The aim of the study was to examine the prevalence and self-reported causes of loneliness among Finnish older population. The data were collected with a postal questionnaire from a random sample of 6,786 elderly people (>or=75 years of age). The response rate was 71.8% from community-dwelling sample. Of the respondents, 39% suffered from loneliness, 5% often or always. Loneliness was more common among rural elderly people than those living in cities. It was associated with advancing age, living alone or in a residential home, widowhood, low level of education and poor income. In addition, poor

Although loneliness is often viewed as a serious problem of old age, few studies have addressed either its measurement or prevalence among older populations. The present study analyzed survey data from newspaper questionnaires circulated in three North American cities (N = 2,026) in order to examine the prevalence of loneliness across the life-span and some of its correlates in late life. Loneliness decreased across the adult life-span, with respondents age 65 and older the least lonely; elders were also more satisfied with their social relationships. Neither gender nor living alone was relate

Loneliness and social isolation are important public health concerns due to their associations with a range of health outcomes. However, it is difficult to ascertain whether any effects are biased by confounding and reverse causation. We use a triangulation approach combining observational, sibling control, and Mendelian Randomisation analyses (a genetically informed analysis), to draw robust conclusions about these relationships. Using a combination of UK Biobank data (N = 8,004 to 414,432) and genome-wide association studies (N = 17,526 to 2,083,151), we examine relationships between lonelin

Social isolation and loneliness are significant risks to health among older adults. Previous studies have found a significant association between social isolation and loneliness; however, few studies examined the association between social isolation and loneliness in a multivariate context and how specific types of social isolation influence loneliness. This study fills this gap by examining social isolation's overall influence on loneliness and how specific social isolation indicators influence loneliness. Data comes from 2014 Wave of the Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representati

505 elderly people in Auckland, New Zealand were administered state and trait versions of the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale, Version 3, and a battery of psychosocial and health measures. The Pearson correlation for scores on the loneliness measures was .86. Neither age nor gender was predictive of state or trait loneliness scores. Less education, insufficient income, and living alone were predictive of state but not trait loneliness. Having experienced the death of a spouse within the past year was predictive of trait but not state loneliness. The predictive variance for all health outcome var

IMPORTANCE: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a severe early-life trauma with well-established psychiatric sequelae. Prior studies have been limited by nonrepresentative samples, broad adversity measures, and a lack of dose-response characterization or formal effect modification testing in contemporary US populations.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between prior CSA and adult loneliness and whether this association varies by sex, race and ethnicity, and age group.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used data on 53 444 adults from the 2023-2024 Behavioral Risk

BACKGROUND: Loneliness in older adults is a critical public health issue with dynamic changes over time. Understanding its longitudinal patterns is vital for identifying high-risk individuals and developing timely interventions. This review synthesizes evidence on loneliness trajectories, their predictors, and associated health outcomes in older populations.
METHODS: A systematic search across nine databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PsycINFO, CNKI, VIP, Wanfang) was conducted from inception to December 1, 2024, updated on August 18, 2025, focusing on longitud

PURPOSE: Social adversity-including poverty, trauma, and other adverse life experiences-is associated with higher risk of psychosis and poorer outcomes in schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Loneliness, the subjective experience of social disconnection, is also prevalent among people with psychosis; however, the extent to which social adversity contributes to loneliness in people with psychosis is relatively unknown.
METHODS: In the current study, we developed a measurement model of social adversity and assessed associations with loneliness in 404 participants with First Episode Psychosis (FEP)

Addressing loneliness is a global public health priority; however, its complexity necessitates collaboration across multiple sectors. Intersectoral collaborations (ISCs) connect diverse stakeholders to take collective action on social issues. In 2022, Women's Age Lab formed an ISC to address loneliness in older adults in Canada, comprising national, provincial and local organizations. The ISC identified stigma, system fragmentation and ineffective solutions as challenges to addressing loneliness. Mapping existing initiatives, advocating for a national strategy and prioritizing research were di

OBJECTIVE: In elderly people loneliness represents a risk factor for dementia and may negatively impact on mental and physical health. The specific contribute of loneliness to cognitive and behavioral functioning have not yet been determined in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Our hypothesis was that loneliness may be related to motor dysfunction with a negative impact on cognitive and behavioral decline, possibly related to specific cortical involvement.
METHODS: In 200 ALS patients (ALSpts) and 50 healthy controls (HCs) we measured loneliness, mood, and quality of life (QoL). ALSpts und

