Behavioural flexibility and problem-solving in a tropical lizard.

The role of behavioural flexibility in responding to new or changing environmental challenges is a central theme in cognitive ecology. Studies of behavioural flexibility have focused mostly on mammals and birds because theory predicts that behavioural flexibility is favoured in species or clades that exploit a diversity of habitats or food sources and/or have complex social structure, attributes not associated with ectothermic vertebrates. Here, we present the results of a series of experiments designed to test cognitive abilities across multiple cognitive modules in a tropical arboreal lizard

Vascularization of the pineal complex in the lizard Tiliqua rugosa.

The vascularization of the pineal complex in the lizard Tiliqua rugosa was investigated by vascular corrosion and latex casting techniques. The fine structure of the pineal capillaries was also studied by transmission electron microscopy. The pineal complex in T. rugosa consists of an elongated pineal gland proper and a separate, distinct parietal eye. The pineal complex derives an abundant blood supply from branches of the middle and posterior cerebral arteries. Scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts revealed a dense and extensive pineal capillary bed which drains ultimately

Components of cochlear electric responses in the alligator lizard.

Electric responses to clicks and tones were recorded at the round windows of anesthetized alligator lizards before and after tetrodotoxin (TTX) was added to scala tympani. By combining click responses obtained in the presence and absence of TTX and at high and low click repetition rates, we trisected click responses into three components: (1) a rate-insensitive, TTX-insensitive component (that we identify as the cochlear microphonic potential or CM); (2) a rate-sensitive, TTX-sensitive component (that we identify as the neural component); (3) a rate-sensitive, TTX-resistant component (which ha

Renal histological and antioxidant response in Egyptian desert lizards during brumation.

Desert lizards undergo hibernation (brumation) to survive extreme cold and food scarcity. This study investigated brumation-induced renal adaptations in four desert-dwelling species (Uromastyx aegyptia, Varanus griseus, Trapelus savignii, and Tarentola annularis) compared to their active states. Histological examination during brumation revealed kidney degeneration, including glomerulosclerosis, necrotic tubules, and cytoplasmic vacuolization. Morphometric analysis showed species‑specific renal changes during brumation; glomerular diameter significantly decreased in U. aegyptia as well as T. a

Include the females: morphology-performance relationships vary between sexes in lizards.

An animal's morphology influences its ability to perform essential tasks, such as locomoting to obtain prey or escape predators. While morphology-performance relationships are well-studied in lizards, most conclusions have been based only on male study subjects, leaving unanswered questions about females. Sex-specific differences are important to understand because females carry the bulk of the physiological demands of reproduction. Consequently, their health and survival can determine the fate of the population as a whole. To address this knowledge gap, we sampled introduced populations of co

Potential role of lava lizards as pollinators across the Galápagos Islands.

Lizards have been reported as important pollinators on several oceanic islands. Here we evaluate the potential role of Galápagos lava lizards (Microlophus spp.) as pollinators across their radiation. Over 3 years, we sampled pollen transport by 9 lava lizard species on the 10 islands where they are present, including 7 single-island endemics. Overall, only 25 of 296 individuals sampled (8.4%) transported pollen of 10 plant species, the most common being Prosopis juliflora, Exodeconus miersii, Sesuvium sp. and Cordia leucophlyctis. At least 8 of these plant species were native, and none were co

The circadian system of ruin lizards: a seasonally changing neuroendocrine loop?

Previous studies have shown that the amplitude of daily melatonin production in cultured ruin lizard pineal organs explanted in the summer is significantly higher than that from organs explanted in the winter. To test whether seasonal photoperiodic changes are decoded autonomously by the pineal gland, pineals explanted in summer were cultured in vitro and exposed to changes between winter and summer photoperiods. The changes in photoperiod duration did not affect the daily profiles of in vitro melatonin production. The discrepancy between the present in vitro results and those from lizards exp

Seasonal variations in circadian rhythms of plasma melatonin in ruin lizards.

We examined melatonin profiles of ruin lizards in different seasons (spring, summer, and autumn) under light:dark (LD) and concomitant responses when transferred to continuous darkness (DD) to determine the degree to which previously reported seasonally dependent effects of pinealectomy on locomotor behavior are related to melatonin secretion. The amplitude of the melatonin rhythm and the amount of melatonin produced over 24 h varied with season. In spring, the amount of melatonin produced was greatest and the amplitude 4- 5 times that found in summer or autumn. The degree of self-sustainment

Immature Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) parasitizing lizards from the southeastern U.S.A.

