Docosahexaenoic Acid and Eicosapentaenoic Acid Inhibit the Contractile Responses of the Guinea Pig Lower Gastrointestinal Tract.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), and are abundant in fish oil. These n-3 PUFAs have been reported to improve the lower gastrointestinal (LGI) disorders such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease through their anti-inflammatory effects. However, there are few studies on the effect of n-3 PUFAs on motility of the LGI tract, such as the ileum and colon, the parts frequently affected by these inflammatory disorders. To elucidate the effects of DHA and EPA on the LGI tract motility, we performed comparative evaluation of the

Prophylaxis Versus Treatment Use of Laxative for Paralysis of Lower Gastrointestinal Tract in Critically Ill Patients.

GOALS: To evaluate the prevalence of lower gastrointestinal tract paralysis and to compare the success to achieve defecation between treatment and prophylaxis strategies. BACKGROUND: Laxatives use is commonly the first-level measure to achieve defecation in critically ill patients with lower gastrointestinal tract paralysis. Studies comparing prophylaxis versus treatment of lower gastrointestinal tract paralysis have not been performed yet. STUDY: We designed 3 sequential phases of 4 months each: observational phase, treatment phase, and prophylaxis phase. First-level measure was intermitten

Lower gastrointestinal tract bleeding caused by dieulafoy-like lesion synchronous meckel diverticulum: A rare case report.

Meckel diverticulum is an embryonic remnant of the Gastrointestinal duct which causes symptoms < 5% in the 2% population. Painless bleeding and abdominal pain are the most often reported symptoms. Dieulafoy lesion/dieulafoy-like lesion often cause upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract bleeding, but massive lower gastrointestinal bleeding is rare. We reported a 19-year-old male presented massive lower GI tract bleeding caused by Meckel diverticulum synchronous dieulafoy-like lesion.

Prevalence of upper and lower gastrointestinal tract findings in liver transplant candidates undergoing screening endoscopic evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of esophageal and gastric varices and portal hypertensive gastropathy (PHG) has been well studied in cirrhotic patients. Because little is known of the prevalence of other upper and lower gastrointestinal tract pathology in pre-liver transplant candidates, we retrospectively studied the prevalence of and factors associated with these findings. METHODS: One hundred and twenty pre-liver transplant candidates underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy to evaluate for varices, and 71 of them also underwent flexible sigmoidoscopy to screen for colorectal carcinoma. The associati

Epidemiology and risk factors for angiodysplasias of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract: A large population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal angiodysplasia (GIAD) is a rare diagnosis among the general population. We aimed to identify risk factors for GIADs and to determine the frequency rate in the general population. METHODS: A population-based retrospective study was performed including patients diagnosed with upper (stomach/duodenum) or lower (small bowel/colon) GIADs based on diagnostic codes from a large health maintenance organization. Control groups were matched for age and gender. Additional data including demographics, comorbidities, malignancies, and medications were collected. RESULTS: 991

Strain-level translocation and enrichment dynamics of oral bacteria in the lower gastrointestinal tract of stunted children.

Emerging evidence suggests that ectopic colonization of oral bacteria in the lower digestive tract may exacerbate gastrointestinal disorders. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether bacteria of oral origin are continuously translocating from the oral cavity to the lower gastrointestinal tract or are locally adapted and persist in their respective niches. We investigated strain translocation dynamics in 44 healthy and stunted children from Bangui, Central African Republic. Using cross-sectional shotgun metagenomic sequencing of saliva, gastric, duodenal, and fecal samples, and isolation and wh

Development of a porcine model for assessment of mucosal repair following endoscopic resection of the lower gastrointestinal tract.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is widely performed for the treatment of colorectal polyps. However, the pathophysiological mechanisms of mucosal repair, including in situations at high risk of post-polypectomy bleeding, remain largely unknown. The objective of our study was to develop a porcine model of EMR in the lower gastrointestinal tract to monitor mucosal wound healing over time. METHODS: Under general anesthesia, five large wounds were created in the lower gastrointestinal tract at different times, i. e. at day 0, 3, 7, 10, and 14, by multiband EMR, in each of

Dysfunction of the lower urinary and distal gastrointestinal tracts in pediatric patients with known spinal cord problems.

