Dopamine and the dynamics of subthalamic and leg muscle activities in parkinsonian stepping.

Freezing of gait (FOG) is a devastating symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) often resulting in disabling falls and loss of independence. It affects half of patients, yet current therapeutic strategies are insufficient, and the underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigated beta oscillation dynamics in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) during different movement states (sitting, standing and stepping), while examining the effects of levodopa. Specifically, it aimed to identify pathological activity during stepping by analysing the relationship between the STN and leg

Neural dynamics of addiction memory retrieval: prelimbic-VTA local field potential power and coherence during morphine seeking reinstatement.

Relapse to opioid use, driven by the retrieval of powerful drug-associated memories, remains a major clinical obstacle. The neurophysiological mechanisms within the prelimbic cortex (PrL)-ventral tegmental area (VTA) circuit that govern this reinstatement of drug-seeking are poorly defined. This study aimed to identify the specific electrophysiological signatures of morphine-primed reinstatement by analyzing local field potential (LFP) activity and PrL-VTA coherence in a rat model of conditioned place preference (CPP). Following conditioning, morphine-treated rats exhibited decreased beta powe

Word onset tracking in neural responses of human basal ganglia nuclei.

Auditory speech is a highly relevant ecological stimulus with intrinsic temporal dynamics. At the cortical level, it is well established that neural responses contain information about the temporal dynamics of speech. Previous research further suggests that the basal ganglia also play a role in temporal processing. However, it is unknown whether neural responses in basal ganglia structures contain information about temporal speech structure. To address this question, we recorded local field potentials from the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and the globus pallidus internus (GPi) through contacts of

Acute pain drives different effects on local and global cortical excitability in motor and prefrontal areas: insights into interregional and interpersonal differences in pain processing.

Pain-related depression of corticomotor excitability has been explored using transcranial magnetic stimulation-elicited motor-evoked potentials. Transcranial magnetic stimulation-electroencephalography now enables non-motor area cortical excitability assessments, offering novel insights into cortical excitability changes during pain states. Here, pain-related cortical excitability changes were explored in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and primary motor cortex (M1). Cortical excitability was recorded in 24 healthy participants before (Baseline), during painful heat (Acute Pain), and non-no

Effects of bupivacaine and ropivacaine on field potential in rat hippocampal slices.

BACKGROUND: In spite of more than 20 yr of research, the mechanism whereby local anaesthetics act on the brain to mediate anaesthesia still remains unclear. Furthermore, the effect of local anaesthetics on neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission in the hippocampus has not been reported. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to find out the differences between the local anaesthetics, bupivacaine and ropivacaine, in their actions on synaptic transmission of brain in the context of hippocampal field potential. METHODS: Brains were removed from 3- to 4-week-old rats and transverse sl

Prediction of Three-Dimensional Ground Reaction Forces in the Golf Swing Using Wearable Inertial Measurement Units and Biomimetic Deep Learning Models.

Ground reaction force (GRF) is essential for maintaining dynamic stability and generating power during the golf swing. Traditional GRF assessment relies on force plates, limiting measurement to laboratory environments and restricting evaluation of natural, field-based performance. Recent work has explored wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) and data-driven models to estimate GRF during simple locomotor tasks, yet no study has examined whether coupled lower-limb kinematics can predict three-dimensional GRF during complex, high-speed movements such as the golf swing. This study collected

[Development of in vivo drug sensing system with needle-type diamond microelectrode].

Continuous and real-time measurement of local concentrations of systemically administered drugs in vivo must be crucial for pharmacological studies. Nevertheless, conventional methods require considerable samples quantity and have poor sampling rates. Additionally, they cannot determine how drug kinetics correlates with target function over time. Here, we describe a system with two different sensors. One is a needle-type microsensor composed of boron-doped diamond with a tip of ~40 μm in diameter, and the other is a glass microelectrode. We first tested bumetanide. This diuretic can induce dea

High-resolution EEG source localization in personalized segmentation-free head model with multi-dipole fitting.

Objective. Electroencephalograms (EEGs) are often used to monitor brain activity. Several source localization methods have been proposed to estimate the location of brain activity corresponding to EEG readings. However, only a few studies evaluated source localization accuracy from measured EEG using personalized head models in a millimeter resolution. In this study, based on a volume conductor analysis of a high-resolution personalized human head model constructed from magnetic resonance images, a finite difference method was used to solve the forward problem and to reconstruct the field dist

Strain-Engineered Lattice-Driven Chirality in CsPbBr3 Nanorods.

This work demonstrates intrinsic lattice-driven chirality in CsPbBr3 nanorods, arising from strain-induced octahedral distortion, and fundamentally distinct from chiral-ligand-induced or molecule-driven chirality reported in most halide perovskites. The highly quantum-confined nanorods exhibit exceptionally large lattice strain nearly an order of magnitude higher than in previously reported systems which acts as the primary driving force for breaking local inversion symmetry. This strain-mediated symmetry breaking gives rise to strong circular dichroism (CD), natural circular dichroism (NCD),

Dominant twin peaks: a novel conjecture for the pathophysiologic basis of tremor frequency and fluctuation time in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: With the commercial availability of deep brain stimulation neurostimulators and sensing leads capable of recording deep brain Local Field Potentials, researchers now commonly study the spectral characteristics of Local Field Potentials recorded from the subthalamic nucleus of patients with Parkinson's disease. Correlating subthalamic synchronized oscillatory activity with motor impairment in Parkinson's disease patients has recently gained attention in the literature. OBJECTIVE: Based on the deep brain recordings of a Parkinson's disease patient our objective is to (i) Use actual

[Seasonal variation of total gaseous mercury in Changbai Mountain area].

