Partial volume correction in longitudinal tau PET studies: is it really needed?

BACKGROUND: [18F]flortaucipir (FTP) tau PET quantification is known to be affected by non-specific binding in off-target regions. Although partial volume correction (PVC) techniques partially account for this effect, their inclusion may also introduce noise and variability into the quantification process. While the impact of these effects has been studied in cross-sectional designs, the benefits and drawbacks of PVC on longitudinal FTP studies is still under scrutiny. The aim of this work was to study the performance of the most common PVC techniques for longitudinal FTP imaging. METHODS: A c

Longitudinal Studies of Wearables in Patients with Diabetes: Key Issues and Solutions.

Glucose monitoring is key to the management of diabetes mellitus to maintain optimal glucose control whilst avoiding hypoglycemia. Non-invasive continuous glucose monitoring techniques have evolved considerably to replace finger prick testing, but still require sensor insertion. Physiological variables, such as heart rate and pulse pressure, change with blood glucose, especially during hypoglycemia, and could be used to predict hypoglycemia. To validate this approach, clinical studies that contemporaneously acquire physiological and continuous glucose variables are required. In this work, we p

Strategies and foundations for scientific discovery in longitudinal studies of bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a complex and dynamic condition with a typical onset in late adolescence or early adulthood followed by an episodic course with intervening periods of subthreshold symptoms or euthymia. It is complicated by the accumulation of comorbid medical and psychiatric disorders. The etiology of BD remains unknown and no reliable biological markers have yet been identified. This is likely due to lack of comprehensive ontological framework and, most importantly, the fact that most studies have been based on small nonrepresentative clinical samples with cross-sectional designs. Risk factors for conduct disorder and delinquency: key findings from longitudinal studies.

Conduct disorder (CD) and delinquency are behavioural problems involving violation of major rules, societal norms, and laws. The prevalence of CD and delinquency peaks in mid-to-late adolescence. Both show considerable continuity over time. The most important studies of CD and delinquency have prospective longitudinal designs, large community samples, repeated personal interviews, measures of many possible risk factors, and both self-reports and official measures of antisocial behaviour. The most important risk factors that predict CD and delinquency include impulsiveness, low IQ and low schoo

Methodological issues in longitudinal studies: vestibular schwannoma growth rates in neurofibromatosis 2.

Four longitudinal studies of vestibular schwannoma (VS) growth rates in neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) have yielded very different results on the relationship of VS growth rates to age. The studies had different patient eligibility criteria, indices of VS growth rates, VS volumetric methods, and sample sizes. We reanalysed data from two of the longitudinal studies and used data from the population based United Kingdom NF2 Registry to determine the most likely reason for the different results and the actual relationship of VS growth rates to age. We found that the eligibility criterion in one study

PEFR in pregnancy: a longitudinal study.

Peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) were measured in 60 pregnant women aged 20-28 years (average 24 yrs) height between 130-160 cm (average 154.5 cm), each month beginning from 3rd month of gestation and also 8-10 weeks postpartum using, Wright's Peak Flow Meter. The PEFR declined from 329.12 +/- 4.40 lpm in 3rd month to 286.22 +/- 3.81 lpm in 9th month of gestation and increased to 347.86 +/- 2.93 lpm in postpartal period. A similar, declining trend is also observed in other Indian studies. However, the values are lower than those observed in Europeans. Also no change in PEFR during pregnancy w

Longitudinal study of essential tremor.

We measured wrist tremor and forearm EMG in 18 patients with essential tremor on two occasions separated by periods of 4 to 8 years. The frequency of tremor decreased 0.28 Hz to 3.21 Hz in 10 patients and changed less than 0.25 Hz in the remaining eight patients. Thus, the frequency of essential tremor may decrease over time.

Incontinentia pigmenti. A longitudinal study.

We describe 15 patients with incontinentia pigmenti whom we have followed up from two to 11 years. This longitudinal approach allowed us to observe the course of the skin lesions and developmental progress of these children. We found that in contrast to what has been previously reported in most of the literature, the bullous and verrucous lesions do not always resolve during the first or second year of life and may recur throughout childhood. Although most patients with incontinentia pigmenti are of normal intelligence, those with neonatal seizures have a poor prognosis for normal development.

Nightmares and Stress: A Longitudinal Study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: In nightmare etiology, trait and state factors play important roles. However, the interaction of state and trait factors has never been studied in a longitudinal design. METHODS: The current sample included 406 pregnant women who were followed up approximately 6 months after giving birth (n = 375) and 4 years later (n = 302). A nightmare frequency scale and several stress-related questionnaires were presented at three measurement points. RESULTS: Despite the major life events in this sample, nightmare frequency was very stable over this time period and decreased slightly. I

Longitudinal study of keratoconus progression.