Destruction of the urinary tract in children with elimination, storage, and holding dysfunction of the lower urinary and the distal GI tracts is caused primarily by high intravesical pressure. UTI accelerates this process. The LPP and the status of the urethral control mechanism and its relationship to the detrusor are the primary determinants of intravesical pressure. Intravesical pressures of more than 40 cm H2O are dangerous because they cause a pressure gradient that is transmitted proximally to the renal papillae, which results in the cessation of renal blood flow and a loss of renal func

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration of pelvic lesions via the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract approaches.

BACKGROUND: Combining upper and lower gastrointestinal tract (GI) approaches allows expansion of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) indications for pelvic lesions. The upper GI approach has been used for pelvic lesions around the level of the aortoiliac bifurcation in our institution. The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and safety of EUS-FNA for pelvic lesions via the upper and lower GI approaches. METHODS: All consecutive patients who underwent EUS-FNA for the pelvic lesion between January 2008 and December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Pelvi

Peritoneal metastases of lower gastrointestinal tract origin:a comparative study of patient outcomes following cytoreduction and intraperitoneal chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery (CS) combined with intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPC) is a multimodal approach to the treatment of peritoneal metastases (PM) of lower gastrointestinal origin. This study examines patient outcomes and critically evaluates its patterns of recurrences relative to the site of metastatic origin. METHODS: Patients treated with CS/IPC from 2000 to 2012 where PM arose from a primary tumour of the appendix, colon and rectum were identified from a prospective database for retrospective evaluation. The primary endpoints were survival (overall and disease-free), and sec

Small bowel ischemia after angiographic embolization for angiodysplasia of lower gastrointestinal tract: the case for conservative management.

However, transarterial embolization for angiodysplasia has become widely used, the possibility of complications such as bowel ischemia and infarction still exists. We experienced a 60-year-old woman of small bowel ischemia after angiographic embolization for the angiodysplasia of cecum treated with conservative management. We should consider the possibility of recovery via the rich intramural vascular networks of the lower GI tract before deciding to operate.

A histochemical method of differentiating lower gastrointestinal tract mucin from other mucins in primary or metastatic tumours.

Epithelial mucins of the normal terminal ileum, caecum, colon, and rectum of man are unique in that they alone exhibit staining following the periodate-borohydride/KOH/PAS technique. Application of this technique enables one to differentiate those mucin-producting metastases arising from adenocarcinoma of the lower gastrointestinal tract from those arising elsewhere, and may occasionally be useful in determining the site of the primary tumour when it is in doubt. Furthermore, it was found to be especially useful in distinguishing between primary adenocarcinoma of the lung and metastases in the

Comparative genomics and phenotypic studies to determine site-specificity of Escherichia coli in the lower gastrointestinal tract of humans.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is an important commensal in the human gut; however, it is unknown whether strains show site-specificity in the lower gut. To investigate this, we assessed genotypic and phenotypic differences in 37 clone pairs (two strains with very similar multiple locus variable-number-tandem-repeat analysis [MLVA] profiles) of E. coli isolated from mucosal biopsies of two different gut locations (terminal ileum and rectum). The clone pairs varied at the genomic level; single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were common, multiple nucleotide polymorphisms (MNPs) were observed but le

Tocilizumab for the treatment of severe steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease of the lower gastrointestinal tract.

Steroid-refractory (SR) acute gastrointestinal (GI) graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is associated with significant mortality in allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation recipients. We retrospectively evaluated the efficacy of tocilizumab for the treatment of SR biopsy-proven acute lower GI GVHD in 16 consecutive adult transplant recipients between October 2015 and July 2016. Tocilizumab 8 mg/kg was administered every 2 weeks until achievement of complete response, defined as resolution of all manifestations of GI GVHD, or until patients had progression or initiation of other therapy. Acute graft-versus-host disease is more prevalent and severe in the lower than the upper gastrointestinal tract.

It is unclear whether acute gastrointestinal (GI) graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) affects all segments of the GI tract equally. Up to 45% patients reported showed discrepancy in involvement between upper GI (UGI) and lower GI (LGI) tract. We compared the prevalence and the severity of acute GVHD in UGI and LGI tract on histologic examination. A cohort of 110 cases of simultaneous UGI and LGI biopsies from 105 allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation recipients with clinically confirmed GI GVHD were reviewed retrospectively. The χ(2) test and 1-way analysis of variance test were used
