.

Ectopic thyroid is a rare developmental anomaly. It can be found anywhere between the foramen cecum and the normal position of the thyroid gland. Massive bleeding from an ectopic lingual thyroid is unusual and occasionally fatal. We present a case of a 22-year-old woman who had a large mass at the base of the tongue for over 6 years. In the sixth month of pregnancy, the patient experienced massive bleeding from the tongue base mass. A thyroid scan revealed that this mass was the only functioning thyroid tissue. Because of massive bleeding and her shock status, the patient received an emergent

Lingual thyroid, sensorineural hearing loss and mental retardation: a coincidental association?

A case of lingual thyroid associated with mental retardation and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss is presented. Cases of lingual thyroid are rarely reported and usually not in combination with other abnormalities. The theoretical etiology of such association as a result of an intrauterine infection is discussed.

A Case of Subclinical Hypothyroidism with Lingual and Right Pretracheal Ectopic Thyroid.

Ectopic thyroid tissue is most commonly located in a single location, this being the lingual area. Presentation with two ectopic thyroid foci is quite unusual. A girl patient aged 7 years who presented with complaints of two masses in the right anterior neck and submandibular area is reported. Her growth pattern and development were normal. The masses were detected to be dual ectopic thyroid glands by ultrasonography, computed tomography and 99m-technetium pertechnetate thyroid scan. The patient also had subclinical hypothyroidism. She was treated with oral levothyroxine and the masses slightl

Sclerosing papillary carcinoma arising in a lingual thyroid: report of a case.

Ectopic lingual thyroid tissue is an uncommon congenital anomaly. Tumors with identical pathological characteristics to those arising in thyroid tissue may be present in ectopic locations, but there are very few cases of malignant ectopic thyroid tumors reported in the literature. We present a review of this phenomenon and report a case of papillary carcinoma of the base of the tongue, located in ectopic lingual thyroid tissue, in a 30-year-old woman. The patient's presenting symptoms were dysphagia and oral bleeding, and we performed radical resection of the neoformation at the base of the to

Acute infectious thyroiditis in ectopic lingual thyroid causing dysphagia and dyspnoea: a case report and discussion.

Acute infectious thyroiditis in patients with ectopic lingual thyroid gland is extremely rare, and in most cases, this condition, if symptomatic, manifests as dysphagia and dyspnoea. This case report shows that, in addition to the previously mentioned typical symptoms, our patient also suffered from febrile temperature, progressive fullness in the throat and pain during swallowing. Diagnosis of acute infectious thyroiditis associated with lingual thyroid gland is complex and requires evaluation of results of clinical findings and laboratory tests, and also evaluation by radiological diagnostic

Rediscovering the physical exam: lingual thyroid in juvenile hypothyroidism- a case report.

BACKGROUND AND NOVELTY: Lingual thyroid is a rare congenital malformation. The symptoms of lingual thyroid range from hypothyroidism to dysphagia and even sleep apnea. However, it can be difficult to diagnose in asymptomatic children. The novelty of this case stands from the early detection of lingual thyroid prior to the onset of local manifestation, emphasizing the value of meticulous physical examination. CASE REPORT: We present a case of 5 years old girl who had growth failure and no local symptoms, Clinical examination revealed stunting along with a 2-cm size mass in the oral cavity. Her

Pediatric lingual ectopic thyroid: two contrasting cases and a narrative literature review.

OBJECTIVE: To report two contrasting pediatric cases of lingual ectopic thyroid, one involving misdiagnosis and inadvertent excision and the other involving correct diagnosis and conservative treatment, and to summarize the diagnostic and therapeutic lessons through a narrative literature review. METHODS: The clinical data of two children with ectopic thyroid were retrospectively reviewed. Case 1 was a 2-year- and 11-month-old girl with a mass at the base of the tongue that was misdiagnosed as a thyroglossal duct cyst and surgically excised. Case 2 was a 9-year-old girl who presented with a f

Transoral robotic excision of ectopic lingual thyroid: Case series and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Surgical excision of an ectopic lingual thyroid has traditionally been associated with significant morbidity and has therefore been reserved for patients with severe obstructive symptoms or suspected malignancy. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) has provided a minimally invasive approach to completely and safely excise ectopic lingual thyroid. METHODS: Three index cases were identified from the detailed clinical database of TORS patients. A systematic review of the management of ectopic lingual thyroid in the English literature was performed. RESULTS: TORS-assisted excision of a l

Coexistence of pyriform sinus fistula, ectopic lingual thyroid, and ectopic cervical thymus.

OBJECTIVE: We report an extremely rare case of coexistence of pyriform sinus fistula, ectopic lingual thyroid, and ectopic cervical thymus. CASE REPORT: A 16-year-old girl with ectopic lingual thyroid had suffered repetitive painful swelling in the left anterior neck. Barium swallow radiography and computed tomography revealed a fistula arising from the pyriform sinus running down to the anterior neck. She underwent transcervical fistulectomy with preservation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Histopathological examination of the surgical specimen showed coexisting thymic tissue. CONCLUSION:

Multinodular goiter in ectopic lingual thyroid: a case report with comprehensive review.

