PURPOSE: Curative treatment for rectal cancer includes removal of part or all of the rectum. As a result, patients may experience Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS), characterized by bowel dysfunction that negatively affects quality of life. Nurses assist patients in the self-management of LARS, yet there is a need to develop more self-care modalities. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the experience using the Paula method of exercise in patients with LARS.
METHODS: A qualitative study of semi-structured interviews of 17 patients who completed a 12-week exercise intervention as part

The aim of this systematic review is to summarise the available evidence for radiological changes associated with postoperative low anterior resection syndrome (LARS). A literature search was undertaken for all studies focusing on preoperative radiological predictors of postoperative LARS. Articles were selected from MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases up to October 2024. Eighty-four articles were screened: eighty-one were excluded and three were included in the analysis. All included studies focused on preoperative Magnetic Resonance Imag

PURPOSE: Transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) is a surgical alternative to transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM), transanal excision and proctectomy in the management of benign rectal polyps and early rectal cancers. Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) describes the constellation of symptoms which result from and are common after distal colorectal resection. Symptoms include incontinence, frequency, urgency and evacuatory dysfunction. The aim of the current study was to prospectively evaluate pre- and post-operative LARS in patients who undergo TAMIS.
METHODS: We conducted a pros

Background: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is a frequent functional complication after sphincter-preserving rectal cancer surgery. Although tumor location and treatment-related factors are established determinants, the contribution of pelvic skeletal anatomy assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) pelvimetry remains uncertain. This study evaluated whether three conventional MRI-derived skeletal pelvimetry measurements provide incremental predictive information for major LARS beyond a parsimonious preoperative clinical reference model. Methods: This single-center observational coho

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Total mesorectal excision (TME) for rectal cancer (RC) often results in significant bowel symptoms, commonly known as low anterior resection syndrome (LARS). Although pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) is recommended in noncancer populations for treating bowel symptoms, this has been scarcely investigated in RC patients. The objective was to investigate PFMT effectiveness on LARS in patients after TME for RC.
METHODS: A multicenter, single-blind prospective randomized controlled trial comparing PFMT (intervention; n=50) versus no PFMT (control; n=54) 1 month followi

PURPOSE: Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS) is a common and debilitating outcome of sphincter-preserving surgery for colorectal cancer, severely affecting quality of life. While pelvic floor rehabilitation (PFR) is recommended as a conservative treatment, access to structured care is limited. This study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a structured, physiotherapist-led PFR programme in an Australian outpatient setting, and explored the within-person changes in bowel function and quality of life.
METHODS: A non-randomised, single-arm prospective study was conducted at Concord

PURPOSE: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is a prevalent and often persistent consequence of sphincter-preserving rectal cancer surgery that substantially disrupts daily functioning and long-term adaptation. Beyond bowel dysfunction, patients frequently experience psychosocial distress and lifestyle limitations that require comprehensive supportive care. This study aimed to explore how patients live with LARS, the challenges they encounter, and the self-management strategies they develop, in order to identify priorities for supportive care across the survivorship trajectory.

Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is a frequent complication after sphincterpreserving surgery for rectal cancer, often exacerbated by neoadjuvant radiotherapy. While radiotherapy is a recognized risk factor, the specific contribution of dose to anorectal substructures remains unclear. This retrospective study evaluated whether dosimetric parameters of key anorectal components are associated with postoperative dysfunction. We analyzed 25 patients treated with long-course neoadjuvant radiotherapy followed by surgery, with available dose-volume histogram data and LARS assessment performed a

Background After anterior resection (AR), one of the most debilitating complications is low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) seen in about 64% of patients. The severity of the LARS score was significantly correlated with neoadjuvant treatment, the extent of rectal surgery, complication by the anastomotic leak, female gender, and age < 64 years. In this study, we analyzed the impact of various clinical factors on LARS and also the various domains of quality of life (QoL). Purpose To assess the incidence of LARS in patients undergoing sphincter-sparing surgery for rectal cancer after the patie

Background: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is a bowel dysfunction following sphincter-sparing proctectomy. The occurrence of LARS may affect a patient's overall quality of life (QoL) after surgery. Current research was aimed to investigate related factors of LARS and major LARS in total mesorectal excision (TME) and its relationship with QoL. Methods: This study included patients who underwent TME at authors' institutes. LARS was evaluated with an LARS score. QoL was identified using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ-C30 questionnaire, version 3.0. Appr

AIM: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) has a large impact on patients' quality of life. Several heterogeneous intervention pathways are suggested in the literature. The steps and timing of the different steps in the pathways are unclear. This systematic scoping review aims to map the range of intervention pathways for LARS after sphincter-saving rectal cancer surgery.
METHODS: A search was undertaken on four databases (CINAHL, EMBASE, PubMed, and Web of Science). Any type of paper describing intervention pathways for patients with LARS following sphincter-saving surgery was included. Exc

AIM: Bowel dysfunction following sphincter-preserving rectal resection for cancer, commonly referred to as low anterior resection syndrome (LARS), significantly impacts patients' quality of life. Preventing this condition is essential for healthcare teams. Postoperative pelvic floor rehabilitation, including anal biofeedback therapy, has shown potential in alleviating established LARS symptoms. This trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of pelvic floor rehabilitation prior to bowel continuity restoration in preventing LARS in patients undergoing sphincter-preserving rectal resection for can

PURPOSE: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) causes devastating symptoms and impairs the quality of life (QOL). This study investigated the incidence and risk factors of LARS and their association with the QOL in patients with lower rectal tumors.
METHODS: Patients who underwent anus-preserving surgery for lower rectal tumors between 2014 and 2019 and who had anal defecation between 2020 and 2021 were surveyed. The LARS score measured severity, and the QOL was evaluated using the Japanese version of the Fecal Incontinence Quality-of-Life Scale (JFIQL). The primary endpoint was the incidenc
