Death literacy: Tensions between theory and practice.

Death literacy is a burgeoning field in palliative care research and the social sciences, exploring people's knowledge, skills, experiential learning and social action as these pertain to death and dying. Death literacy is not described or advocated in UK policy or guidelines explicitly, yet this essay shows that it is mentioned implicitly, and these implicit definitions and uses are explored. In this critical essay, the authors draw on a series of examples from UK-based policy and guidelines to describe the ways death literacy is implicitly articulated in the material. In doing so, the essay

Depression Literacy Among American Indian Older Adults.

Older American Indians experience high rates of depression and other psychological disorders, yet little research exist on the depression literacy of this group. Depression literacy is fundamental for individuals seeking help for depression in a timely and appropriate manner. In the present study the authors examine levels and predictors of knowledge of depression symptoms in a sample of rural older American Indians (N = 227) living in the Midwestern United States. Data from self-administered questionnaires indicate limited knowledge of depression and negative attitudes toward seeking help for

Socio-economic differences in foundation-level literacy.

The foundation literacy skills of children from differing socio-economic backgrounds were investigated in a cross-sectional study. The children were aged between 4 and 8 years and attended Nursery or Primary 1, 2 or 3 classes. Low socioeconomic status (SES) was associated with impairments for chronological age in letter knowledge as well as in both logographic and alphabetic foundation components. There was also an effect on metaphonological++ skill. However, once the SES groups were equated for reading age, high and low SES performance was indistinguishable. The results suggest that delayed a

Health literacy among patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) often experience cognitive deficits and require extensive and complex medical care. However, there is minimal literature investigating how SAH impacts health literacy and how this may affect care. Accordingly, we aim to leverage the NIH's All of Us Research Program to assess how SAH relates to health literacy among a large and diverse patient cohort. METHODS: Using the NIH's All of Us Research Program, respondents with SAH were matched to those without SAH via nearest-neighbor propensity score matching. Only those with SAH prior to sur

Low health literacy impact on headache diagnosis.

Health literacy has a broad range of impacts, including whether and where a person seeks treatment and how well that patient interprets and applies clinical recommendations. Patients with headache may not seek treatment, may fail to disclose even severe pain to their physician, and may not understand or adhere to treatment. Universal precautions can be a helpful initial approach, and information styles can be modified as needed over time. Patients should be asked about headache and explanations about headache causes and treatment should be given in everyday language. The teach-back method can

ILAE genetic literacy series: Focal cortical dysplasia.

Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is a common cause of drug-resistant focal epilepsy in children and young adults and is often surgically remediable. The genetics of FCD are increasingly understood due to the ability to perform genomic testing including deep sequencing of resected FCD tissue specimens. There is clear evidence that FCD type II occurs secondary to both germline and somatic mTOR pathway variants, while emerging literature supports the role of SLC35A2, a glycosylation gene, in mild malformation of cortical development with oligodendroglial hyperplasia and epilepsy (MOGHE). Herein, we

ILAE Genetics Literacy series: Progressive myoclonus epilepsies.

Progressive Myoclonus Epilepsy (PME) is a rare epilepsy syndrome characterized by the development of progressively worsening myoclonus, ataxia, and seizures. A molecular diagnosis can now be established in approximately 80% of individuals with PME. Almost fifty genetic causes of PME have now been established, although some remain extremely rare. Herein, we provide a review of clinical phenotypes and genotypes of the more commonly encountered PMEs. Using an illustrative case example, we describe appropriate clinical investigation and therapeutic strategies to guide the management of this often

Epilogue: Chinese Literacy From a Deaf Lens.

To promote dialogue among literacy researchers from East and West along the "'Silk Road' to literacy" for Chinese d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) students (Andrews et al., 2021), this epilogue to an American Annals of the Deaf special issue on language development and literacy learning of d/Dhh students in Chinese communities poses questions and provides reflections from the perspective of the Chinese Deaf lens on the ideas in the six articles that make up the special issue. This perspective reframes literacy instruction toward an asset-based model that emphasizes visual sensory strengths,

Health Literacy of Patients Attending Cardiac Rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is effective at reducing further cardiac events. However, dropout rates are high, and maintenance of behavioral change post-CR is challenging. Health literacy (HL) may influence self-management of cardiac risk, yet few studies have explored this association. This study aimed to describe HL among CR attendees; first to describe the HL profiles of people commencing CR and second to examine HL changes between program entry and completion. METHODS: CR attendees in Melbourne, Australia, completed the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) at program admission and

Patient Health Literacy and Diabetic Foot Amputations.

Patient health literacy is associated with self-care and management of chronic diseases, including diabetes. Interventions that address health literacy and aim to improve clinical outcomes have been focused mostly in primary care. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between patient health literacy and diabetic foot amputations in a retrospective cohort analysis in a large orthopaedic practice at an academic medical center. Using data extraction from clinical records, orthopaedic patients who had a diabetic foot amputation or re-amputation in the last 2 years were compared

Literacy acquisition influences children's rapid automatized naming.

Previous research has established that learning to read improves children's performance on reading-related phonological tasks, including phoneme awareness (PA) and nonword repetition. Few studies have investigated whether literacy acquisition also promotes children's rapid automatized naming (RAN). We tested the hypothesis that literacy acquisition should influence RAN in an international, longitudinal population sample of twins. Cross-lagged path models evaluated the relationships among literacy, PA, and RAN across four time points from pre-kindergarten through grade 4. Consistent with previo

Early literacy interventions: reach out and read.

Linkages between literacy attainment and poverty have been well documented in the literature. This article reviews the literacy challenges for low-income children and the need for child health practitioners to be informed about children's literacy environments. The authors define literacy and emphasize that literacy is a continuous developmental process that includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Read Out and Read is a national model that has demonstrated its effectiveness to improve receptive and expressive language development in children. Pediatricians are uniquely positioned t
