Triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio is an independent predictor of the severity of hyperlipidaemic acute pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of acute pancreatitis caused by hyperlipidaemia is increasing. A quick and easy diagnosis of the severity of hyperlipidaemic acute pancreatitis (HTGP) is important to improve patient prognosis and reduce mortality. Previous studies reported that insulin resistance (IR) is associated with acute pancreatitis. Our study aimed to investigate the correlation between the triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio and HTGP. METHODS: Patients' laboratory and clinical parameters were obtained from the institutional pancreatitis database. Univariate

High resolution lipoprotein subfraction profiling identifies obesity associated distributional changes in LDL and HDL subfractions and particle ratios.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is associated with adverse alterations in lipoprotein profiles and increased cardiometabolic risk, yet standard clinical lipid measures provide limited resolution of the underlying lipoprotein structure. Here, we perform a population-level characterisation of the impact of obesity on the high-resolution blood lipoprotein subfraction profile. METHODS: Lipoprotein profiles were investigated in an Australian cohort (n = 1806) stratified by Body Mass Index (BMI) (healthy weight, overweight, obese). The composition and particle number of lipoproteins and their subfractions were

Reframing the High-density Lipoprotein (HDL) Hypothesis in Light of Clinical Trials of Cholesterol Ester Transfer Protein (CETP) Inhibitors.

High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) has been inversely associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk. This relationship is the foundation of the "HDL hypothesis," which states that increasing plasma HDL-C levels would result in a decrease in cardiovascular events. The recent surge in clinical testing of cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) inhibitors provides valuable data for this hypothesis. The CETP inhibitors increase plasma HDL-C along with variable effects on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and apolipoprotein B (apoB). The clinical outcomes

High-Density Lipoproteins (HDLs) contribute to limiting acute tissue damage: proof of concept in a model of mercury-induced nephrotoxicity.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggest that HDLs may protect against the effects of acute injury. Given their multiple beneficial properties, this study aimed to investigate whether exogenous HDLs administration reduces acute tissue damage in a HgCl2-induced renal injury model, potentially contributing to health improvement and disease prevention. METHODS: Acute tubular injury was induced in male Wistar rats with a single intraperitoneal dose of 3.5 mg/kg HgCl2 (ATI group). Two additional groups received either HDLs (ATI + HDL group) or apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins (ATI + Lp-B) isol

Lipid and High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) Subfraction Changes in Premenopausal and Postmenopausal Women With Breast Cancer Receiving Hormonal Therapy.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Hormonal modulation therapy is an important component of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer treatment. However, the type and duration of hormonal therapies have distinct effects on lipid profile parameters and cardiovascular disease risk. This study aimed to investigate the impact of tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors (AIs) on lipid profiles and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) subfractions in women with breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, 100 women were included (50 healthy controls and 50 patients with histologically confir

Role of High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C) as a Clinical Predictor of Decompensation in Patients with Chronic Liver Disease (CLD).

INTRODUCTION: Systemic inflammation triggered by bacterial products like lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in the circulation is an important factor leading to decompensation in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) has a significant role in innate immune response to LPS in the circulation and could therefore increase the risk for decompensation in patients with CLD. In this study, we have explored the role of HDL-C as a prognostic marker for decompensation. METHODS: This was a prospective, observational, cohort study where consecutive patients with C

Protein-Defined Subspecies of HDLs (High-Density Lipoproteins) and Differential Risk of Coronary Heart Disease in 4 Prospective Studies.

OBJECTIVE: HDL (high-density lipoprotein) contains functional proteins that define single subspecies, each comprising 1% to 12% of the total HDL. We studied the differential association with coronary heart disease (CHD) of 15 such subspecies. Approach and Results: We measured plasma apoA1 (apolipoprotein A1) concentrations of 15 protein-defined HDL subspecies in 4 US-based prospective studies. Among participants without CVD at baseline, 932 developed CHD during 10 to 25 years. They were matched 1:1 to controls who did not experience CHD. In each cohort, hazard ratios for each subspecies were c

Indole-3-acetic acid correlates with monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio (MHR) in chronic kidney disease patients.