Preserved museum specimens of 13 lizard and 3 snake species common in the southeastern U.S.A. were examined for immature Ixodes scapularis Say ticks. Five Eumeces and 4 Ophisaurus lizard species yielded an infestation prevalence of 17.8% for species of Eumeces and 29.0% for species of Ophisaurus. Mean intensity of larvae and nymphs was 7.1 and 2.7, respectively, for species of Eumeces, and 6.3 and 1.4, respectively, for species of Ophisaurus. Collection dates of the lizards ranged from January through December, but most were collected from March through October. The maximum number of immatures

Lizard Bite Masquerading as Scorpion Sting Envenomation.

Lizard bite is very infrequent in children. Lizards tend to avoid confrontation. Bites are only inflicted when they are manipulated or when they are cornered and feel threatened. Lizard bites may be frightening but most do not cause serious health problems. The wall lizard or gecko, found in most homes, is not poisonous at all. It only checks insect population. A two-year-old boy was brought with history of lizard bite over right hand when he was trying to capture it. The child had experienced excessive sweating and irritability within two hours of bite. He was treated with supportive care. Pr

The unusual orbitosphenoid of the snakelike lizard Bachia bicolor.

We studied the morphology of the chondrocranial orbitotemporal region in the snakelike gymnophthalmid lizard Bachia bicolor and its relation to other structures such as the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve and eye muscles, to show its particular morphology, and discuss the homology of some skeletal structures relative to other squamates. We used three-dimensional computer reconstructions from serial histological sections; additionally we studied the embryonic and postembryonic development of the orbitosphenoid bone using cleared and double-stained whole-mount skeletal material. Envenomation by the Mexican beaded lizard: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Envenomations by venomous lizards are rare. A single report of envenomation by a Mexican beaded lizard (Heloderma horridum) has been published. Further, anaphylaxis secondary to lizard envenomation has only been reported with the Gila monster. We report an envenomation that resulted in both systemic toxicity and anaphylaxis. CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old male was bitten on his hand by a captive Mexican beaded lizard. The patient experienced severe local pain, dizziness, vomiting, and diaphoresis. Upon arrival to the hospital, he was lethargic, vomiting, and in severe pain with marked

Evidence that the lizard helospectin peptides are O-glycosylated.

Six forms of helospectin (a vasoactive intestinal peptide analogue) were purified from the venom of the Heloderma horridum lizard. Their identification was performed by combining sequencing by automated Edman degradation and electrospray mass spectrometry analysis on the complete peptides and their tryptic fragments. The products resulting from the action of an O-glycosidase were also analysed. Two forms were identified as the previously named Hs1 and Hs2 of 38 and 37 amino-acid residues, respectively. Two forms corresponded to Hs1 and Hs2 O-glycosylated by a N-acetylhexosamine-hexose motif at

Sexual dimorphisms in the brainstem of the green anole lizard.

Male green anoles (Anolis carolinensis) court females by extending a bright red throat fan, called a dewlap. The dewlap is larger in males than in females who do not display the structure in the context of courtship. The ceratohyoid muscle and second ceratobranchial cartilage which control dewlap extension are significantly larger in male than in female anoles. Neurons innervating the ceratohyoid muscle were retrogradely labeled by injecting the muscle with fast blue and were found to be located in the vagal portion of nucleus ambiguus (Amb X), as well as in the region containing the glossopha

[Allergic bronchial asthma caused by lizard scales].

A 23-year-old patient with chronic rhinitis suffered from attacks of asthma. We found positive reactions in the prick test and rubbing test to the scales of the lizard Egernia cunninghami and others, which the patient kept as house-pets at this time or earlier. The bronchial function test showed bronchial obstruction after the patient had been at home with the lizards.

A simple model of cochlear micromechanics in the mammal and lizard.

A model is presented which is a simple representation of cochlear micromechanics in the lizard and mammal. The model is a linear, time-invariant mechanical system, consisting of two coupled mechanical filters. It is capable of a sharply tuned first and second filter, consistent with the sharply tuned basilar membrane and auditory nerve fibers in the mammal. When parameters are adjusted for the alligator lizard (Gerrhonotus multicarinatus), the model generates a sharply tuned second filter without a sharply tuned first filter. In the alligator lizard, the auditory nerve fibers are sharply tuned

Widespread male-female expression imbalance of X-linked genes across phrynosomatid lizards.

Classic theory on sex chromosome evolution predicts that selection should restore ancestral diploid expression for hemizygous X-linked genes in males. However, this dosage compensation is often incomplete, leaving the X chromosome enriched for genes with female-biased expression. In this context, iguanian lizards are noteworthy among vertebrates because several species from separate families appear to exhibit both near-complete dosage compensation and male-female expression balance across their ancient, homologous X chromosomes. We tested for similar expression balance in a phrynosomatid iguan
