Genetic obesity, including syndromic and non-syndromic forms, represents a minority of cases compared to essential obesity but gene dysregulations lead to complex clinical conditions that make their management particularly difficult. Among them, Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a multisystem human genomic imprinting disorder characterized by overgrowth. We describe the first case of liraglutide treatment in an 18-year-old boy patient affected by BWS complicated by macroglossia, cryptorchidism, nephroblastoma, organomegaly, microscopic lymphocytic colitis, pharmacologically treated arterial

Using metabolomics technique to investigate the response to liraglutide treatment produces helpful information regarding the effects of drug on metabolic regulation. This study tested whether loss of weight by liraglutide combined with decreasing acylcarnitines (AcylCNs) represent an effective strategy to improve insulin sensitivity in obese insulin-resistant females. AcylCN profiles by tandem mass spectrometry, plasma glycosylated hemoglobin, lactate, pyruvate, serum fasting glucose, creatinine, and insulin were assessed for obese insulin-resistant females before and after treatment with lira

Liraglutide is a glucagon-like peptide type 1 (GLP-1) analogue that is approved for long-term obesity management in North America. While bariatric surgery remains the gold standard for weight loss, an increasing number of patients are on liraglutide in the setting of ongoing workup for bariatric surgery. The presence of gastrointestinal symptoms prior to bariatric surgery may prompt testing for dysmotility, which affects surgical decision making. Here we report six cases where treatment with liraglutide was associated with reversible reduction in gastric and esophageal motility in screening fo

BACKGROUND/AIM: Intragastric balloon (IGB) is an effective and safe method of weight reduction. However, IGBs have been associated with a high rate of weight regain post removal. Accordingly, ways to improve sustained weight reduction including concomitant treatment with Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonists have been proposed. This study aims to evaluate the effect of adding Liraglutide to IGB insertion on sustained weight reduction.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all cases treated with IGB with or without Liraglutide was performed. Outcomes were statistically compared.

The local, intramyocardial injection of proteins into the infarcted heart is an attractive option to initiate cardiac regeneration after myocardial infarction (MI). Liraglutide, which was developed as a treatment for type 2 diabetes, has been implicated as one of the most promising protein candidates in cardiac regeneration. A significant challenge to the therapeutic use of this protein is its short half-life in vivo. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic effects and long-term retention of liraglutide loaded in poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol) (PLGA-PEG) nanoparticles

Doxorubicin is an effective chemotherapeutic agent, but it causes gastrointestinal toxicity that impairs treatment efficacy and quality of life. This study investigated the effects of liraglutide, a GLP-1 analog, on acute doxorubicin-induced gut toxicity in rats. Sixty male Wistar rats were assigned to four groups: Control (C), Doxorubicin (D), Liraglutide (L), and Doxorubicin + Liraglutide (DL). Groups L and DL received liraglutide (0.6 mg/kg, s.c.) for two weeks. D and DL were given a single dose of doxorubicin (20 mg/kg, i.p). After 48 h, the distal colon, feces, and blood were collected. AIMS: Renal microvascular dysfunction is a central driver of diabetic kidney disease, yet the potential for rapid therapeutic reversal remains obscure. We investigated the effect of short-term liraglutide on early changes in the renal microcirculation post-induction of diabetes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was induced in BALB/c mice via high-fat diet and streptozotocin. Following induction, mice received insulin or liraglutide treatments for 1 or 2 weeks. Renal microhemodynamics was analysed using laser Doppler flowmetry and wavelet analysis. Histopathological evalu

Recent research indicates that inhibiting myocardial ferroptosis may help alleviate diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). Liraglutide (LIRA), a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, has been shown to offer cardiovascular protective effects. Nevertheless, the specific role of LIRA and its relationship with myocardial ferroptosis in type 2 DCM is still not well understood. An in vivo model of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was created using spontaneous diabetes Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats. These rats received LIRA at a dose of 200 μg/kg/day through daily subcutaneous injections for 8 weeks. In vitro e

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists exhibit beneficial cardiovascular effects. However, the renal effects of different doses of liraglutide in an essential hypertension model have not yet been investigated. Female spontaneously hypertensive rats were treated for 30 days, twice a day, with saline (control) or liraglutide at low (0.06 mg/kg) and high (LH, 0.6 mg/kg) doses. Volume intake and excretion were monitored for a period of 24 hours. In renal tissue, nitrite, nitrate, advanced protein oxidation products, collagen deposition, creatinine (Cr), urea (U), sodium, and potassium were anal

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence supports that dihydroceramides (DhCer) and ceramides (Cer) contribute to the pathophysiology of insulin resistance and liver steatosis, and that their circulating concentrations are independently associated with cardiovascular outcomes. Circulating DhCer levels are increased in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). On the other hand, the GLP-1 receptor agonist liraglutide reduces major adverse cardiac events, insulin resistance and liver steatosis in T2D patients. The main purpose of the present study was therefore to investigate whether liraglutide decreases circu

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Acute liver injury is a current health problem with few effective treatments. The present study investigated the hepatoprotective and curative potential of the glucagon-like peptide-1 analog liraglutide against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatotoxicity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Swiss mice were subjected to two protocols. The first protocol (Pretreatment) consisted of intraperitoneal (i.p.) treatment with liraglutide (0.057 and 0.118mgkg-1) or vehicle (distilled water) once daily for 7 days. On days 6 and 7, the animals were challenged with 2% CCl4 (5mg

INTRODUCTION: Existing pharmacological therapies with basal insulins are limited by weight gain and hypoglycemia, while those with glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists (RAs) are limited by issues of efficacy when used alone. However, when used in combination they show a complementarity of action, in terms of reducing the incidence of hypoglycemia while providing sufficient glycemic control, that might help counterbalance their individual limitations. Clinical trials have demonstrated better efficacy and safety profile of this combination. Insulin degludec/liraglutide (IDegLira) is

BACKGROUND: Cardiometabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity and cardiovascular disease (CVD) remain major global health challenges. Incretin-based therapies, including the GLP-1 receptor agonists semaglutide and liraglutide, and the dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist tirzepatide, are increasingly used to address hyperglycaemia and obesity, and have been evaluated for both cardiometabolic risk markers and selected cardiovascular and renal outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: This review summarizes and contrasts the pharmacology of semaglutide, liraglutide and tirzepatide, distinguishin

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that typically requires long-term drug treatment. The emerging role of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and its receptor agonists in gastrointestinal diseases has drawn much attention. A mouse model of acute colitis was conducted using a 7-day protocol of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS, 3% w/v in drinking water) administration. The efficacy of liraglutide (a GLP-1 receptor agonist) in treating DSS-induced colitis and its accompanying Paneth cell metaplasia was examined and correlated to its impact on the levels of colonic autoph

The prevalence of Obesity is increasing globally, including in Türkiye, and affects all age groups, including the elderly. Previous clinical trials have shown the efficacy and safety of liraglutide in reducing the body weight of older adults. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of liraglutide on weight loss and to identify any adverse effects in elderly individuals with obesity. This retrospective cohort study included patients aged ≥ 60 years with a body-mass index (BMI) ≥ 27 or greater and other comorbidities, as well as those with an initial BMI ≥ 30. Liraglutide is a key therapeutic agent in managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), with benefits extending beyond glycemic control to address cardiovascular and renal comorbidities. As T2DM prevalence rises globally, the need for medications that provide comprehensive health benefits becomes increasingly important. Liraglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing cardiovascular events, especially among patients with high cardiovascular risk, such as those with a prior history of myocardial infarction or stroke. It has shown significant reductions in major adve
