A competing risk analysis of predictors of time to lost to follow-up among adults with TB/HIV coinfection in Bahir Dar.

Lost to follow-up (LTFU), defined as interrupting anti-TB treatment for ≥ 8 consecutive weeks or missing anti-retroviral therapy (ART) appointments for > 90 days, is a barrier to TB/HIV coinfection management. Poor treatment adherence, a driver of multidrug resistance in TB/HIV, poses critical challenges to case management. Overestimating effect sizes when considering mutually exclusive events, like LTFU from ART and anti-TB treatment, can occur if sources of error are not properly accounted for in competing events. However, studies estimating the effect sizes of predictors of time to LTFU usi

Lost in Transition: Long-term Follow-up in Traumatic Brain Injury Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant public health problem with patients frequently suffering long-term neurologic, psychiatric, and cognitive symptoms. Systematic outpatient follow-up after hospital discharge is critical for identifying residual deficits and improving functional outcomes. We hypothesize that the majority of TBI patients do not engage in routine outpatient follow-up after their index admission and may not receive ancillary services necessary for long-term recovery. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, single-center analysis of all admitted TBI patient

Determinants of the lost to follow-up status among patients with tuberculosis who emigrated to the Republic of Korea: a mixed-method study.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health concern, with foreign migrants in the Republic of Korea (ROK) representing a particularly vulnerable group; despite comprising only 3.5% of the population, they account for over 5% of annual TB cases and exhibit disproportionately high rates of lost to follow up (LTFU) from treatment compared to native Koreans. This mixed-methods study aimed to identify key factors influencing non-adherence to treatment and LTFU among migrants. METHODS: Utilizing national TB surveillance data from 2016 to 2018 for 4,011 migrant and 64,620 nat

Interventions to reengage people living with HIV who are lost to follow-up from HIV treatment programs: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Optimizing services to facilitate engagement and retention in care of people living with HIV (PLWH) on antiretroviral therapies (ARTs) is critical to decrease HIV-related morbidity and mortality and HIV transmission. We systematically reviewed the literature for the effectiveness of implementation strategies to reestablish and subsequently retain clinical contact, improve viral load suppression, and reduce mortality among patients who had been lost to follow-up (LTFU) from HIV services. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We searched 7 databases (PubMed, Cochrane, ERIC, PsycINFO, EMBASE, Web of

Implementation of a re-linkage to care strategy in patients with chronic hepatitis C who were lost to follow-up in Latin America.

To achieve WHO's goal of eliminating hepatitis C virus (HCV), innovative strategies must be designed to diagnose and treat more patients. Therefore, we aimed to describe an implementation strategy to identify patients with HCV who were lost to follow-up (LTFU) and offer them re-linkage to HCV care. We conducted an implementation study utilizing a strategy to contact patients with HCV who were not under regular follow-up in 13 countries from Latin America. Patients with HCV were identified by the international classification of diseases (ICD-9/10) or equivalent. Medical records were then review

Using concept mapping to explore why patients become lost to follow up from an antiretroviral therapy program in the Zomba District of Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Retention in antiretroviral therapy (ART) programmes remains a challenge in many settings including Malawi, in part due to high numbers of losses to follow-up. Concept Mapping (CM), a mix-method participatory approach, was used to explore why patients on ART are lost to follow-up (LTFU) by identifying: 1) factors that influence patient losses to follow-up and 2) barriers to effective and efficient tracing in Zomba, Malawi. METHODS: CM sessions (brainstorming, sorting and rating, interpretation) were conducted in urban and rural settings in Zomba, Malawi. Participants included ART

The association between lost to follow-up and patient reported outcomes two years following total knee replacement, a single center study.

BackgroundTotal knee arthroplasty (TKA) is among the most frequently performed orthopedic procedures worldwide. Postoperative outcomes are commonly assessed through routine clinical follow-up; however, a substantial proportion of patients do not adhere to scheduled visits and are classified as lost to follow-up (LFU). Data regarding patient-reported outcomes in this population remain limited and conflicting.MethodsThis retrospective, single-center cohort study included patients aged ≥50 years who underwent primary TKA between January 2018 and March 2020, allowing for a minimum follow-up of 2 y

Prevalence of lost to follow-up in drug-sensitive TB patients in WHO SEAR countries: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major global public health concern, particularly in the South-East Asia Region (SEAR), which accounts for 43% of worldwide TB cases. Loss to follow-up (LTFU) during treatment poses a significant obstacle to tuberculosis management, leading to treatment failure and the emergence of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DRTB). METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO ID: CRD42024557140) sought to evaluate the prevalence of loss to follow-up (LTFU) and the associated factors among Drug-Sensitive Tuberculosis (DSTB) patients in Southeast Asian Region (

Forty-three-Year Follow-up of Salvage Knee Reconstruction Using the Patella to Replace Lost Tibial Articular Surface: A Case Report.

CASE: A 19-year-old soldier presented with sudden onset of left knee pain and giving-way while running. Evaluation showed a pathologic fracture through a radiolucent lesion of the tibial metaphysis. Excision of a giant cell tumor of bone entailed removal of much of the lateral tibial articular surface. The joint surface was replaced by transposition of the patella, which was transfixed in position with an ASIF (Association for the Study of Internal Fixation) condylar blade plate. This technique resulted in satisfactory knee function that has persisted for 43 years. CONCLUSION: When excision o

Predictors and impact of patients lost to follow-up in a long-term randomized trial of immediate versus deferred antiretroviral treatment.

We studied predictors for losses to follow-up and the impact of such losses in the AIDS Clinical Trials Group 019 protocol, a long-term randomized trial of immediate versus deferred antiretroviral therapy in asymptomatic HIV-1-infected patients with >500 CD4 cells/mm3. The trial was selected because of its key importance in determining guidelines for antiretroviral therapy, and because it had the longest follow-up among all antiretroviral trials and the largest percentage of patients whose vital status was unknown at study end. Younger age, a history of parenteral drug use, and nonwhite race w

Long-term follow-up in patients with lost coronary stents during interventional procedures.

The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the incidence of stent loss during interventional procedures and to identify the associated immediate and long-term consequences of such loss. We evaluated 36 cases in which the stents were prematurely displaced from the stent delivery device. Five stents were completely removed from the vascular system successfully. Five stents could not be retrieved from the coronary circulation and led to significant adverse events in 3 patients, in whom the lost stents were not excluded by the placement of another stent. In 26 patients, peripheral emboli

Orthodontic Replacement of Lost Permanent Molar with Neighbor Molar: A Six-Year Follow-Up.

Extraction is very frequent indication in orthodontic planning, especially when there are crowding, biprotrusion, and aesthetically unpleasant profiles. Next to extraction comes space closure, which represents a challenge for orthodontists because of extended treatment time, discomfort created for the patient, tissue tolerance, and stability concerns. When it comes to what mechanics to choose for space closure, loops present two major advantages in relation to sliding mechanics: absence of abrasion and possibility to reach pure dental translation. A case is presented where an adult female pati

Predictors of lost to follow-up in a "test and treat" programme among adult women with high-risk sexual behavior in Kampala, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Immediate uptake of antiretroviral therapy (ART) after an HIV-positive diagnosis (Test and Treat) is now being implemented in Uganda. Data are limited on lost to follow-up (LTFU) in high-risk cohorts that have initiated 'Test and Treat'. We describe LTFU in a cohort of women of high-risk sexual behaviour who initiated ART under "Test and Treat". METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of participant records at the Good Health for Women Project (GHWP) clinic, a clinic in Kampala for women at high-risk of HIV-infection. We included HIV positive women ≥18 years who initiat
