Comparison of Four Radiographic Angular Measures of Lumbar Lordosis.

BACKGROUND: Several attempts (radiographic and nonradiographic) have been made to measure the lumbar lordosis (LL), but the results differ substantially as investigators have used different parameters. Radiography is the gold standard, and the methods include lumbosacral angle (LSA), lumbosacral joint angle (LSJA), Cobb angle, and tangential radiologic assessment of LL (TRALL) angle. The traditional method, the Cobb technique, has a wide range of normal mean values, with a large standard deviation. Using a more reliable radiographic angle will hopefully simply and standardize LL measurement in

A Japanese Stretching Intervention Can Modify Lumbar Lordosis Curvature.

STUDY DESIGN: Eighteen healthy male adults were assigned to either an intervention or control group. OBJECTIVES: Isogai dynamic therapy (IDT) is one of Japanese stretching interventions and has been practiced for over 70 years. However, its scientific quantitative evidence remains unestablished. The objective of this study was to determine whether IDT could modify lumbar curvature in healthy young adults compared with stretching exercises used currently in clinical practice. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: None of previous studies have provided data that conventional stretching interventions cou

Effect of total lumbar disc replacement on lumbosacral lordosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Original article OBJECTIVE: : To study effect of lumbar disc replacement on lumbosacral lordosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There has been a growing interest in total disc replacement (TDR) for back pain with the rising concern of adjacent segment degeneration. Lumbar fusion surgery has been shown to lead to decrease in lumbar lordosis, which may account for postfusion pain resulting in less acceptable clinical outcome after successful fusion. TDR has recently emerged as an alternative treatment for back pain. There have been very few studies reporting lumbar sagittal outcome

Velocity of lordosis angle during spinal flexion and extension.

The importance of functional parameters for evaluating the severity of low back pain is gaining clinical recognition, with evidence suggesting that the angular velocity of lordosis is critical for identification of musculoskeletal deficits. However, there is a lack of data regarding the range of functional kinematics (RoKs), particularly which include the changing shape and curvature of the spine. We address this deficit by characterising the angular velocity of lordosis throughout the thoracolumbar spine according to age and gender. The velocity of lumbar back shape changes was measured using

Lumbosacral lordosis in fetal spine: genetic or mechanic parameter.

Many believe that the fetus spine had only one curvature from cranial to caudal which is a global kyphosis and that the lumbosacral lordosis appears with the erect posture. They agree that the sacrum of Homo sapiens is not positioned posteriorly at birth and that it is during the first few years that the sacrum, in humans, moves dorsally in relation with the progressive acquisition of erect posture and the ontogeny of bipedal locomotion. Nevertheless, there is no biometric study assessing these parameters in vivo in utero during the fetal life. Cross-sectional biometric study of the lumbosacra

Supportive cushions produce no practical reduction in lumbar lordosis.

It is common practice to place a pillow or bolster under the knees of patients undergoing lumbar spine CT or MRI. The use of such supportive cushions leads to gentle hip flexion that is thought to ease pain and "reduce lumbar lordosis". It is also thought to facilitate axial imaging through the discs. Observations in seven subjects who underwent lumbar spine MRI with and without such hip flexion showed no appreciable change in the degree of lordosis. As the use of such devices does not produce a practical reduction of lumbar lordosis, the decision to employ them should be made entirely with re

5-HT2C receptor involvement in female rat lordosis behavior.

Adult, hormone-primed, ovariectomized rats (CDF-344) with bilateral implants within the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMN), were injected with 0.5 microgram estradiol benzoate followed 48 h later with 500 microgram progesterone. This priming produced rats with 2 different levels of sexual receptivity. Rats with a lordosis to mount ratio (L/M)>/=0.5 were used to examine the potential lordosis-inhibiting effects of the 5-HT2A receptor antagonist, R(+)-a-(2, 3-dimethoxyphenyl)-1-[2(4-fluoro-phenylethyl)]-4-piperidine-methanol (MDL 100,907), and the 5-HT2C receptor antagonist, 5-methyl

Fetal load and the evolution of lumbar lordosis in bipedal hominins.

As predicted by Darwin, bipedal posture and locomotion are key distinguishing features of the earliest known hominins. Hominin axial skeletons show many derived adaptations for bipedalism, including an elongated lumbar region, both in the number of vertebrae and their lengths, as well as a marked posterior concavity of wedged lumbar vertebrae, known as a lordosis. The lordosis stabilizes the upper body over the lower limbs in bipeds by positioning the trunk's centre of mass (COM) above the hips. However, bipedalism poses a unique challenge to pregnant females because the changing body shape an

Changes in lumbar lordosis modify the role of the extensor muscles.

