Neozygites abacaridis sp. nov. (Entomophthorales), a new pathogen of phytophagous mites (Acari, Eriophyidae).

A new entomopathogenic fungus, described here as Neozygites abacaridis n. sp. (Zygomycetes: Entomophthorales), has been found on the mites Abacarus hystrix, Aculodes dubius, and A. mckenziei (Acari: Eriophyidae). It differs from other Neozygites species affecting mites by its small, globose primary conidia, short-ovoid, smoky coloured capilliconidia, and very short capillary conidiophores-which are usually not longer than the spore length. This pathogen infected mite individuals in autumn (from mid-August until mid-November) on Lolium perenne, Agrostis stolonifera, and Festuca rubra. It caused

Combined magnetic biochar and ryegrass enhanced the remediation effect of soils contaminated with multiple heavy metals.

Biochar is a very promising material for soil remediation. However, most studies mainly focus on the adsorption ability of biochar on one heavy metal, which is difficult to evaluate the actual remediation effect since soils were contaminated with multiple heavy metals. In order to improve the soil remediation efficiency, we used the joint remediation method of magnetically modified biochar and ryegrass to remediate the soil polluted by compound heavy metals (chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, arsenic and cadmium), and evaluate the effect on the process of organic carbon mineralization in polluted

[Mn/Al-layered Double Oxide-loaded Biochar Reduced the Toxic Effects of Heavy Metals on Ryegrass in Soil].

The combined pollution of heavy metal Cu and Cd in soil induced by the e-waste dismantling process has become a severe problem. To deal with this issue, crab shell biochar (BC) and Mn/Al-layered double oxide-loaded crab shell biochar (LDO/BC) were prepared using coprecipitation and co-pyrolysis of discarded crab shells and manganese aluminum salt. The experimental results showed that not only were the soil pH, available phosphorus, available potassium, and soil enzymatic activity enhanced, but the contents of DTPA-Cu and DTPA-Cd in the soil were also reduced after remediation by BC and LDO/BC.

Postural and gait abnormalities in a group of Romney lambs due to pain induced by severe chronic cutaneous dermatophilosis.

CASE HISTORY: Fifteen lambs from a flock of 1,000, 5-month-old Romney lambs in the Manawatū region of New Zealand, developed unusual postural and gait abnormalities during the summer of 2020. In mid-January, the lambs were grazing a raphanobrassica crop (xRaphanobrassica; Brassica oleracea x Raphanus sativus) but were removed from this crop soon after as they developed dermal lesions on the pinnae consistent with photosensitisation (colloquially known as "rape scald"). The lambs were placed onto a shaded paddock containing a pasture of predominantly perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and whit

Pistachio nut hypersensitivity: identification of pistachio nut allergens.

Type I hypersensitivity to pistachio nut antigens was demonstrated in three patients by means of immediate skin-test reactivity, specific IgE determination by a fluoroimmunoassay (CAP), CAP-inhibition and leucocyte histamine release. Sensitization to other dried fruits and pollens was observed in the patients. The CAP-inhibition studies revealed significant crossreactivity between pistachio and cashew nut belonging to the Anacardiaceae family, and between pistachio nut and other dried fruits belonging to taxonomically unrelated botanical families. No relevant crossallergenicity was observed be

Improving the Activity of Aminophenoxazinones: Synthesis, CPC Purification, and Phytotoxicity Potential.

Aminophenoxazinones (APOs) are potent phytotoxic metabolites and histone deacetylase inhibitors, offering a low-resistance bioherbicide profile. This research synthesized a library of APO derivatives with targeted modifications to optimize physicochemical properties and biological activity using oxidative cyclocondensation. Purification challenges from strong compound-solid phase interactions were overcome by using centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC). Phytotoxicity was screened against Lolium rigidum, Portulaca oleracea, and Plantago lanceolata. While germination remained largely unaffe

N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) exposure produces rapid and permanent damage in turfgrass.

