Amputee perception of prosthetic ankle stiffness during locomotion.

BACKGROUND: Prosthetic feet are spring-like, and their stiffness critically affects the wearer's stability, comfort, and energetic cost of walking. Despite the importance of stiffness in ambulation, the prescription process often entails testing a limited number of prostheses, which may result in patients receiving a foot with suboptimal mechanics. To understand the resolution with which prostheses should be individually optimized, we sought to characterize below-knee prosthesis users' psychophysical sensitivity to prosthesis stiffness. METHODS: We used a novel variable-stiffness ankle prosth

Analyzing locomotion synthesis with feature-based motion graphs.

We propose feature-based motion graphs for realistic locomotion synthesis among obstacles. Among several advantages, feature-based motion graphs achieve improved results in search queries, eliminate the need of postprocessing for foot skating removal, and reduce the computational requirements in comparison to traditional motion graphs. Our contributions are threefold. First, we show that choosing transitions based on relevant features significantly reduces graph construction time and leads to improved search performances. Second, we employ a fast channel search method that confines the motion

Endogenous neurotensin attenuates dopamine-dependent locomotion and stereotypy.

The neuropeptide neurotensin (NT) is highly sensitive to changes in dopaminergic signaling in the striatum, and is thought to modulate dopamine-mediated behaviors. To explore the interaction of NT with the dopamine system, we utilized mice with a targeted deletion of dopamine synthesis specifically in dopaminergic neurons. Dopamine levels in dopamine-deficient (DD) mice are less than 1% of control mice, and they require daily administration of the dopamine precursor L-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) for survival. DD mice are supersensitive to the effects of dopamine, becoming hyperactive relat

Vibration-induced changes in EMG during human locomotion.

The present study was set up to examine the contribution of Ia afferent input in the generation of electromyographic (EMG) activity. Subjects walked blindfolded along a walkway while tendon vibration was applied continuously to a leg muscle. The effects of vibration were measured on mean EMG activity in stance and swing phase. The results show that vibration of the quadriceps femoris (Q) at the knee and of biceps femoris (BF) at the knee enhanced the EMG activity of these muscles and this occurred mainly in the stance phase of walking. These results suggest involvement of Ia afferent input of

Development of anuran locomotion: ethological and neurophysiological considerations.

There are dramatic quantitative and qualitative differences in the locomotor behavior of larval and juvenile frogs. Larvae (tadpoles) are primarily herbivourous and rely heavily on locomotion via undulations to acquire food and avoid predation. After metamorphosis, juvenile frogs adopt a carnivorous lifestyle and capture prey and avoid predators by remaining motionless in a place of concealment. When they must move, frogs locomote by means of ballistic hops or by more conventional walking. However, locomotion of both tadpoles and frogs can be considered of two fundamental functional types: (a)

Toward the locomotion of two contemporaneous Adapis species.

The morphological differences between the limb bones of two Adapis species from two localities in Southern France are analyzed for their functional significance. The study focuses on the distal humerus, proximal femur, astragalus and calcaneum. The Escamps species Adapis aff. betillei shows more extreme flexion at the elbow, lateral mobility at the hip, and more rotation at the calcaneocuboid joint than in the other species. The species from Rosières 2 A. cf. parisiensis shows increased emphasis on parasagittal movements, restrictions of lateral mobility in the hindlimb, enhanced capacity for

Performance of the human vestibuloocular reflex during locomotion.

1. The stability of gaze was measured in nine normal subjects during 30-s epochs of standing, walking in place, and running in place. The angle of gaze and head rotations in horizontal and vertical planes were measured using the magnetic search coil technique. Subjects visually fixed on a stationary object located at a distance of 100 m; thus measurements of gaze indicated the stability of images on the retina. 2. During standing, walking, or running in place, the standard deviation of the angle of gaze was less than 0.4 degrees, both horizontally and vertically. During standing and walking in

Validity of power output estimation for wheelchair locomotion.

The purpose of this study was to validate an in-field method of estimating power output (PO) requirements for manual wheelchair (WC) locomotion. PO was calculated from the average force required to push a WC and its occupant over level tile and low pile carpeted surfaces multiplied by the locomotive velocity (3 km.hr-1). Average pushing force was determined by a strain-gauge transducer and an electronic integrator. Ten male volunteers (wt in WC = 73 -96 kg) were found to require PO levels ranging from 38 to 63 kpm.h4-1 and 98 to 135 kpm.min-1 for WC locomotion on the tiled and carpeted surface

Photoactuated Micropumps Enable Oscillatory Fluidics and Autonomous Locomotion.