STUDY DESIGN: Fiber angles of longissimus thoracis and iliocostalis lumborum at L3 were documented in vivo, using high resolution ultrasound, with the lumbar spine in neutral curve and when fully flexed. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of changes in lumbar curvature on the mechanics of these muscles. BACKGROUND: Full flexion modifies the failure tolerance of the lumbar spine, determines the load distribution among muscle and passive tissues, and modulates the types of tissue damage that occur. Related to this issue are the possible changes in muscle line of action with full flexion which

Peripheral anosmia and display of lordosis behaviour in the male rat.

The current study was designed to investigate the effects of peripheral anosmia on the display of lordosis behaviour in orchidectomized rats primed with oestradiol benzoate and progesterone. Peripheral anosmia was induced by intranasal Zn SO4 application in rats trained to locate a food pellet buried under shavings. The willingness to mate - proportion of animals displaying lordosis responses to mounts of a stimulus male - did not differ in the anosmic animals and in saline controls. In contrast the sexual performance - lordosis score - appeared to be significantly increased in anosmic animals

Loss of lumbar lordosis. A complication of spinal fusion for scoliosis.

Symptomatic loss of lumbar lordosis is a disabling complication of scoliosis surgery. This so-called "flat-back syndrome" is characterized by an inability to stand erect and by upper back pain. Distraction instrumentation extending into the lower lumbar spine or sacrum is the most frequently identified etiologic factor responsible for loss of lordosis. The more distal the level of instrumentation, the severer the loss of lumbar lordosis. Other factors that may aggravate the loss of lordosis include thoracolumbar kyphosis, fixed thoracic kyphosis, hip flexion contractures, and pseudoarthrosis.

Dihydrotestosterone stimulates mounting behavior but not lordosis in female rats.

The ability of androgens to stimulate masculine sexual behavior is thought to depend on the aromatization of such androgens to estrogens. In this scheme, reduced androgens such as dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which cannot be aromatized, are thought to exert major peripheral but little or no central nervous system influences on the display of masculine sexual behavior. Further, an early report that DHT can induce lordosis, an estrogen (E) dependent behavior, led to a notion that DHT may effect behavior through metabolic intermediates such as 5 alpha-androstane-3 beta, 17 beta-diol (ADIOL) which th

Effects of acute ovariectomy on the lordosis response of female rats.

The sexual receptivity of intact females with 4- or 5-day estrous cycles was compared to that of other females which had been ovariectomized at particular times during their cycles. The quality and frequency of lordosis responding were more degraded the earlier during the cycle ovariectomy was performed. This effect was more pronounced in 4-day than in 5-day cyclic females. Because exogenous progesterone was administered to all ovariectomized females, these behavioral deficits were attributed to removal of ovarian estradiol. Ovariectomy 6 hr before the critical period for luteinizing hormone r

Age-of-cessation of lumbar lordosis development as an assessment parameter.

BACKGROUND: In managing paediatric spinal deformities, the currently-in-use growth maturity assessment parameters (clinical or radiological) are based mostly on Caucasian populations. They may be adequate for general treatment planning but may not accurately predict the remaining growth potential. Some therapies (e.g. growing rod distractions or growth modulation surgeries) require more accurate predictions of remaining growth potential and race-specific values. Lumbar lordosis (LL) development ceases at spinal bone maturity. The age-of-cessation seems a more accurate predictor of remaining sp

The Effect of Patient Position on Psoas Morphology and in Lumbar Lordosis.

INTRODUCTION: Among the interbody fusions, lateral lumbar interbody fusion allows access to the lumbar spine through the major psoas muscle, which offers several advantages to the spine surgeon. However, some of its drawbacks cause surgeons to avoid using it as a daily practice. Therefore, to address some of these challenges, we propose the prone transpsoas technique, differing mainly from the traditional technique on patient position-moving from lateral to prone decubitus, theoretically enhancing the lordosis and impacting the psoas morphology. METHODS: Twenty-four consecutive patients were

Limited correction of lumbar lordosis in the treatment of degenerative scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Patients suffering from degenerative scoliosis (DS) were commonly associated with coronal and sagittal imbalance which made deformity correction surgery necessary. The study aimed to explore the efficacy and feasibility of the limited correction of lumbar lordosis (LL) in the treatment of patients with DS. METHODS: This was a retrospective study including 58 DS patients who underwent spinal deformity correction surgery and were followed up at least 2 years between January 2013 and January 2017. According to the difference of postoperative LL, the patients were divided into 2 group