An intensive field campaign monitoring was conducted from August 2005 to July 2006 using the automatic atmospheric mercury analyzers for one year' s measurement of total gaseous mercury (TGM) in Changbai Mountain area. Results show the mean concentration of TGM is (3.22 +/- 1.78) ng x m(-3) and it presents seasonal variation as followings: winter > spring > autumn > summer. Given the background concentration of atmospheric mercury in the Northern Hemisphere, mercury concentrations are totally elevated in Changbai Mountain area. The regional source of mercury in the atmosphere seems to be anthr

Feasibility of Basal Ganglia Microelectrode Recordings under General Anesthesia with Combined Nitrous Oxide and Sevoflurane: A Retrospective Single-Center Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD). The traditional method for accurate implantation is awake microelectrode recordings (MERs) to map out the borders of the target nucleus. However, a significant portion of patients are unable to tolerate awake surgical procedures. Asleep MER techniques under different general anesthesia regimens have been described with variable effects on recording quality and required a lower inhaled sevoflurane level to obtain single unit recordings. Hence, a reliable method for asleep MER mapping is needed w

Electroencephalographic decoding of sound location: Comparing free-field to headphone-based non-individual head-related transfer functions.

Sound source localization relies on spatial cues, such as interaural time differences, interaural level differences, and monaural spectral cues. Individually measured head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) facilitate precise spatial hearing but are impractical to measure, necessitating non-individual HRTFs, which may compromise localization accuracy and externalization. To further investigate this phenomenon, the neurophysiological differences between free-field and non-individual HRTF listening are explored by decoding sound locations from EEG-derived event-related potentials. Multipolar Electrograms: A New Configuration That Increases the Measurement Accuracy of Intracardiac Signals.

BACKGROUND: Accurate measurements of intracardiac electrograms (EGMs) remain a clinical challenge because of the suboptimal attenuation of far-field potentials. Multielectrode mapping catheters provide an opportunity to construct multipolar instead of bipolar EGMs for rejecting common far-field potentials recorded from a multivectorial space. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to develop a multipolar EGM and compare its characteristics to those of bipolar EGMs METHODS: Using a 36-electrode array catheter (Optrell-36, Biosense Webster), a far-field component was mathematically construct

Novel "late potential map" algorithm: Abnormal potentials and scar channels detection for ventricular tachycardia ablation.

BACKGROUND: Automated systems for substrate mapping in the context of ventricular tachycardia (VT) ablation may annotate far-field rather than near-field signals, rendering the resulting maps hard to interpret. Additionally, quantitative assessment of local conduction velocity (LCV) remains an unmet need in clinical practice. We evaluate whether a new late potential map (LPM) algorithm can provide an automatic and reliable annotation and localized bipolar voltage measurement of ventricular electrograms (EGMs) and if LCV analysis allows recognizing intrascar conduction corridors acting as VT is

Analytical Solution for the Potential Distribution in the Channel of A Graphene Field-Effect Transistor Validated with a Custom-Fabricated Test Platform.

A comprehensive analytical framework for computing the potential distribution in graphene-based field-effect transistors (GFETs) is presented. The work introduces a pioneering set of self-consistent and explicit closed-form expressions that enable an accurate description of the internal potential profiles along the graphene channel. The proposed models are experimentally validated using a custom-fabricated test platform based on global back-gated GFETs incorporating two in-channel terminals, which allow direct measurement of the local potential drop at different channel positions and provide u

Nanoscale Imaging of Magnetotransport around a Circular p-n Junction in Graphene.

Magnetoresistance studies of 2D systems are often shaped by the motion of electrons that occupy spatially confined wave functions, such as topological edge modes and disorder-induced bound states. Directly probing how such states form and behave in situ, under applied currents, provides a clear way of connecting microscopic physics to the macroscopic transport response. In this Letter, scanning tunneling potentiometry is used to probe the local, current-induced electrochemical potential of carriers in graphene near circular p-n junctions in an out-of-plane magnetic field ranging from 0 to 1.4

Ultrafast line-field holographic elastography with single excitation for corneal biomechanical characterization.

Elastography has become an essential tool for assessing tissue biomechanics, in particular for the diagnosis and treatment of keratoconus. For in vivo measurements, high-speed imaging and reduced stimulation are crucial. In this study, we introduce a line-field holographic elastography (LF-HE), which employs line-focus illumination and parallel acquisition to achieve ultra-fast measurement in 14 ms with single excitation. A novel data processing method combining the short time Fourier transform, the phase-resolved color Doppler and full width at half maximum algorithms is proposed to extract t

Transmission Potential of Floridian Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes for Dengue Virus Serotype 4: Implications for Estimating Local Dengue Risk.

Dengue virus serotype 4 (DENV-4) circulated in Aedes aegypti in 2016 and 2017 in Florida in the absence of human index cases, compelling a full assessment of local mosquito vector competence and DENV-4 risk. To better understand DENV-4 transmission risk in Florida, we used an expanded suite of tests to measure and compare the vector competencies of both an established colony of A. aegypti (Orlando strain [ORL]) and a field-derived colony from Collier County, FL, in 2018 (COL) for a Haitian DENV-4 human field isolate and a DENV-4 laboratory strain (Philippines H241). We immediately noted that O