INTRODUCTION: Lingual thyroid is a rare ectopic thyroid anomaly caused by the failure of thyroid descent during embryogenesis. It accounts for 90% of ectopic thyroid cases. Multinodular goiter (MNG) in a lingual thyroid is extremely rare, with only three cases previously reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old female presented with intermittent mouth bleeding, worsening dysphagia, and a foreign body sensation in the throat. Examination revealed a firm submental swelling and a vascular nodular mass at the tongue base with active bleeding. Imaging and Technetium-99m thyroid scan confirmed li

Multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment of lingual thyroid presenting as hematemesis: A case report.

RATIONALE: Hematemesis is a common symptom of gastrointestinal disorders and is often associated with upper gastrointestinal issues. However, lingual thyroid, a rare ectopic thyroid condition, can also present with hematemesis, complicating diagnosis and increasing the risk of misdiagnosis. This paper reports a case of lingual thyroid in which the primary symptom was hematemesis. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 59-year-old male patient with dwarfism and congenital hypothyroidism underwent irregular thyroid hormone therapy. He was admitted to the hospital after experiencing hemoptysis and a sensation of a

A surgical partial excision for the treatment of lingual ectopic thyroid: a case report.

The lingual ectopic thyroid is a sporadic case. Based on the medical records of Dr. Soetomo General Academic Hospital, Surabaya, they only found one case of ectopic thyroid at least in the last ten years. There is no consensus in the literature about the best therapeutic strategy in managing ectopic thyroid. A 20-year-old female patient with a diagnosis of ectopic lingual thyroid. She has complained of lumps at the base of her tongue since she was ten years old. She performed a partial excision of the tumor with a transoral approach. Partial excision of the lingual ectopic thyroid results in a

The hormonal suppression as first-line treatment of lingual thyroid: A case report.

Ectopic thyroid gland is a rare anomaly in the development of the thyroid gland. It is defined as any thyroid tissue that is not found on its usual topography. We present the case of a 62-year-old patient with difficulty swallowing solid food, occasional sore throat, hoarse voice, and difficulty speaking. The patient was in hypothyroid status. Thyroid scintigraphy and magnetic resonance imaging visualized a nodular mass on the base of the tongue, suprahyoid, and mediosagittal. The pathohistological finding revealed normal thyroid tissue with few colloidal changes, ruled out tumour infiltration

A novel technique for the resection of the symptomatic lingual thyroid: transoral robotic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of the symptomatic lingual thyroid is typically accomplished through surgical resection using a transcervical approach, which carries a high risk of treatment-related morbidity and leaves a visible scar on the neck. In order to reduce morbidity and eliminate visible scarring, this study utilized transoral robotic surgery (TORS) in performing lingual thyroidectomy. METHODS: Between October 2009 and October 2010, three patients with symptomatic lingual thyroid were enrolled in this prospective study. Primary symptoms included dysphagia (two patients) and hemorrhage (one pa

Lingual thyroid: an unusual and surgically curable cause of sleep apnoea in a male.

INTRODUCTION: Lingual thyroid is a rare embryological abnormality that occurs as a result of failed descent of the thyroid gland. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 39-year-old male with an incidental finding of a lingual thyroid during intubation for surgery for lower limb fractures. A sleep study indicated an RDI of 38.6, consistent with severe sleep apnoea. The ectopic thyroid was excised via a suprahyoid approach, with resolution of apnoeic symptoms post-operatively. A follow-up sleep study subsequent to his operation confirmed an RDI of 3.7. CONCLUSION: This is the first time a lingua

Lingual thyroid in a young infant presenting as airway obstruction: report of a case.

A case of lingual thyroid causing airway obstruction in a 3-month-old infant is reported. Endoscopic examination for stridor disclosed an obstructing 4 X 3 cm base of tongue lesion. Nuclear isotope scanning confirmed this to be the only thyroid tissue present in this patient. A transoral excision using the CO2 laser was performed without complication. Only one other case of airway obstruction in the young infant secondary to lingual thyroid has been reported, that being the original case description in 1869. A review of the embryology and discussion of the suggested therapies is presented. The

The gland that never descended: Preoperative transarterial embolization of a symptomatic lingual thyroid.

Ectopic lingual thyroid is a rare vascular developmental anomaly that frequently represents the patient's sole functioning thyroid tissue. We report a 43-year-old euthyroid woman (baseline TSH 1.32 µIU/mL, free T4 1.12 ng/dL) with a symptomatic lingual thyroid measuring 2.1 × 1.6 × 2.4 cm on CT presenting with progressive dysphagia, hoarseness, and globus sensation. Because the hypervascular tongue-base mass required resection, preoperative transarterial embolization of its bilateral lingual arterial supply (right-dominant) was performed via a right transfemoral approach using a Scepter C 4 ×

A rare case of lingual thyroid with hyperthyroidism: A case report and review of the literature.

Lingual thyroid is a rare embryological anomaly resulting from failure of normal thyroid tissue to descend from the foramen cecum at base of tongue to its orthotopic location in front of the lower neck. It is a rare anomaly with a reported incidence of 1 in 3000 of the thyroid disorders. Lingual thyroid is often asymptomatic but may cause local symptoms such as dysphagia, dysphonia with stomatolalia, upper airway obstruction, and often with hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is extremely rare finding and till now there are very few case reports published. We present here a case of lingual thyroid