Despite anecdotal evidence that suggests bug sprays containing N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) damage turfgrasses, there is minimal peer-reviewed research investigating this in detail. The aims of the present study were to determine whether it is the DEET or the carrier solvent in bug sprays, ethanol, that damages turfgrasses, quantify the level of damage, and establish whether turfgrasses treated with DEET would recover in both indoor and outdoor environments. In a controlled, indoor environment, directly spraying DEET solutions on perennial ryegrass damaged leaves in a dose-dependent manne

Effect of composite amendments on physicochemical properties of copper tailings repaired by herbaceous plants.

Phytoremediation is considered to be the most environmentally friendly green restoration technology for dealing with mine waste. Adding amendments can improve the substrate environment for plant growth and enhance remediation efficiency. Herbaceous plants have become the preferred species for vegetation restoration in abandoned mines because of their fast greening and simple management. After 8 weeks of pot experiments in the early stage, it was shown that the plant height and fresh weight of the plants treated with 5% conditioner and 0.5% straw (C2S2) were significantly higher than those of o

Metal immobilization and nitrate reduction in a contaminated soil amended with zero-valent iron (Fe0).

Technologies based on zero-valent iron (Fe0) are increasingly being used to immobilize metals in soils and remove metals and nitrate from waters. However, the impact of nitrate reduction on metal immobilization in metal contaminated soils has been poorly investigated so far. Here, different concentrations of Fe0 filings (1%, 2% and 5%; wt%) were applied to a metal contaminated soil. The resulting nitrate reduction and metal (Cd and Zn) immobilization was investigated using a column leaching experiment for 12 weeks. Corrosion of Fe0 filings and precipitation of Fe oxyhydroxydes (FeOOH) on the s

Comparative characterization of bacterial communities in geese consuming of different proportions of ryegrass.

Geese are extremely well-adapted to utilizing plant-derived roughage in their diet, so the grass must be added to commercial diets under intensive rearing systems. However, it is unclear whether the gut microbiota will change significantly when adding different proportions of ryegrass. In this study, 240 healthy male Yangzhou geese (28 days old) with similar body weights were randomly divided into four groups and fed different proportions grass (CK, whole commercial diets; EG1, ryegrass: commercial diets = 1.5:1; EG2, ryegrass: commercial diets = 2:1; EG3, ryegrass: commercial diets = 3:1) res

Large particle breakdown by cattle eating ryegrass and alfalfa.

The proportion of large particles (LP) broken down to small, insoluble particles by primary mastication (eating), rumination, digestion and detrition (rubbing) was determined for separated leaf and stem fractions of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa) fed to cattle cannulated at the esophagus. Large particles were defined as those particles retained during wet sieving on a screen with an aperture of 1.18 mm. Reduction in weight of particles caused by solubilizing or digestion was not considered to be particle breakdown per se, and particles were corrected for this

[Remediation Mechanism of Chitosan-modified Biochar on Cd-contaminated Farmland Soil and Its Effect on Bacterial Community].

To explore the remediation mechanism of chitosan-modified biochar (passivator) on Cd-contaminated farmland soil, pot experiments were conducted to determine the effects of passivator on soil physical and chemical properties, ryegrass biomass, enzyme activity, and the response of soil bacterial diversity and structure. The results showed that when the amount of passivating agent was increased from 0.5% to 3%, the content of available Cd in soil was significantly decreased compared with that in the control, and the above-ground and subsurface biomass of ryegrass was increased by 1.08-1.56 times

Aging effects on cobalt availability in soils.

Aging processes in soils can significantly affect the potential biological availability of introduced metals via incorporation into crystal lattices, diffusion into micropores, or formation of metal precipitates on the surfaces of soil minerals. Over time, metals in contact with the soil solid phase are less freely exchangeable with the soil solution and, hence, less available to soil biota. In the present study, the effects of aging on the fate and behavior of added divalent cobalt (Co2+) in a range of soils with varying physicochemical characteristics was assessed using isotope-exchange tech

Changing the grazing session from morning to afternoon or including tannins in the diet was effective in decreasing the urinary nitrogen of dairy cows fed a total mixed ration and herbage.