PURPOSE: Indole-3-acetic acid is a protein-bound indolic uremic toxin deriving from tryptophan metabolism. Increased levels are associated with higher thrombotic risk and both cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. An emerging biomarker of cardiovascular disease is the monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein ratio (MHR). The main purpose of this study was to investigate the association of indole-3-acetic acid with MHR and other markers of cardiovascular risk in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). METHODS: We enrolled 61 non-dialysis CKD patients and 6 dialysis patients. Indole-3-acetic

Disturbances of the transfer of cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in patients with peripheral artery disease with or without type 2 diabetes mellitus.

INTRODUCTION: Low high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol is frequent in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and also in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the major risk factor for PAD. The transfer of cholesterol from the other lipoproteins to HDL is an important aspect of HDL metabolism and function, and may contribute to atherogenic mechanisms that lead to PAD development. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the status of cholesterol transfers in patients with PAD without or with T2DM. METHODS: Patients with PAD (n = 19), with PAD and T2DM (PAD + DM, n = 19), a

Relationship between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentration and ventilator-associated pneumonia in ICU COVID-19 patients.

BACKGROUND: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is frequent during severe COVID-19 infection, but diagnosis remains difficult. During bacterial sepsis and COVID-19, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentration is decreased. Furthermore, HDL particles exerting in normal conditions endothelial-protective effects are dysfunctional in bacterial sepsis. The lipidic profile in COVID-19 with associated bacterial infections is unexplored. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between HDL-C concentration on admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) for COVID-19

HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) Remodeling and Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Assessed Atherosclerotic Plaque Burden: Study in a Preclinical Experimental Model.

OBJECTIVE: HDL (high-density lipoprotein) role in atherosclerosis is controversial. Clinical trials with CETP (cholesterylester transfer protein)-inhibitors have not provided benefit. We have shown that HDL remodeling in hypercholesterolemia reduces HDL cardioprotective potential. We aimed to assess whether hypercholesterolemia affects HDL-induced atherosclerotic plaque regression. Approach and Results: Atherosclerosis was induced in New Zealand White rabbits for 3-months by combining a high-fat-diet and double-balloon aortic denudation. Then, animals underwent magnetic resonance imaging (basa

Comparison of apolipoprotein (apoB/apoA-I) and lipoprotein (total cholesterol/HDL) ratio determinants. Focus on obesity, diet and alcohol intake.

The ratio between apolipoprotein B and apolipoprotein A-I (apoB/apoA-I) has been suggested to be a powerful and more accurate predictor of future cardiovascular disease risk than total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. Since diet and lifestyle can directly influence dyslipidemia, it is of interest to identify modifiable factors that are associated with high levels of the apolipoprotein ratio and if they can have a different association with a more traditional indicator of cardiovascular risk such as total cholesterol/HDL. The relationship between obesity and dyslipidemia is established and it i

Structural and Functional Changes of Reconstituted High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) by Incorporation of α-synuclein: A Potent Antioxidant and Anti-Glycation Activity of α-synuclein and apoA-I in HDL at High Molar Ratio of α-synuclein.

α-synuclein (α-syn) is a major culprit of Parkinson's disease (PD), although lipoprotein metabolism is very important in the pathogenesis of PD. α-syn was expressed and purified using the pET30a expression vector from an E. coli expression system to elucidate the physiological effects of α-syn on lipoprotein metabolism. The human α-syn protein (140 amino acids) with His-tag (8 amino acids) was expressed and purified to at least 95% purity. Isoelectric focusing gel electrophoresis showed that the isoelectric point (pI) of α-syn and apoA-I were pI = 4.5 and pI = 6.4, respectively. The lipid-free

Mechanisms by which carbamoylated high-density lipoprotein (C-HDL) promotes calcific aortic valve disease and exploration of potential targeted therapies.

Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is a progressive fibrocalcific illness for which no effective pharmaceutical treatment exists. This study investigated whether carbamoylated high-density lipoprotein (C-HDL), a defective type of HDL that can develop during inflammation, contributes to CAVD progression and the involved molecular pathways. Male ApoE-/- mice were divided into three groups: CAVD model, cyanate-treated, and inhibitor, and analyzed after 12 weeks. C57BL/6 mice on a regular diet served as blank controls.