The human phenomenon of loneliness has been increasing in prominence across societies, with precipitous increase since COVID-19, and individuals with Parkinson's disease are not unscathed. Loneliness is of clinical relevance as it is cross-sectionally related to, and longitudinally precedes, mortality and other health risks, including worse motor, cognitive, and behavioral-psychological functioning. Relatively few studies have evaluated loneliness, or associated social experiences, in the context of Parkinson's, but the existing data is provocative. The authors advocate for clinicians' awarene

There is considerable empirical evidence that unequivocally points to loneliness as a modifiable risk factor for the development of Alzheimer's disease and other related dementias. With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting lockdown and social distancing, there has been a renewed interest in studying this topic. The present review examines the links between loneliness and Alzheimer's disease, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms common to both conditions.

BACKGROUND: There is an international trend for frail older adults to move to residential care homes, rather than ageing at home. Residential facilities typically espouse a person-centred philosophy, yet evidence points to restrictive policies and surveillance resulting in increased loneliness and diminished opportunities for intimacy and sexual expression. Residents may experience what has been termed social death, rather than perceive they are related to by others as socially alive.
AIM: To consider how the loss of intimacy and sexuality in residents' lives contributes to iatrogenic lonelin

Hallucinations occur along a continuum of normal functioning. Investigating the factors related to this experience in nonclinical individuals may offer important information for understanding the etiology of hallucinations in psychiatric populations. In this study we test the relationship between psychosis proneness, loneliness, and auditory hallucinations in a nonclinical sample using the White Christmas paradigm. Seventy-six undergraduate students participated in this study. We found that slightly more than half of our participants endorsed a hallucinatory experience during the White Christm

In the present study we examined loneliness among individuals with and without social anxiety disorder (SAD), contexts that may moderate the experience of loneliness, and the temporal relationship between loneliness and social anxiety. We examined 88 individuals (44 with SAD and 44 without SAD) and used experience sampling (ES) methods, comprising of real-time measurement of naturally occurring events and participants' emotional reactions to them during participants' daily lives over the course of 21 days. Hierarchical linear models indicated that individuals with SAD reported significantly mo

Loneliness is strongly linked to poor health. Recent research suggests that appetite dysregulation provides one potential pathway through which loneliness and other forms of social disconnection influence health. Obesity may alter the link between loneliness and appetite-relevant hormones, one unexplored possibility. We examined the relationships between loneliness and both postmeal ghrelin and hunger, and tested whether these links differed for people with a higher versus lower body mass index (BMI; kg/m(2)). During this double-blind randomized crossover study, women (N=42) ate a high saturat

This study investigated the relation between friendship, loneliness and depressive symptoms in adolescents with Asperger's Syndrome (AS). Thirty-five adolescents with AS and 35 controls matched on chronological age, school year and gender distribution, completed questionnaires designed to ascertain the quality of their best-friendship, motivation for developing friendships, feelings of loneliness and depressive symptomatology. Relative to the comparison group, the participants with AS reported poorer quality of best-friendship and less motivation to develop friendships. The individuals with AS

An 8-item loneliness scale was administered to a sample of high school students (N = 1,710) twice, about one year apart. The scale exhibited good internal consistency reliability (alphas of 0.78 and 0.79, respectively), was relatively independent of gender effects, and demonstrated evidence of construct validity. Factor analysis of the items yielded a two-factor solution which met methodological criteria, but over-all the data suggested a method artifact, e.g., positively and negatively worded items factored separately. Examination of the two factors indicated the subscale of four negative ite

This report contains a review of the literature about the interplay between loneliness and the abuse of alcohol. A theoretical discussion based on clinical observations can be dated back to the 1950's. Systematic empirical studies, however, appear sparsely and have mainly been performed during the last decade. Thus, knowledge is still incomplete, but the review indicates that loneliness may be significant at all stages in the course of alcoholism: as a contributing and maintaining factor in the growth of abuse and as an encumbrance in attempts to give it up. Concordant reports demonstrate that