Our aim was to evaluate whether increasing soluble carbohydrates in the herbage by changing the time of the grazing session or including Acacia mearnsii tannin in the diet would affect intake, digestion, N partitioning, and productive performance of dairy cows fed a diet combining ryegrass herbage with partial total mixed ration (PMR). We hypothesized that both strategies could reduce the concentration of NH3-N in the rumen, reducing urinary N excretion. Nine Holstein cows were used in a triplicate 3 × 3 Latin square experiment with 3 experimental periods of 22 d. The cows were fed a fixed amo

Wheat and ryegrass biomass ashes as effective sorbents for metallic and organic pollutants from contaminated water in lab-engineered cartridge filtration system.

Three plant biomasses (miscanthus, ryegrass and wheat) have been considered for the preparation of five different sorbents evaluated for their potential to sorb cadmium and lead and four emergent organic compounds (diclofenac, sulfamethoxazole, 17α-ethynylestradiol and triclosan) from artificially contaminated water. Lab-created cartridges were filled with each sorbent and all experiments were systematically compared to activated charcoal Norit®. Results from activated charcoal, wheat straw and acidified wheat straw were supported by the Langmuir and Freundlich models. Wheat straw ashes were a

Passive samplers provide a better prediction of PAH bioaccumulation in earthworms and plant roots than exhaustive, mild solvent, and cyclodextrin extractions.

A number of extraction methods have been developed to assess polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) bioavailability in soils. As these methods are rarely tested in a comparative manner, against different test organisms, and using field-contaminated soils, it is unclear which method gives the most accurate measure of the actual soil ecosystem exposure. In this study, PAH bioavailability was assessed in ten field-contaminated soils by using exhaustive acetone/hexane extractions, mild solvent (butanol) extractions, cyclodextrin extractions, and two passive sampling methods; solid phase micro extra

[Exogenous Spermidine Regulates Ryegrass Root System Response to Cd Stress and Its Transcriptome Analysis].

The application of exogenous growth-regulating substances is an effective technique to enhance plant stress tolerance. Here, a hydroponic experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of exogenous basal application of 0.1 mmol·L-1 spermidine (Spd) on both the physiology and molecular biology of ryegrass root systems under varying degrees (0, 5, and 10 mg·L-1) of cadmium (Cd) stress using ryegrass as the test plants. The results of physiological studies revealed that Cd stress significantly reduced the physiological functions of the ryegrass root system, whereas the addition of Spd effect

A comparison of two rotational stocking strategies on the foraging behaviour and herbage intake by grazing sheep.

An understanding of the processes involved in grazing behaviour is a prerequisite for the design of efficient grassland management systems. The purpose of managing the grazing process is to identify sward structures that can maximize animal forage daily intake and optimize grazing time. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of different grazing management strategies on foraging behaviour and herbage intake by sheep grazing Italian ryegrass under rotational stocking. The experiment was carried out in 2015 in southern Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with two grazing

Effect of biosolid incorporation to mollisol soils on Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn fractionation, and relationship with their bioavailability.

Biosolid application to soil may be a supply of nutrients and micronutrients but it may also accumulate toxic compounds which would be absorbed by crops and through them be incorporated to the trophic chain. The present study deals with the effect of biosolid application on Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, and Zn in agricultural soils. The procedure used is sequential extraction so that the availability of those metals may be estimated and related to their bioavailability as determined through two indicator plants grown in greenhouse: ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and red clover (Trifolium pratense). Impact of vineyard inter-row cover crops on soil organic carbon fractions.

The dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions and accumulation under inter-row cover cropping serve as fundamental determinants of soil carbon pool stability and sustainable vineyard management. We conducted an experiment with three inter-row cover crop treatments, including Vicia villosa (MS), Lolium perenne (HM), and natural grass cover (ZR), in the vineyard from 2022 to 2024, and taking clean tillage (CK) as the control, to determine the soil organic carbon fractions, physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and the relationships between soil properties and organic carbon fracti