Oscillatory fluid flows underpin transport, mixing, and signal propagation in living systems, yet artificial microfluidic platforms rely almost extensively on external power or chemically driven gradients to reproduce such dynamics. Here, we introduce a fuel-free strategy based on photo-mechanical transduction, in which light is directly converted into mechanical deformation of soft matter to generate reversible and oscillatory fluid flow without gradients. We demonstrated that azobenzene-doped liquid crystal films convert photochemical isomerization into amplified contractile-expansive motion

Movement-related increases in subthalamic activity optimize locomotion.

The subthalamic nucleus (STN) is traditionally thought to restrict movement. Lesion or prolonged STN inhibition increases movement vigor and propensity, while ontogenetic excitation typically has opposing effects. Subthalamic and motor activity are also inversely correlated in movement disorders. However, most STN neurons exhibit movement-related increases in firing. To address this paradox, STN activity was recorded and manipulated in head-fixed mice at rest and during self-initiated treadmill locomotion. The majority of STN neurons (type 1) exhibited locomotion-dependent increases in activit

Modular soft pneumatic actuator mimics elephant trunk locomotion.

Robots support and facilitate tasks in all life fields. Soft robots specifically have the advantages of inherent compliance, safe interaction and flexible deformability. Soft pneumatic network (Pneu-Net) is a soft pneumatic actuator (SPA) composed of network of chambers that is actuated by pneumatic power. Soft Pneu-Net fits the human interface applications perfectly. In this paper, a bio-inspired modular based design for Pneu-Net actuator is developed. The actuator mimics the elephant trunk curling to be employed for rehabilitation of human hand fingers. The actuator is an integrated four Pne

Forelimb position affects facultative bipedal locomotion in lizards.

Recent work indicates that bipedal posture in lizards is advantageous during obstacle negotiation. However, little is known about how bipedalism occurs beyond a lizard's acceleratory threshold. Furthermore, no study to date has examined the effects of forelimb position on the body center of mass (BCoM) in the context of bipedalism. This study quantified the frequency of bipedalism when sprinting with versus without an obstacle at 0.8 m from the start of a sprint. Forelimb positions were quantified during bipedal running at the start of a sprint and when crossing an obstacle. Two species with c

Caterpillar Climbing: Robust, Tension-Based Omni-Directional Locomotion.

Animals that must transition from horizontal to inclined or vertical surfaces typically change their locomotion strategy to compensate for the relative shift in gravitational forces. The species that have been studied have stiff articulated skeletons that allow them to redistribute ground reaction forces (GRFs) to control traction. Most also change their stepping patterns to maintain stability as they climb. In contrast, caterpillars, most of which are highly scansorial, soft-bodied, and lack rigid support or joints, can move with the same general kinematics in all orientations. In this study,

Dedicated Hippocampal Inhibitory Networks for Locomotion and Immobility.

Network activity is strongly tied to animal movement; however, hippocampal circuits selectively engaged during locomotion or immobility remain poorly characterized. Here we examined whether distinct locomotor states are encoded differentially in genetically defined classes of hippocampal interneurons. To characterize the relationship between interneuron activity and movement, we used in vivo, two-photon calcium imaging in CA1 of male and female mice, as animals performed a virtual-reality (VR) track running task. We found that activity in most somatostatin-expressing and parvalbumin-expressing

Human locomotion and heat loss: an evolutionary perspective.

Humans are unique in many respects including being furless, striding bipeds that excel at walking and running long distances in hot conditions. This review summarizes what we do and do not know about the evolution of these characteristics, and how they are related. Although many details remain poorly known, the first hominins (species more closely related to humans than to chimpanzees) apparently diverged from the chimpanzee lineage because of selection for bipedal walking, probably because it improved their ability to forage efficiently. However, because bipedal hominins are necessarily slow

Variability in human locomotion: are repeat trials necessary?

This study proposed to determine the extent to which multiple gait trials provide further information than that obtained from a single trial of walking. Gait data were collected using a video camera and force platform system on 10 subjects including a below knee amputee. The data supported several conclusions. If the purpose of gait research is to investigate and detail the kinematic and kinetic patterns of individual subjects, either during a single data collection session or across several sessions, then recording a single stride of normal gait per subject can be justified. However, if the p

Locomotion, active choice, and spatial memory in children.

In two studies, children between 4 and 6 years old were tested on a radial search task requiring nonredundant sampling of eight identically labeled positions in a room. In the training phase (5 days), children made free choices by walking between positions, were passively transported in a pushchair, actively directed their own route from a pushchair, or were led on foot to positions selected by the experimenter. When tested (whether walking or directing while seated in a pushchair), children who had either walked independently or directed the experimenter while being pushed performed competent