To determine if differences in topographic progression between unaffected keratoconus relatives and normal controls can predict factors associated with the development of keratoconus in a longitudinal study. We recruited 369 unaffected keratoconus relatives and 119 normal controls in Los Angeles. Both eyes of subjects were examined at baseline clinically and by quantitative videokeratography and at a period ranging from 1 year to 8 years. Progression to keratoconus was evaluated by quantitative videokeratography variables. Unaffected relatives had higher Central K (CK), I-S and KISA values and

Cortical deafness: a longitudinal study.

We have studied a patient with MRI-confirmed bilateral absence of considerable portions of her temporal lobes resulting in cortical deafness. Although physiologic measures demonstrate normal peripheral hearing sensitivity, this patient's speech has the inflection and prosodic characteristics associated with profound peripheral hearing loss, and she is unable to understand spoken communication. Behaviorally obtained pure-tone thresholds taken over nearly 20 years range from normal to moderate hearing loss with normal middle ear muscle reflexes and normal ABRs; however, we consistently found abn

Local community identification improves wellbeing by reducing loneliness: Longitudinal evidence from two studies.

Loneliness is a significant determinant of mental and physical health which has many root causes at local community level. Building on the Social Identity Approach to Health we test a longitudinal version of McNamara et al.'s (2021) neighbourhood identity model of wellbeing, which links local community identification to wellbeing via reduced loneliness. Study 1 was a two-wave survey of residents in mid-Nottinghamshire, UK (T1 N = 879; T2 N = 216). Mediation analyses showed that, over a one-year period, changes in community identification predicted increases in wellbeing via increases in percei

Recovery After Nontraumatic Lower Limb Amputation: A Scoping Review of Longitudinal Research Studies.

OBJECTIVE: Longitudinal research studies are essential for understanding the time course of functional recovery after lower limb amputation (LLA). The purpose of this scoping review was to evaluate the existing evidence base regarding midterm to long-term outcomes following nontraumatic LLA. DATA SOURCES: A scoping review was conducted per the Joanna Briggs Institute and Open Science Framework guidelines. Based on purpose, 7 databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, SportDiscus, and Google Scholar) were searched for studies published between 2000 and 2024, in English, Mandari

The St. Göran Project: A Multipronged Strategy for Longitudinal Studies for Bipolar Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The St. Göran Bipolar Project (SBP) is a longitudinal outpatient study investigation aimed at identifying predictive factors associated with long-term outcomes in individuals with bipolar disorder. These outcomes include cognitive function, relapse rate, treatment responses, and functional outcomes. The study employs a multifaceted approach, integrating brain imaging, biochemical analyses of cerebrospinal fluid and blood, and genetics. This paper provides an overview of the research methods used in the SBP, along with a summary of the main findings to date. METHODS: SBP is a col

β-amyloid PET harmonisation across longitudinal studies: Application to AIBL, ADNI and OASIS3.

INTRODUCTION: The Centiloid scale was developed to harmonise the quantification of β-amyloid (Aβ) PET images across tracers, scanners, and processing pipelines. However, several groups have reported differences across tracers and scanners even after centiloid conversion. In this study, we aim to evaluate the impact of different pre and post-processing harmonisation steps on the robustness of longitudinal Centiloid data across three large international cohort studies. METHODS: All Aβ PET data in AIBL (N = 3315), ADNI (N = 3442) and OASIS3 (N = 1398) were quantified using the MRI-based Centiloi

Healthy lifestyle and the risk of Alzheimer dementia: Findings from 2 longitudinal studies.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the impact of a healthy lifestyle on the risk of Alzheimer dementia. METHODS: Using data from the Chicago Health and Aging Project (CHAP; n = 1,845) and the Rush Memory and Aging Project (MAP; n = 920), we defined a healthy lifestyle score on the basis of nonsmoking, ≥150 min/wk moderate/vigorous-intensity physical activity, light to moderate alcohol consumption, high-quality Mediterranean-DASH Diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay diet (upper 40%), and engagement in late-life cognitive activities (upper 40%), giving an overall score ranging from 0 to 5. A systematic review of studies probing longitudinal associations between anxiety and anorexia nervosa.

The current study aimed to establish whether anxiety predicts subsequent anorexia nervosa onset and maintenance. A systematic review of longitudinal studies assessing the association between stable anxiety exposures (e.g. trait anxiety/anxiety disorder pathology) and anorexia nervosa development or maintenance was undertaken. Eight studies met inclusion criteria. Seven probed the association between anxiety and anorexia nervosa onset, and one assessed the association between anxiety and anorexia nervosa maintenance. Individuals with anorexia nervosa were more likely to report childhood anxiety

The use of longitudinal cohorts for studies of dengue viral pathogenesis and protection.

In this review, we describe how longitudinal prospective community-based, school-based, and household-based cohort studies contribute to improving our knowledge of viral disease, focusing specifically on contributions to understanding and preventing dengue. We describe how longitudinal cohorts enable measurement of essential disease parameters and risk factors; provide insights into biological correlates of protection and disease risk; enable rapid application of novel biological and statistical technologies; lead to development of new interventions and inform vaccine trial design; serve as se
